Question about 'How do I get back into Windows XP'

My Win XP operated machine has suddenly developed a problem - It starts to boot up,
then just after the login screen it says that the system has been stopped "To prevent
damage to the system". If I try and boot up from the Win XP disk and use the R (repair)
option, it asks for an administrator password. I'm sure I have put the correct password
in (and I've tried a few variations) but it keeps saying "invalid".
Do you have any suggestions for getting round this problem? I would have like to
boot up into "dos" but, unlike Win 98, I can't get a dos window to run CHKDSK (In
case of some HDD fault).
Any assistance would be very gratefully received.
Ian
