Question about 'How do I reset...' : Playing AVI video files

I have a question about How
do I reset the Windows Media Player video cache?:
I have Windows Media Player 8.00.. with Windows XP.
I've downloaded a couple of AVI video files, and have problems playing them.
When I play one, it says 'format not supported', though the file is complete, according
to the file size.
When I play another, it plays only sound, and does not play the video. (It's a video
file.) I've checked for Windows updates, and get the message that I have the latest
version of Windows Media Player.
Could you help me out here?
Thanks!
