This article leaves off an important issue for Windows XP/2000/NT about determining which applications are run at boot time.

In addition to the Registry "run" family of keys, the startup folder, and the .ini files,

Windows XP/2000/NT will also launch any services whose startup type is automatic during the boot/init process.

Services used to primarily be "heavy guns" like SQL server, IIS, etc. but more applications seem to be coming as services. (For example, my McAfee AVSync Manager Virus protection runs as a service.)

Services are enabled/disabled in from the Control Panel/Administrative tools/Services interface or through MSConfig.

The best place to view what runs at boot for XP is to run msconfig it shows all areas that can launch an app at boot.
