Question about 'How do get the taskbar and desktop back if Explorer crashes'

I've tried several of the methods suggested in this forum, but my Taskbar is still
invisible on boot-up, and I have no desktop icons. Ctrl-Alt-Del launches the Task
Manager, and most apps seem to run correctly, but Windows Explorer won't launch.
I'm on a laptop, and scanreg doesn't appear to be installed on it. Using F8 to launch
the last known good configuration doesn't help, because Windows thinks everything
is hunky-dory. This condition started just after I received a message on boot-up
saying the Registry had been damaged. I've contacted the manufacturer of the laptop,
but who knows whether they'll answer? Any suggestions would be much appreciated!
