This is what works for me (I do this all the time) & it's easy: In the _Run_ command type "msconfig". This will show what programs Windows currently starts when the computer is starting. There is a list with boxes checked. Simply uncheck the ones you don't want to run at start up. I usually uncheck as many as I can, and then restart the computer. If it doesn't act right, I turn programs back on until it does act right. Any icons that automatically show up on the task bar can slow the system down. When installing new programs, often there is a promt that wants to 'run at start up' or some similar phrase. In the future just uncheck the box or choose NO.
