A little description about your computer would be helpful. Defragging was a waste of time. Since you were formatting anyway, that removes everything. If your system is relatively old, you could have a hard drive translation software that was put on it to overcome a size limit. If so, XP gets very distressed about such software. It can be fixed, but we need more info before giving you unnecessary information.
