Same if I go with dosprompt.. H: and ask for dir: access denied... ho..ho..?? 0 byte availlable.. BUT.. if I go on by control panel.... disk manager ..disk drive.....property of my Maxtor.. and on Volume and press there all there.. choice a partition, property.. I can un-commpress them.. and it start to uncompress.. seem to work.. but after reboot.. ?6 nothing change,, Where could be the problem..? Thanks in advance,, Denis Sergent@hotmail.com

I'm having the same problem, I installed XP on a new drive I bought and now my old C:\Documents and Settings\staylor\ gives me a 'Access Denied' Error.. That folder holds valuable data and I'm hoping there is a fix for this?

hmyea, same prob here, i think this is because the older filesystem is encrypted for that user only...

finally i seem to have found someone with the same problem! i removed windows2000 and installed xp. now i can not access one of the older partitions. i get access denied. that old partition had permissions only for the administrator. i think this is the root of problem because my other partitions which had default permissions can be accessed. does someone have a solution??

The folders or files or even an entire partition could be restricted in the previous instalation by any user, so now those restrictions keep in there for even the administrator. I've had that problem three days ago, I couldn't modify those restrictions to various folders. Well, Win XP installs itself with the "Use simple file sharing" option in the explorer-->tools-->folder options-->view, menu. Just deselect it, and modify the properties of any folder, archive or partition you could not access: 1- right-click the object and select properties 2- go to the security menu and then click the "Advanced" button. 3- Make sure your user account stay in the "Owner" menu. Then click "Ok" and again "Ok". 4- Repeat Step 1 5- Go again to de "Security" menu and add your user account name in the "Group or User names" field, and select "Full control" on the field below. 6- Press "Ok" and that's all.

Hi I just read your answer from June about the access denied issue. I found this solution before but I could not use it because I can't find the "Use simple file sharing" option. I looked in the explorer-->tools-->folder options-->view and found other options but not that one. (I am running an XP home os). If you can help or anyone else I would truly be greatful! Thanks, Noah PS the addreess is yahoo not zahoo

help! I've got XP home (I know, I know) and had the same re-install problem. Unfortunately, the fix doesn't work, because there is no "Use simple sharing blah" box to uncheck. I get that crappy "Access Denied" thing, when I try to grab my old profile (and files) from my old (alternate) drive. Any ideas out there? Thanks! Jessica cyandimexelle@hotmail.com

I figured it out! Just boot your computer, and press F8 to chose from boot options. Select the harddrive or whatever windows is on, and before you select the OS, press F8 again, to choose the mode you want to use. Choose Safe Mode and go into windows as Administrator (password is just 'enter' if you haven't yet set it). Once you are in, you can go to the Documents and Settings area, and play around with the ownership and access to the files. Make sure you select the box that applies the new properties to all sub files and folders of that profile directory.... just play around with stuff, and do this until you can get in. Make sure you add access for the profile (account) that you usually login with - don't leave it as adminstrator only, or you'll have to go into safe mode any time you want to access the files. jessica

recover XP on an other machine

I had a vaio with XP. It broke... I have now a new laptop with my old drive. When I boot up, I have a blue screen... So I would like to make a re-install from the XP CD. I tried , but it doesn't want to offer me the RECOVER option. (the one after install) So it will erase my setups! Do you know a way to overcome this, and force this "R" option. thanks Dom
