Does xp slow my pc down?

I just installed XP. Now, when I scroll a page on the internet, it just goes frame by frame. Like it really has problems handling the web page. What is going on? I adjusted the settings to minimal, but it doesn't get any better. It's annoying to surf like this. I had no problems like this running on Win98... I have a Pentium III 500 Mhz processor and 256 MB RAM. Isn't that enough for xp?

I was told by a Microsoft Certified guy that XP will use as much ram as it can get. When asked what that meant, he told me i could upgrade from my 256 to 512 and that would be a good idea. Whether he was trying sell me a chunk of memory or if it is true, at the current price of memory, i did it..

Just a guess... If you are scrolling with a wheel mouse, look at the following setting and ensure it is not checked: Start > Control Panel > Printers and Other Hardware > Mouse > Wheel > One screen at a time.

I'm running XP on a 450 PII and have no noticable slowdown at all. I do have 386 megs of ram. I notice no internet slowdown at all.

Hi,

On the beginning, I had the same proble as you, and I solved it changing the screen resolution. by default it was set to the highest color resolution on the screen resolution, I use the 16bit colors 1024*768 pixels wich is good enough even to see the high resolution pictures!

XP shouldn't slow down your system at all, if anything, it should run smoother. But really, I'm suprised so many people are running out to buy XP. I'm waiting for XP SE. Doesn't XP use NTFS, or was that Deus Ex.....?
