Further to How
do I make the background of desktop icon text transparent?: ,
none of the utilities mentioned for other versions of Windows ("transparent" etc)
wil
work on XP, but WindowFX wil. It does a lot of other funky things I'm
not interested in, but it will make desktop icon text transparent.
You can get it from

HERE IS THE ANSWER:
Right-click on the desktop,
choose "Arrange Icons by",
go to "Lock Web Items on Desktop",
un-check that.

Icon Text not Transparent on Desktop:
When the text under the icons on your desktop are not transparent, there are two
things to check. First open System from the Control Panel, select the Advanced tab,
and press the Settings button under the Performance header. Make sure that on the
Visual Effects tab, the option Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop is
selected.
If this still doesn't do the trick, right-click the desktop, point to Arrange Icons
By and make sure that Lock Web Items on Desktop is un-checked.

Also, under Display Properties -> Desktop -> Web, if you have any web pages or html
documents that are checked in the web pages window, then the transparency effects
will not work. In other words, enabling active desktop disables the transparency
effect. The official MS link (for XP):

desktop -> web

I noticed in reading through this thread (and I have not read every post so I hope
Im not being redundant) that no one had touched on another annoyance that I have
stumbled across. It seems as though when Active Desktop is enabled, you lose some
of your feature sets, such as the transperancy of icon backgrounds. I noticed as
I toggled AD on/off, the background for icons also toggles on/off. Annoying to say
the least, especially when you are trying all the other solutions posted and none
of them work :o)

background to have transparency? It used to work. Also, how do I turn off Active

reply to 'How do I make the background of desktop icon text transparent?' I've done
this on many computers and it worked all the time.
Step 1.
Go to the Control Panel
Click onto display
Click onto desktop tab
Then Customize desktop
Click on the web tb here
And untick all items in the web pages part.
Step 2
Go to control panel
Click on system
Click on the Advanced Tab
In the performance box
Click settings
In the Visual Effects tab
Make sure the box is Ticked for Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop
Then Apply that click ok
Then close that off.
Yours shadows should now be gone.
Also
Right click anywhere on desktop
Go to arrange icons by
And make sure Lock Web Items On Desktop IS NOT TICKED
Then Your Done.
Hope it works for you as it has for me.

The problem (Windows XP SP2) is with the active desktop. To regain transparency,
simply: right click on your desktop, select properties, Desktop, Customize Desktop,
Web, and uncheck ANY items listed under the Web Pages dialogue box. Apply changes
and Wola!

Thank you so much for going through that step by step. I'd been trying for two days
to figure out why the color bars behind the icon text was no longer transparent.
After attempting all other suggestions and not having them work, I saw this suggestion
about unchecking the web options and it was the answer. Thank you!

Do this:
START->Run
there write:
REGEDIT
now by clicking on the left side go to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\
Now on the rigth side double-click on:
"NoActiveDesktop"
now on the text box change the value to:
"1"
and press OK
Then double click on
"ForceActiveDesktopOn"
change the textbox value to:
"0"
and press OK
That was what was missing...but dont forget to:
1 -] Checked on "Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop" (System->Advanced
Tab->Performance box->Settings->Visual Effects tab)
2 -] Unchecked "Lock Web Items On Desktop" (Right click on desktop->Arrange icons
by)
3 -] Unchecked all Web Items (Control Panel->Display->Desktop tab->Customize Desktop->Web
tab)
NOW ITS DONE. Hope it helped

Another solution is to make your desktop background a solid color. Then go to Display
Properties, Appearance, Advanced & select Desktop. Change Color 1 to the same color
as your desktop.

By doing this you can only use one type of image.. i cant recal if it is BMP or JPG.
Just open your image with Paint then File->Save As... and save it as one of that
extensions.. One of it should do it.

When you see the option for drop shadows, uncheck it, apply, and then reenable it.

Need Transparency with active desktop TURNED ON

All our wallpapers are deployed via the domain controler through group policy. so
we have been trying to find a way to enable transparency with active desktop TURNED
ON.
I have seen other systems work with trasparency and have active desktop enabled i
just can't see why it won't work on ours.

did anyone notice that after fixing with the "regedit" fix that when u right click
the desktop and go to "arrange icons by" the options for "show desktop" and "lock
desktop icons" are no longer there? does anyone know how to fix this? its not a big
deal and its not sumthin i really use but the fact its not there anymore just bugs
me. i've tried messing with the registry and changing the ones and twos around for
the entries listed in the fix, but nothing worked. every other way except in the
fix brought back the options but also the colored boxes under the icons.

Thank you! I knew it was so simple, and that I have done it before you were the first
guy I found on the internet that knew what he was talking about.
Thanx,

Though I seem to be "Johnny come lately", I must thank the forum and this thread
in solving this annoyance.
To reiterate for the later joiners (and Murali if he comes back) 2 things must be
done:
1.Rightclick on Desktop, click "Arrange Icons By" and then uncheck (remove the tick
mark) "Lock Web Items on Desktop"
2.Control Panel -> System -> Advanced Tab -> "Performance", click "Settings" button
and then go to "Use drop shadows for icon captions" and check it (fill the box with
cross mark.
3.I think Administrator type account is a must. (if you can install programs etc,
you are admin.
Considering such a simple and elegant solution, I wonder why there are so many "Utilities"
for doing this (some of which claim to change your system files). Even more strange
is people paying good money for these utilities.
I was fortunate in happening on this forum before downloading one of the utilities.

Your step-by-step explanation is good. However, these items are not available on
my computer. In Control Panel, I find "Systems Management" and nothing that you've
mentioned beyond that. Is this Service Pack 2?

VERY IMPORTANT: you need to be logged in using an administrator account to make these
changes.
1. Dbl click "System" in control Panel to get the "System Properties" box.
2. Click the "Advanced" tab in this box.
3. In this tab, in the "Performance" section, click "Settings" button. This will
produce another box named "Performance Options". This has 3 tabs.
4. Select the "Visual Effects" tab. (it is usually preselcted)
5. This tab has a white box in lower half containg a list with tiny square boxes
in front.
6. Scroll down this list and "Check" (click on the tiny box till a tick mark appears
within the square box.
That's it.

Thank you. Although the folders and tabs weren't quite the same, I did manage to
find the tiny little boxes. My Desktop looks much nicer now.

Dear baddog5454,
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!
I've been burdened with this problem for about two weeks now, tried for several days
and hours to eradicate it, and tried all the Internet suggestions (except ordering
the recommended utility programs), and fiinally found your suggestion, which fixed
it ... just like that!
With much appreciation,
David
