I'm testing windows XP, but after install some software, the CD-ROM driver or the
registry seems to be corrupt. Any ideas about how to resolve this without reinstall
XP? Have in mind that under XP I don't have CD access.
My CD-ROM is a Phillips PCRW804, but this seems to afect any cd-rom

One other thing to consider. Did you install any new burn software. (Adaptec in
particular). I did this and my drivers are also locked. If this is your problem
Adaptec is comming out with a patch for actual XP compatability.

Yes, I installed Nero 5.5.1. Also I installed MusicMatch Jukebox, but I don't know
what has happened. The Cd-rom is still missing...

No, I don't have an Internet connection in this computer. Nor I have a floppy, so
how can I get an update?

This is a problem with Nero 5.5.5.1. The same thing happened to about 5 other people
as well as myself on a different chat board. Here is a solution: (First uninstall
nero. And do a system restore or start from step 3)
Solution #1:
Step 1: before u install Nero 5551, create a system resore point.
step 2: install Nero 5551
Step 3: copy the Nero directory (incl sub directories) into another folder. I just
zipped all the files and saved it.
Step 4: restore the machine to the system restore point created in Step 1.
Step 5: Move the files back into the Nero directory
Here is another but I'm not sure where to get forceaspii
Solution #2:
Obtain a program called forceaspii
did that to me too. uninstalled nero, put it back in and run forceaspii. its all
good now

After missing my CD, I format my HD & reinstalled WinXP again. Then I installed Nero
5.5.5.1 without problem. The applicattion that fuc*s the CD seems to be MusicMatch
JukeBox. I skip this one cause it includes a driver for the CD that isn't verified
by Microsoft. I've been investigating the solutions you exposed, and Win XP seems
to do not have the ASPI layer needed by some cd-burnig softwares.
