Disabling ''kind-of-file-detection'' (Vids, Pics, Songs...) Feature???

Explanation:
WinXP analyses a folder's content on opening through explorer.exe ....
this is where you get those 'common tasks' (the former web-view) from
(i'm sorry, if those names are wrong, but im currently on a german XP
built, so i don't know their english names for sure).. windows detects
if there are mainly pictures, videos, musicfiles, or whatever in the
current folder... so there often occurs a problem with DivX-files: you
can't delete them becauses explorer.exe tries to detect, what they
actually are... now, this DivX file may be say damaged or simply yet
incomplete ... so win can't finalize its analyse (bad handling of
incomplete divx content) ... and 'hangs' with 100percent CPU usage...
and the inability to delete the file.
Conclusion:
DISABLE this 'feature' (detecting which kind of files a folder
holds).. so you gain the additional benefit of not getting those new
autoplay functions for cds without autoplay.
Problem:
i have absolutely no clue how to disable this feature or if it is
possible at all... if ANYBODY knows how you could do that... PLEASE
post!

To Disable CD autoplay, completely, in Windows XP Pro
1) Click Start, Run and enter GPEDIT.MSC
2) Go to Computer Configuration, Administrative Templates, System.
3) Locate the entry for Turn autoplay off and modify it as you desire.

Thanks, but i know and i don't want to disable autoplay completely. I want to disable
the Feature that Windows ALWAYS scans ANY folder for whatever files there are within...
Therefore deactivating the 'new autoplay' feature (for simple data cds, without native
autoplay.ini) just would be a part of this process (if windows cannot scan a newly
inserted cd, it can not give advices on how to handle those files ;o) )
Anyway, that is NOT my main goal.. i want the scanning completely disabled... if
possible :/ (well i think so, because this wasn't there in 2k ;) )

How do you disable autoplay, completely, in the home version?

Hai There,
I don't know the how to disable the feature but I have a solution.
I had the problem with copying .AVI files from my I-Server to my workstation. It
just wouldn't work. So Before I copy I renamed the AVI files to something else like
.AVS or so.
Then I renamed my DivX movies to .DivX to connect it to the player of my choice.
DivX is for Windows XP not a multimedia format so it will not check the folder or
files constantly.
And the latest DivX drivers doesn't support XP yet so there's really no harm done..
Hopefully it can work for you. If you cannot rename in Explorer try to rename in
a command-prompt screen.
Good luck,
Greetz, C.B.

with ur ftp-client to 127.0.01 and simply delete the file. works great

Unfortunateley I did NOTZ find a good solution for this... :-(
if there WOULD be anyone who could tell me how to cempleteley get rid of this new
explorer *feature* I would re-consider using XP again
That's right, I 'down'graded to Win2k cause it gives the user WAY better controlles
over their OS, and the only real disadvanteg over XP is that 2k takes longer to boot
up.. oh well ;)
so, if anyone has a sollution I will try... the next reinstall is immanent for my
system... so i would try XP once again.... err.. yes ;)

Delete unfinished avifiles
Unfinished download of avi files (divx) can be a trouble in xp. there is a fix to
let xp behave much better so it\'s possible to move or delete large avi files. The
obnoxious bug in XP that causes Explorer to read the entire contents of broken AVI
files before allowing any access to them is caused by bad behavior of shmedia.dll.
To correct this misbehavior in Windows XP, remove the following
registry key.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}\InProcServer32
This will prevent Explorer from loading shmedia.dll in response to file property
queries on these files.
It works great.
Yours P

This tweak can be easily applied using WinGuides Tweak Manager. Download Now!
Windows XP can run slowly when attempting to access a folder that contains a large
number of AVI (Audio Video Interleave) media files. This tweak speeds the process
up by stopping Windows from extracting file information from AVIs.
Open you registry and find the key below.
To disable file information extraction rename the key and place a minus sign infront
of the current name (i.e. "-{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}").
Restart Windows for the change to take effect.
Registry Settings
System Key: [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}]
Disclaimer: Modifying the registry can cause serious problems that may require you

Thanks for the reply. Haven't followed this subject by myself lately because I have
switched 'back' to Windows 2000, since there doesn't seem to be *any* serious reason
why one might prefer XP over 2k. But I'll be sure to archive this tip for later use
(e.g. once M$ and others (drivers etc) stop support for 2k and if Linux is still
not up to it I'd *have* to go for XP so this is very welcome - thanks)

I can tell you that I removed the registry key below and it worked.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}\InProcServer32
The only thing I can add is that it is difficult to find the key, so be patient looking
and double check everything. Once I found the key, I clicked on the +sign next to
it to reveal the "InProcServer32" subfolder and deleted that folder only. I left
the {87D6294-7...} key there.
I would also like to say that I have had this problem since I started using XP about
a year ago. I have asked tons of computer people about it and no one knew. I am
so relieved to finally have found this fix!!!

Thanks for the great tip!! I have a 600MB+ divx file that cannot move or rename or
even delete. Explorer.exe needs to be shut down so I can use console to do whatevere
I like with it.
I believe it is not a native windows problem. It is a file problem since incomplete
and damaged files cause this behavior. The certain file is missing some frames...
Thanks again for helping out...
