XP Pro freezes

I first installed XP Pro, RC1. I experienced lock ups when running Norton AV, Norton Speed Disk, XPs CD burning SW, and other processor intensive apps. The machine would lock up hard. Only the reset button would work. I am aware that previous versions of Norton did not run on XP. I am running Norton 2002, the lastest version that is designed to run on XP. It seems to lock up during CPU itensive tasks, Sometimes it would just lock up for the hell of it. I have reinstalled several times, it would also lock up during the install. Many times it would get to 4 minutes remaining and lock up. That is EXTREMELY frustrating. I am experiencing the same problem with the official release version of XP. Not as frequent, but it still locks up. Any suggestions, please. I have installed the latest XP compatible hardware drivers and it still freezes. Stan

I believe that you have an hardware issue and it's not XP. Be sure all the machine hardware is on the HCL or have the updated drivers from the manufacture. Ray

Regarding your WinXP problem, make sure that your system meets the minimum requirements to drive WinXP ( visit Microsoft.com) . If it does meet the requirements you shoud reinstall XP using the repair mode . I think that your problem might come from an unsufficient RAM ( from my experience you should have at least 128 Meg ram, I suggest more like 256 Meg ram). I'm using WinXp Pro on a AMD Duron 900 Mhz, 256 Meg Ram, install on a logical partition ( My Win 98 Se is still on my primary partion) and everything run smoothly. If you did an upgrade from a previous O/S you will have problems with XP. Do a clean installation from a full version on a separate partition. Hoping this will help, wildsurfercan@hotmail.com

I did just that (clean install on a new drive and partition)and run 384 mhz ram on a p3 700. It went from smooth, to hanging, to non functional in a matter of days.I tried a reinstall from the cd by switching the boot device to the cd but end up at a D:\Windows prompt with no reinstall-ish commands(DOS is not my stong point).Just the generic commands ie cd,format,rd, etc etc.Safe mode system restore hangs with unknown disk error yet scandisk shows nothing. The only new stuff I installed was the plus pack and a windows update that kept nagging me. Any ideas out there?? Jim Layton jim@jlproduction.com

If your computer freezes often. It could be an ACPI error. Check for this error in event viewer. You can fix this two ways. 1) Update your bios to be xp capatible. Re-install windows xp. 2) Re-install windows xp, at first reboot during install, disable acpi power in bios. Finish your installation. This will correct the problem, but you will have to shut off your computer manually after shut down. By Karlito

Either your comp is too slow, your memory is bad or it actually sounds like you have a bad motherboard.

try upgrading your memory as u don't have enough, also amd duron processors are only
half a processor try putting a full amd athlon in, also check your harddrive space
and make sure your not infringing on your pagefile. amd duron processors will fail
to perform when multitasking full athlon won't. way to check what size your pagefile
is right click mycomputer , properties, advanced, advanced, you'll find out how big
your pagefile is at bottom, do not change. check harddrive space to see if free space
is lower than that amount. but i'll lay odds on it being your ram u only have 256,
try just over a gig and u won't have a problem except a slow processor
