Winxp killed my soundcard overnight!!!

The day I installed win xp, I reinstalled my soundcard with new drivers. It worked
just fine. Then a week passed(and it had been working all week), I turn on my computer,
and I get the message that the hardware Id is out of range. "You don't have a soundcard,
or it's not properly installed" What? How didi this happen? I reinstalled it a hundred
times now, but nothing helps. Is there such a thing as Windows kernel sound device?
How do I get it back? Update doesn't help either... This sort of thing makes me want
to blow up my computer(or switch to Linux...)
