Suggestion re: Changing Desktop (Recycle Bin) Icon in XP. Go to Control Panel, Display,
Desktop Tab, Customize Desktop Button, then Select the Icon to change, hit the Change
Icon Key -- and Browse to any Icon you Like. Is there any problem with doing this?
It seems to work.

Win98 will not work. (regedit>HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}Then
change name , F5 to refresh)

What you have to do is go into the registry and go to EDIT on the menu bar. Then
go to FIND. Type in "Recycle Bin" in the search field and make sure all three registry
types are checked. Click on SEARCH and wait until you find a Recycle Bin. Change
only those values that match exactly. Keep hitting F3 until you have changed all
of the values. Close the registry and then click on the desktop (Make sure the outline
is around on of your icons) and then hit F5. All Done! P.S. Make sure you back
up the registry!!!

That's almost the right answer, but it is in HKEY_CURRENT_USER, not Classes_root.

Open up your favorite plain text editor (notepad, for example) and copy the
following text into a new file:
REGEDIT4
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}\ShellFolder]
"Attributes"=hex:50,01,00,20
"CallForAttributes"=dword:00000000
Now save this text file as a .reg file, such as "Rename Recycle Bin.reg" and
put it wherever you like. Double click on the file, and when it asks you if
you want to import it into the registry, choose Yes. You'll notice a new
option in the right-click menu to Rename the Recycle Bin. You can also
rename it by highlighing the Bin and hitting F2, or by highlighting it and
clicking on the file name (just like renaming any other file.
If you want to turn off this new feature, make another .reg file with the
same content as above, but change the first number in the "Attributes"=hex:
line from 50 to 40 and import that file into the registry.
This does work because I have just done it...!!!!

re: Question about changing the Recycling Bin ICON

I've done this several times to change my icon, which is relatively easy. However,
this only works for icons already given to you on the XP system...How would you use
an icon you found online or something?....they never seem to show.

An easy way to rename the recycling bin in win XP is to first create a shortcut of
the recycling bin on the desktop which you can rename by the right click menu. Then
to remove the original icon use the windows xp powertoys tweakui. the options under
desktop allow you to select which icons are desplayed on the desktop (including recycling
bin).

You can rename most anything on the Windows desktop by right-clicking its icon and
selecting the Rename option. But the Recycle Bin doesn't have that option. Both Regedit
and TweakUI make this easy to do.
* Remember to Backup Your Registry *
Here's the Regedit way:
1. Open Regedit (select Run in the Start menu and enter regedit in the text box).
2. Left click the + sign beside "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT" and locate CLSID (the Class ID
option). Scroll down to the {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E} key and click
the folder.
3. In the right-hand window, double-click (Default), and change the name from Recycle
Bin to whatever you prefer.
4. Click OK
5. You can also change the Tip Info as well if you like. Double click on tip info
in the right hand window and change the text to anything you would like. Tip Info
is brought up when you hover on the Recycle Bin icon on your desktop and it gives
you a brief description of what the recycle bin is about (Make it something entertaining)
6. Exit Regedit.
7. To make the new name take effect, click once anywhere on the desktop, then press
the F5 key.

(1 messages posted)
All answers to this Question I've seen so far are mostly what I would call the recycle
bin.......CRAP.
The Following SHOULD Work For EVRYONE......
Open up your favorite plain text editor (notepad, for example) and copy the following
text into a new file:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}\ShellFolder]
"Attributes"=hex:50,01,00,20
"CallForAttributes"=dword:00000000
Now save this text file as a .reg file, such as "Rename Recycle Bin.reg" and put
it wherever you like. Double click on the file, and when it asks you if you want
to import it into the registry, choose Yes. You'll notice a new option in the right-click
menu to Rename the Recycle Bin. You can also rename it by highlighing the Bin and
hitting F2, or by highlighting it and clicking on the file name (just like renaming
any other file.
If you want to turn off this new feature, make another .reg file with the same content
as above, but change the first number in the "Attributes"=hex: line from 50 to 40
and import that file into the registry.

Well it works for icons downloaded from net or otherwise too.
just go to Control Panel/Display/Desktop (tab)/ Customize Desktop (tab)/.........
Now on the small window which is diplaying all existing icons of My computer, My
documents, Recycle bin (full), etc...... here select the icon you want to change
by single-click on it, then press the tab of Change Icon.......
......... on the window that appears now, there is a Browse tab on top........ press
on it and reach Desktop or wherever you have saved the downloaded icons .......
select the new icon which you want for Recycle bin (full)... and then click on
open tab....... you will get the new icon......
click on Ok tab ........ and then apply tab on display window.......
I hope that answers your query......... (this process works for XP, and only the

Easiest way is open start/run/gpedit.msc
then open User configuration/Administrative/ templates/desktop (click the folder),
then just configure Remove recycle bin from desktop.
Dont give bs tweak companys any money for selling you something you allready have.
