I don't know either, all I know is I have the same problem. However, I have had it since Windows 98 when one day my autorun just stopped working. Then I upgraded to XP without fixing that problem, so now I fear that it is unrecoverable. I have the Registry entry set and have not tweaked anything. Any suggestions?

This is how i solved it. I had the same problems with autorun (on XP). I browsed the whole f#cking web for three days and i couldn't find a solution. So i simply restored my computer to the day before this problem occured. All your docs, films, etc etc will be saved. Only your configuration will change. Well, it worked for me...I hope you can use the information...success!!! MeindertV

THIS IS HOW u can re: Question about 'Turn Off the CD-ROM Autorun'

You can disable the CD-ROM autorun by changing this setting, this will stop applications from auto launching when you insert a CD-ROM disc into your drive. Open: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\CDRom Change to value of 'Autorun', or create a new DWORD value if it doesn't exist: (0=disable, 1=enable) Restart Your Computer

If anyone's interested I couldn't get the autorun working with the Registry fix or the Group Policy editor, then I tried using TweakUI for Windows XP and it showed that Autorun was disabled for CD and DVD devices... so I checked the box to enable it and now it's working happily again!

Right click "My Computer", Click "Properties", Click "Device Manager", Double click the CD-Rom Tree, Double click The CD-Rom You want turn "Auto-Run" off of , Click "Settings", Near the middle of the Window there is a setting that says "Auto insert notification", this is your auto-run Feature.

Out of all the suggestions posted, this is the only one that worked for me. BTW, when I ran TweakUI, I found that AutoPLAY was not checked instead of AutoRUN. Thanks to Majik for posting this. :)

Had the same problem. On my new notebook the autorun stopped functioning. I compared the registry entries with my PC running XP too. Found a difference in the NoDriveTypeAutorun. The running value was 95, the failing value was ff. Now I changed this value to 95, did a reboot and the miracle worked. Autorun is now up again. regards, Harry

the auto run function just always get confused when some new drivers or program installed it seems. besides trying all the methods above, maybe you can also try 2 more things: 1) locate and open "group Policy editor"/computer configuration/administrative templates/system/......then disable "turn off autoplay" 2) right click on the drive letter you want to enable autoplay in windows explorer, choose properties/autoplay/.....then select a file type (ex, "music files"), then check the "select an action to perform" and choose an action, now (make sure you only assign an action one at a time) click apply, then click ok and the window will be closed. now, perform the whole sequence to assign an action for each file type one at a time. Doing it this way seems to force the system to better recognized the assigned action. hope it helps.

Start, then Run, then regedit

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom.
Double-click the Autorun value, and type 1 for its value. (If it's not there, create
it by selecting Edit -> New -> DWORD Value, and typing "Autorun" for its name).

I had the same problem. I had to edit the registry. Under (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SeCMACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows NT/CurrentVersion/Winlogon/AllocateCDRoms) change the Data value to (1) for the DisplayType. It worked for me.

I mucked around with this issue for awhile and didn't solve it until I came across Microsoft's nifty autoplay repair wizard which goes through the registry and makes corrections as needed. I used it, it worked, and generates a nice log of what it changed afterwards.

Thanks to Mick, whoever he is, who posted this here .

One more little rule, somewhat related; if you are trying to launch an .exe NOT named "autorun.exe" using autorun.inf for example, make sure it conforms to 8.3 filename format. I had a filename that was tenletters.exe and it wouldn't launch for anything. Thought it was an autorun issue and it wasn't. So before you go wandering through your windows settings . . .
