Question about 'Why can't I get the Direct-Cable Connection to work?'
Thursday, November 15, 2001 at 10:04 pm
Posted by Dina (3 messages posted)

I have a question about Why can't I get the Direct-Cable Connection to work?:

I cannot seem to get my laptop with ME and my PC with XP to share folders. I get the connection going (direct cable) with my laptop as the host. I need to retrieve schoolwork from it, and burn it onto CD's. I have My Docs and C drive set up to share with full access to no avail. The folders do not show up on my PC. Has anyone out there encountered this problem? Does anyone have any idea on how to rectify it? Sincerely, Dina

Windows xp fails with Direct cable connection

I have the same problems trying to get files off my windows 98 laptop to my windows xp desktop. Weird thing is I can see the windows xp files on my laptop, showing that I am connected, but when I switch to use the laptop as host I can't view the files on my desktop with windows xp ( even though the icon in the task bar shows the 2 computers connected ) ??? I think it may have something to do with the NETBEUI protocol not being on windows xp, but mine was pre-installed on my e-machine, so I have no disk to check for the file. If you find a solution, please e-mail me. Thanks

Me too can't get XP & 98 to talk even when connected
Thursday, February 7, 2002 at 9:01 pm
Posted by Kathleen (2 messages posted)

OK, I'm having the exact same problem. I can connect desktopXP(guest) to notebook98(host) including seeing the icon/message showing connection is made but from the XP I can find no indication anywhere as to how to access the hard drive on 98 in order to view & select the folders I set up for sharing on it in order to copy over to the XP. I talked at length with a Compaq rep tonight (that's the new XP) and apparently Mr. Bill has screwed us by disallowing the DCC to actually communicate even though it can be physically connected & confirmed as both pcs connected. He was quite a techno geek & said he thought it must be because of the strict controls XP has written into it to disallow "unauthorized" files & such being brought into the XP system. (Nice feature except when it totally negates a positive like DCC.) I have over a GIG of data files I wanted to move via DCC but it appears I will either have to get a serial/serial data cable & use the Files & Settings Transfer Wizard on XP or get a NIC for the notebook98 and network them. I hate Microsoft sometimes. If anyone hears of a real solution to this actually using the parallel DCC, please advise.

Me either. Am connected but neither computer can see the shared files. Each computer shows its OWN shared files in Explore, Network Neighborhood, etc.. Making me crazy! Also, IE now pops-up a dialog box asking which network protocol I want to use. It lists ONLY the direct connections I've set up, even tho I use Outlook Express, IE, and AT&T cable. Go Figure! So much for the "greatest networking solution (XP) that ever came down the pike."

Make sure you are using a cross-over cable if you are using your parallel ports.

OK I can now grab files from my laptop with Millenium to my XP pc, but not vice versa. After you establish a direct cable connection between XP and any other system you must map to the locations. Here is an a example: Under tools pull down in My Computer there is an option "Map Network Drive" Open that Choose a drive letter, anyone is fine i think x is the default In the place for folder type EXACTLY \\othercomputersname\foldername mine is \\Dina\laptopmydocuments Dina is the name I gave my laptop. How? In control panel, click on network, then identification tab and rewrite or leave name that is there. laptopmydocuments is the name i gave that folder when i allowed it to be shared. So use the \\ very important and you will be able to access any folder on your non XP system via direct cable connection. Still unsure the other way.

Direct Cable connections

ok heres the lowdown: XP has the feature available to view files through DCC but is unable to transfer files to or from the XP computer... if you're connecting two 95/98/ME computers you shouldnt have a problem.. but being as XP is based on the NT operating systems and as any techie knows, most files are not compatable between the 98 and NT systems except for online communications (sever/host connection via TCP/IP)... the only way you MIGHT be able to transfer files is to burn on a disk, ZIP drive or portable media and hope XP recognizes the files and file types.... but for those of you wanting to connect an XP computer with a 95/98/ME computer.... use regular Networking with a hub... provided you have an Ethernet card on both computers

Friend Pierluigi's Post

Friend Pierluigi has given us valuable directions. This software worked for me also,
though I'm looking to see if I can find a freeware one. You *must* read the FAQ on
the website www.briggsoft.com [friend Pierluigi's address does not work]. It gives
you valuable advice on making an ordinary parallel cable (used for printer etc.)
into a *crossover* parallel cable which is necessary for DCC.

For everyone's convenience I put only the crossover settings here though I still
recommend that everyone go to the actual FAQ page as it contains much more information.
Here goes:

>>
Link Maven requires a parallel port transfer cable that plugs into the 25-pin LPT
printer port. These are usually referred to as LapLink or Interlnk cables. Link Maven
does not support serial port transfers. Note that a plain DB25 cable (such as those
used with A/B switch boxs or other devices) will not work. Laplink cables are specially
wired so that their transmit/receive and handshaking wires crossed. This can be checked
with a multimeter device against the following parallel pinout chart:

4-bit parallel pin configuration:

  DB25M DB25M
  ----- -----
    2 ------------- 15
    3 ------------- 13
    4 ------------- 12
    5 ------------- 10
    6 ------------- 11
   10 ------------- 5
   11 ------------- 6
   12 ------------- 4
   13 ------------- 3
   15 ------------- 2
   25 ------------- 25
Note: some link cables have extra pin connections for an 8-bit mode. Link Maven
will work with those cables also as long as they contain the same 11 connections
shown above.
<<

Hope this helps others too.

Hi Guys I guess we all sharing same problem. But i must bring to attention the following. I have Packard Bell (Easy Note) with Win 98 pre-installed on it. I have a desktop with WinXP, i was able to transfer over 1GB worth of data through simple Direct Cable Connection. I have changed my Win 98 to Win ME, and since then I haven't been able to connect again to XP! I followed the same instructions on setting up a direct cable connection as i did with 98! Win ME isn't liking Win XP... it tells me it can't find the host computer even though they are connected! But I will look into this deeper and inform you for any development. Cheers

I wont state the obvious about how stupid this situation is so on with the solution that worked for me. Visit Downloads.com and get DcShare 3.2. Its designed to let DCC computers share an internet link however I set my XP machine up as a DcShare Host and my 98 machine as a guest. With the programs running I found when I ran the windows DCC guest on the 98 machine it managed to find the XP computer name thereby giving me access to the file folders. Best of all DcShare is free! Hope it works for you.

Read Helmig's website on DCC. It helped me a lot. http://network.fament.com/helmig/indexfam.htm Importantly - you need to Enable Browsmaster on the host to s be able to see the files on the guest. On Win98 Start/Settings/Control Panel/Networks - highlight FILE AND PRINTER SHARING click PROPERTIES, select ENABLE BROWSE MASTER. Let me know if it helps

Direct cable networking can be tricky. I suspect that you do not have the host setup properly. You have to add the user name and password that you will allow access via the incoming connections. This must match the login user name and password that either is logged into the guest computer or at the very least, you manually type in when you connect. In addition, you must ensure that there are shared resources on the host, such as a folder. If not, then there will be nothing to share and it won't show up on your guest computer. There are differences between Win98, WinNT and WinXP. I found that XP was fairly simple, once you did all of the configuration changes. I used the network mapping to map directly to the host folder I wanted to share and it connected with no problem.

I have long been angry with the lack of simple and efficient user-friendly programme for the file transfer via LPT (parallel port). Norton Commander was definitely the best... do you remember NC? I have Japanese XP and Russian 95 and had desperately tried to make them friends. I consider Eddie's post to be too important, THANK YOU, Eddie. He recommends using Link Maven - http://www.briggsoft.com/lmaven.htm It should work fine for 30 days. I might even consider buying it. Good luck to everyone, Eddie, thanks again!

One caveat - Link Maven only works with a 25 pin parallel cable, not a serial cable. Any solutions out there for a serial connect?

Have you considered purchasing a parallel cable? You can buy one from Startech.com.
Go to its web site, type either PTXFER6 (6' cable) or PTXFER15 (15' cable) in the
"Find Item:" text box, then click on the "GO" button to look up the item. I *believe*
that you can place an order from the item's info page.

A temporary solution
Sunday, February 2, 2003 at 9:18 pm
Posted by Andy (1 messages posted)

A temporary solution (and a permanent one for me) is to have Windows 98/me installed
on both pc's, (thusly having multiple operating systems on one pc.) Then you can
make the file transfer quick and easy. I NEED this solution, because as far as I
can see, WinXP won't work with the older multiplayer games that I am trying to play,
and they work much better in Win98 anyway.

I already have a laplink parallel cable which used to work fine for the old laptops using Laplink Pro. But it's no good with new laptops. My Dell Latitude has a very strange LPT port nothing like the conventional 25 pin ones we'r e used to.

1. How did you confirm that your existing cable is "no good with new laptops?"

2. Which Latitude model do you have? Can you describe the appearance of its LPT
port?

Let's solve some problems, people.

Thanks for the info. How do I add the user name and password? XP keeps asking me for both when attempting to connect as guest to my Win 98 machine. Thanks. --Kurt

I finally make it to work!! I used windows 2000 as a guest computer and windows xp as a host computer. At first, they can connected to each other but no files can be found. Then, I installed TCP/IP, NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS compatible transport protocol, file and printer sharing for microsoft networks, client for microsoft networks, QoS packet scheduler, NWlink NetBios on both computers. Then I restarted both computers. Then i connect windows 2000 to windows xp. then I find the folder that I want to share in the windows xp, such as C drive. I go to my computer, right click on C drive/ sharing and security/share/ check "share this folder" then go to security table in the same window-> add -> input your username with which you are going to use to log into your host computer from guest computer. I couldn't locate the files in host computer until I did the last step. Good luck, guys.

None of you seems to have a decent answer to why you cannot simply browse, after having connected the XP guest with the XP host ... There is nothing wrong with the connection, the hard disks have been shared, and even when trying to insert the ip adress of the host on the guest, you will get error messages, saying that there is no share ! So if anyone has an acceptable sollution for browsing with a direct cable access network between two Windows XP pc's, please let me know !

The Answer Finally...

Unlike Windows 95/98 Windows XP cannot connect directy though the printer port. You
will need a different cable to conect to both comuter SERIAL ports, rather than printer
port. That is the problem. I Don't know why they did that witht the newer windows
programs but thats the only way you will be able to send your win 95/96 files to
win XP via DCC... Thats it.

You dont have to map the drive

You dont have to map the drive, that just makes it easier to access. You can access it otherwise from Network Nebourhood or from Start Menu>Run>\\Server\Share [Dont actually type \\Server\Share, use the network path]

Fantastic!! Thank you! I tried using DCC first, it would connect the 2 computers (Win95 and XP), but I could not map a drive. Then tried Link Maven, at your adivce, and was able to start transferring files! Had continuous "Link Errors" tho - resyncing - then checked LinkMavens website/FAQ. After turning off DCC altogether (real surprised that it wasn't even needed!), and then turning off the XP Print Spooler, it worked BEAUTIFULLY! Thank God for this forum!!! And thank you all. Tom

Well, I bumped into the same problem yesterday, trying to copy my wife's files to
the XP desktop from a Win98 notebook (both Hungarian). Although XP says parallel
is only for XP-XP and despite the unlucky attempt reported here, I went for the parallel
connection.
When Win98 was the host, I had no luck. XP could ping its address in the command
prompt, but could not find it, neither by IP, nor by name. The I switched, making
XP the host, Win98 the client. And it worked this way! I could find the XP box, opening
the share and copy the files therein. No magic was required.
For what reason? I do not really know. Mine is a fairly simple install, the real
network configured as "Home / Small office" (??). But I think it is quite important
for Windows (for some reason) that the machines are in the same workgroup.
Good luck,
Zs

The solution is to map the drive after connection is made. Right click My Computer, Select--- Map Network Drive, Choose a drive letter in dropdown box In folder box type \\remote computer name\drive name click finish. I spent a day with the settings and this solved problem of not seeing host files in guest file window.

Yeah, that's what fixed it for me, too. The article above gives complete instructions, but mapping the drive "manually" was the sticking point.

Then everytime when I tried to use 98 as host in DCC error message pops up saying "file sharing not enable yet, continue w/o allowing guest to view your files?" rediculous.... the connection going, but I cann't view the 98 files, nothing exist under the its name help please...........

All of that worked for me only AFTER I turned off Windows Firewall on the XP box! Until then, both said they were "connected", but XP (guest) always complained it could not find the host (98 laptop). With the firewall off, the drive mapping worked immediately.

DCC - Getting more SPEED out of DCC
Thursday, December 29, 2005 at 12:50 am
Posted by Hellen D. (1 messages posted)

This will help to get more SPEED out of your DCC Connection: Get the file: http://www.lvr.com/files/ecp-dcc.zip This describes how to build and test an 8-bit ECP cable for Microsoft DCC usage. (if DCC works OK already) I did it using two used printer cables and soldering the correct wires together. Cost: $5 from thrift store. A patch for Microsoft's PARALINK.VXD is included. Caution: The patch DOES NOT make a backup! With this technique, you can hit 400,000 BYTES persec equilivent to USB 1.0 or NIC 10 speeds. This blows away any serial connection speed!!! If you also want Internet connection sharing, get: http://www.netfor2.com/DcShare42.zip ---------------------------------------------------------
