XP Hard-Soft-Ware Incompatibility

After installing XP I have found my Adaptec Easy CD Creator - 4, McAfee Utilities-3, Pacific Digital 2x2x6 CDRW, and Visioneer 6100 USB scanner all useless. The CDRW will read a disk, but will not write to a CDR using the XP drivers. Device manager tells me this drive is working properly. I have contacted most of these manufacturers and either have been ignored, been told that I have to purchase totally new software (no updates to XP on older software) or in the case of Visioneer, that they don't plan to support the scanner for XP. I don't know who to be the angriest with. Microsoft for setting up this mess, or the hardware and software vendors who only seem to be seeking to make a killing selling new software and hardware. Now that I have XP on my system, I like it a lot and would like to keep it. However, does anyone know if you can take it back for a full refund? Or any other solutions? taosing

I'm surprised your CDRW drive won't write using XP's built-in software. I've used it and love it. But I suppose a solution (albeit imperfect) would be to buy a more modern CDRW drive and get the newest software bundled with it. Check Pricewatch.com; I just saw a 20x burner for $68 plus shipping. Not bad. I bought that AOpen 20x burner for my wife's workplace; seems to work fine, but comes with Nero burning software instead of Adaptec. But chances are that XP's burning software will work with a new drive, and I prefer that even over Adaptec. Concerning your compatibility problems, they're to be expected in this particular upgrade. Microsoft had to make a decision: stick with the unstable base of Windows 9x for the sake of hardware/software compatibility, or make the jump to W2000's stable base and put up with compatibility complaints for a couple of years in exchange for a superior OS. I feel for you and others in your situation, but I'm glad Microsoft made the decision they did.

I had the same exact problem at first. No errors with the device but it wouldn't
write with various burning software. 2000 and XP require an ASPI manager. Download
LSI's at http://www.lsilogic.com/support/support+drivers/scsi/w2kaspi.html
After installing, if you are using an ATAPI drive, you need to make a change to the
registry.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\AspiXNT\Parameters

If ExcludeMiniports="" then ATAPI devices are enabled.
                                  If ExcludeMiniports="ATAPI", then ATAPI devices
are disabled.
Found it here. http://www.musicex.com/mediajukebox/aspi.html

I had the same problems with a new Cyberpower system that came with XP on it. The new Cyberdrive cd/rw wouldn't read or write with the XP software. Updated latest patches at MS and the Cyberdrive finally got that part to function. My scsi Umax s6e scanner still being detected and installed at each boot up (it's installed 6 times under unknown devices) and Umax says no problem just buy another new scanner. What a mess, been weeks trying to make new products work as advertised.

I have a mustek 1200 usb scanner which was also not supported . However I downloaded the windows 2000 drivers from the web site and tried installing them . I eventually persuaded them to install with a registry hack but you may find that windows 2000 drivers from visioneer will load straight away or under compatability mode . Failing all that if you don't like tinkering with the registry I have a small visual c++ utility which I am working on which may do the job .Ian

I think this link might be able to help you. I also have been searching for a driver that will work with Windows XP after using Windows 98. My 1200 usb plus scanner was useless. Try this link: http://www.mustek.com.tw/Download/html/install_xpc_eng.html
