Win XP Mapped Drives

When mapping network drives in Win XP, they do not automatically reconnect at startup.
The mapping is enabled at startup, but Win XP does not automatically "connect"; they
will only reconnect if you go to Explorer or you open a file on the mapped drive
via a shortcut. This is causing problems with applications (Peachtree Accounting)
which don't actually access the mapped drive when it starts, but merely checks to
see that there is an existing connection. Microsoft says the fact that the mapped
drives don't automatically reconnect is "by design" (how ignorant is that?). Does
anybody have a solution or a workaround? Thanks.

Make sure you have "Reconnect at Logon" checked in your mapping. http://www.dummies.com/WindowsXP/0-7645-0897-0_0004.html
Microsoft says it won't reconnect if the resource is offline but "Reconnect at Logon"
should work just like previous versions...although I have not actually tried it yet.

Yes, I have checked it to reconnect at logon. However, in Win XP, this only reestablishes
the mapping of the drive when the computer restarts. The mapped drive will not actually
"connect" until it is accessed. Microsoft claims it designed it this way in XP in
order to reduce boot time. (Even though you waste that same amount of time manually
connecting to it after booting.)

I have a user on Windows XP that cannot map to a network drive. The message keeps
appearing for the person to enter their user name and password. When she tries to
put her user name and password, the error message appears "logon unsuccessful: The
user name you typed is the same as the user name you logged in with. That user name
has already been tried. A domain controller could not be found to verify that user
name." Any suggestions?
