Sidewinder GamePad non-USB isn't recognised in WinXP

...hello, I own an older non-USB MS sidewinder gamepad and recently updated my system to WinXP Pro. Since then, the gamepad isn't recognised by the OS, and it isn't available under the "Add" menu in the Game Controllers applet. Has anyone else run across this problem? Is there a fix or update I need? Thanks in advance.

Do you mean there is nothing listed to add in Game controllers? I'm assuming you were following this article : http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q298/0/62.ASP?LN=EN-US&SD=tech&FR=0&qry=sidewinder&rnk=2&src=DHCS_MSPSS_tech_SRCH&SPR=WINXP If you had the game controller plugged in when you upgraded, it may cause the OS to not recognize it now. Microsoft recommends unplugging all peripheral hardware before upgrading\installing.

There are game controllers listed, but unlike preivious versions (95/98/ME) XP does not list it by the brand name (i.e. Microsoft SideWinder Game Pad), however it does list generic 4, 5, and 6 button controllers. This is an 8 button controller however, so the other "generic" controllers will not work, I tried already to add it after upgrading. However, I've not tried using the MS Sidewinder (Auto-Detect) yet. Perhaps that will fix it. Thank you for your help. :)
