Sys Idle Process - XP

In windows task manager (XP) the "CPU" colum refers to how much the process is using of the CPU correct? Well if this is, "System Idle Process" is using 95-99 of my CPU? In the performance tab, the CPU window doesnt agree with that though. It saying 0-4% of the CPU is in usage. What exactly is going on? Another quick question, XP only allows 16/32 BIT colors?

The "system idle process" usage is normal. Mine says the same thing and I have no problems with my PC. You stated in the other thread that you are not running Anti-Virus software. From the symptoms you are describing...maybe you have a virus? You can check your system at www.symantec.com. The number of color's you can display depends on your video card's capabilities (driver). Most have 256, 16, 24, and 32 bit options though so, I agree, it is rather strange to just have 16 and 32.

The system idle process isn't really a process. Its a measurement of how much processor time isn't being used. Thus, 100% (full usage) - 0%to 4% (services, drivers, mouse movement) = 95% to 99% idle time.
