Try as I might I can't get further than the first reboot at which time a screen appears telling me that a piece of hardware isn't installed properly. At this stage my system has frozen and a reset is required at which time the only way forward is to cancel the XP install. Thus far, therefore, XP is in the box and not on my box! Help!

First remove (unplug) any peripherals from your computer before attempting an install (printers, scanners, usb devices, etc). You may want to run the hardware compatibility check or check microsoft's website before installing to see if you can figure out which piece of hardware is causing the problem. You may need to reseat the cable if it is the hard drive. Also Flash the BIOS to the latest version. What you do to resolve the problem really depends on what hardware device is causing the problem.
