Click on Proprities
Click on the Screen Sver tab
Click on Power Sttings
Click on the APM tab
Check the check box that says enable Advandaced Power Management."

You wouldn't happen to be using Easy CD Creator by Adaptec (Roxio) would you?

I have the same problem, and yes, I'm using EZCD. Is MS telling me I shouldn't use
non-MS software?

I don't have an APM tag - there is a tag labeled advanced but it doesn't have the
box with the option to enable Advanced Power Management

Power management now seems to require a specific power management driver . You are
unlikely to be able to obtain one for an older pc - hence no "tag" . Microsoft needs
to be able to shut your machine down if xp detects pirated software or perhaps even
software capable of piracy .Hence the problems with easy CD , scanners etc .Ian.

Power management now seems to need a power manager driver . You are unlikely to be
able to obtain one for an older pc . Microsoft seems to want to have the ability
to remotely disable computers , presumably when it finds duplicate OS software .
This may be the second line of defence after someone comes up with the hardware hashing
function to enable xp without a valid licence key . This presumably explains why
any device capable of piracy - particularly cd re-writers , scanners etc are needing
new drivers - the new drivers will almost certainly have copyright protection embedded
instead of a warning about ye lore .Ian.
