Question about 'Making Sure the Correct HAL is Installed'

Any idea why after upgrading win 98 to win XP, the PC will not boot and the message "file hal.dll is missing or corrupted" appears? Could the file be corrupted on XP CD? Could BIOS version affect this? Tried it twice. MS support is of no help.

Hey Rick, I have the same exact problem and have not yet found a solution. It is kinda strange that after I boot to Win 98SE and then restart again once or twice, I am able to load XP without problems. It is quite annoying, though.

I found the fix to this problem. 1. It is the corruption of the boot.ini file. 2. To fix it, I did a parallel install of XP to create a new boot.ini file and get access to the PC. 3. I have seen references to booting off of the XP CD-ROM and this works by going to setup and then selecting "Repair". This only works however when the setup program actually sees the installation to repair. In my case it did not, so I did the paralleled install. 4. Using the paralleled install, I modified the boot.ini file so that it would boot off of my old installation and not the new one. This is done by change the reference for the [boot loader] section to refer to the original install folder. In my case, the big issue was that the boot.ini was corrupted by a program called BOOTXP and it was not referring to the correct partition. 5. The only down side is that I had to reactivate XP. After all of this, I am back in business and no thanks to MS Support. They were not sure what to do. If you want info. on how to delete the paralleled install, let me know. Hope this helps.

Try running scandisk from a win 98 boot disk. It froze after about 34% and after repairing several files. So i rebooted (ctrl+alt+del) and it booted ok-but lost some settings. hope this worx 4 u 2!

I found the problem and the solution. After much headaches, found out that the boot.ini file is the cause of the problem. Somehow it was deleted on my machine (but XP can act otherwise). Solution: Boot from XP CD. Select Repair console. change to C:\ directory run a command called bootcfg C:\bootcfg /scan Then run C:\bootcfg /add select from the list C:\bootcfg /default select from the list again. You are done. reboot the machine and everything should come back to normalcy (well pray too....)
