Question about 'My Taskbar has disappeared - how do I get it back?'

I have a question about My Taskbar has disappeared - how do I get it back?:

When I was using command prompt in XP and exited it My taskbar and all my icons disappeared from the desktop. Is there anyway to get them back, because restarting the system doesn't help. I have been running programs from the taskmanager.

Have you tried pressing CTRL+ESC or the Windows Key? That should bring up your start
menu, even if the taskbar has been shoved to the bottom of the screen. If you can
get to Control Panels, then Taskbar and Start Menu, you can probably find a way to
get it back, then. If you take off "Lock the Taskbar" then you SHOULD see something
at the bottom of the screen to drag the size back up again. Other than that, I have
no clue.

My kid had the same problem. Went in as administrator and deleted his IDENTITY. Gave him another IDENTITY and it works fine.

I had the same problem. I asked on Experts-Exchange and someone referred me here. I managed to solve this problem by using the Windows XP Repair function that you get when you boot off of the CD. Now everything is back to normal although I did have to reinstall some drivers (but I didn't lose programs or work). Hope this helps if you still have the problem! N.

We found a trojan (backdoor.sdbot.gen) and removed it , the taskbar and desktop icons reappeared. We had to run it on another anti-virus program because Norton didn't catch it. Hope this fixes your problem.

Yeah sometimes this happens to me on Win2k. Try using the inwdows key to get the start menu visible again and then go to settings on the menu. Go into the task bar and menus settings. Check the autohide checkbox and then repeat the whole process again except this time clearing it. It should come back then

While my Thinkpad-modified version of XP Pro has proven 99.999999 stable, a recent install on a new P4 machine shows at least two disturbing, posibly related problems including the taskbar/icon vanishing act - which seems to occur when a request is made to do something "impossible" - like refresh a file still showing open on the screen though it has been deleted (why the situation eists in the first place is a mystery...). My easy solution has been either to three-finger-salute and force a shut-down of all non-responding apps and folders. If this doesn't solve the problem than rebooting corrects it. Considering this is SP2-included edition, it seems there's more sloppiness coming out of Redmond. The second problem concerns a significant lack of folder-style memory and a very annoying default to Tiles/Auto Arrange/By Name though "W2K Classic" styles are specified throughout. Anyone got an idea where in Registry to fix this one - along with the chronic failure to FAIL to start various crucual and standard services, esp. print spooling?

fantastic solution. no one was able to solve this for me before. everytime i minimized my program it disappeared. after i ran the link below it fixed the problem. another problem i was having was the menu and tabs on the task manager had disappeared. to get this back press ctr+alt+backspace. just a side tidbit since when the icons dont show in the taskbar the only way to know what programs are open is the taskmanager. and if that does not work properly it make life hard.

That does not work here. All that does is take me to my documents. This happened once before and I don't know how I fixxed it; but I did.The problem started somewhere in Cartoon Network- maybe Totally Spies. This is an adware/spyware/virus problem not a simple fix like typing explorer.

I downloaded and used the simple app. from that link and it came right back up. Whomever it was that suggested that tool, Kudos to you my friend. Thank you.

When I tried to download the "Taskbar is Missing" download, Norton AntiVirus detected a high risk Malicious Script. I wouldn't say this is a download you want.

That's an error on Norton's part, not the script. Because the script resets the taskbar to the default settings. It may appear to be malicious to Norton but in fact resetting the taskbar is exactly what you the user wants! Of course, it's up to you, I used the script and it worked as did many others in this thread. If you are uncertain, download the script, open it in notepad and check the code. It's legit. at the end of the day, it's up to you, suffer a missing taskbar or get it back easily!

Does anyone know if this is a virus, or am I running conflicting programs to have this happen? Also, do I have to download the Kelly's fix to keep it from happening again? Thanks again- I am bookmarking this site!

You can do the Kelly's Corner fix manually if u want. Go to the task manager (CTRL,ALT,DEL)
and go to File and click on New Task. In the box type in explorer.exe and it should
come back. (If it doesnt close all instances of explorer.exe and do the same process
over again). Good luck!

Hi, I was in the same boat as you, nothing on this page worked until it occurred to me that the explorer was already runing when i was trying to run it again in the task bar. I went to the task Manager, clicked on the processes tab and looked for explorer.exe. Highlighted it, and clicked end Process; all my Icons on my desktop disappeared. Then i clicked File, New Task and typed Explorer in the edit box and voila my task bar is back.

None of the mentioned strategies helped resolving the problem in my case, although some led to a transient reappearance of the taskbar before it disappeared again. And no, it wasn't simply hidden, although yes, this option was activated, but deactivating it didn't bring the taskbar back. However, I realized that the taskbar was present at system startup until the launch of a certain program. In my case this was ObjectDock (from Stardock). Somehow my user profile of ObjectDock has been corrupted and subsequently the taskbar option of this program was set to remove the taskbar. Closing this process via the task-manager, closing explorer.exe and restarting explorer.exe via >file >new task brought my taskbar back. So, if you don't know how to resolve the issue, try to close all processes of accessory programs that potentially alter your taskbar, then close explorer.exe (all via the task-manager) and finally relaunch explorer.exe as described. If this didn't work I would suggest to "repair" your Windows XP as a last resort. A broken registry could be the cause if it's not a common software-interference problem. Alternatively you could try to delete your XP user profile (after backing up user data in the hidden folder "application data" under >C: >documents and settings >respective user) and create a new one. This will only work if the user is not "the" Administrator (many users can be Administrator but only one user can be "the" Administrator, i.e. named Administrator besides having Administrator privileges...if you know what I mean). GOOD LUCK!!!

I have tried all the fixes on here and so far this is the only one that works. However, this doesn't get rid of whatever caused this does it? I have tried scanning with AVG it found nothing, the Symantec site says the backdoor trojan thingy was easy to remove but I couldn't find anything on how to remove it. I am continuing to look as I think this thing will come back once I close down. BTW thanks to all who have given suggestions on how to fix this.

Problem solved with one of the scripts

Since installing and uninstalling an Alienware GUI interface my Taskbar had been stuck on the left hand sie of the screen. Just recently the icons had been stuck on Large size. Additionally there was a weird partition down the middle of the Taskbar with large icons on one side and small ones on the other. The fixall script sorted it out in a jiffy. Many thanks for the helpful post.

The following worked for me!

ctrl-alt-del -- to Task Manager
File, New Task (Run...)
Type "control" and hit enter -- to bring up Control Panel
Double click the Taskbar and Start Menu icon
Uncheck the "Lock the Taskbar" box and apply.

OK, here's what worked for me. My taskbar was missing, as were my desktop icons. None of the key combinations would bring up a start menu, and the kelly's korner download did nothing, either. Here's what I did: Open an Explorer window. If you can't get to one, then here's how to get one from IE (and Firefox, too, I think). Open the file menu (Page in IE7), and select "Save As". This will bring up a save dialog box. Find a folder icon, and right-click on it to bring up a context menu. Select "Explore", and voila! Your have a file explorer open. Next, navigate to the control panel and open "Taskbar and Start Menu". Change a setting (I toggled "Hide Inactive Icons") and click "Apply". It seems that Windows applying settings to the taskbar restores it. Hope this helps someone!

This is a very old thread, but for those finding this through a search engine....

Summary: Kill off all explorer processes and start a new one which should then
manage the task bar.

Steps:
Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up the Task Manager
  Click the Processes Tab
Sort by Image Name (click "Image Name)
  End all "explorer.exe" tasks
  Click the Applications tab
  Click the "New Task..." button
Type "explorer" in the "Open:" drop-down (or select it from the drop down)
  Close the Task Manager

I have this same problem and nothing so far has worked. However you can still acess
open programs e.g internet explorer but pressing Ctrl Alt and Delete together, choosing
the programme and clicking Switch To.
Other than that I have no idea.

This is a very long thread, full of possibilities. When you say "nothing has worked", did you work through them all ? Particularly the post before yours, and this tweak (row 117, LH column) at kellys-korner.

Here's something I haven't seen mentioned - two separate video cards might be enabled. I tried the onboard video on a lark (it sucked) and when I switched back to the card, windows 'helpfully' extended my desktop onto the second monitor. Turning the desktop extension off and then disabling the second graphics card for good measure worked for me.

Try this,

Open Task Manager by pressing ctrl + shift + esc
Find a process called Explorer.exe
End that process
Use File -> new task
and type explorer.exe in the popup,

Hope it works...

I had the same exact problem, I spent about 20 minutes looking through forums and such, until I looked at my display settings. I forgot, when you have two display adapters(two video cards i.e. on-board and another card) you can choose if your display goes onto the other card(for another monitor). The way to fix this is; right click on the desktop, click properties, select advanced tab(after this you should see a big 1 and 2) click on 2 and uncheck "extend my windows desktop onto this monitor". This should solve your woes.
