My guess would be a bad WIN XP CD. I would take it back to where you bought it and get them to "exchange" the software. They can't return software, but they should exchange for the same thing.

I'm having the same problem, and I know my CD is fine. I've successfully installed XP on one machine, and it's on the second machine that I get the error. This leads me to think that it's a hardware incompatability thing. I'll post back here if I find anything out.

Copy \I386 directory to the harddrive, get a copy of Controls.man from a working CD-ROM (X:\I386\ASMS\6000\MSFT\WINDOWS\COMMON\CONTROLS)and place in the copied directory.

Controls.man is a XML file responsible for registring the common controls in Windows (e.g. buttons, message boxes)

You can also copy and paste the content of the file below:

[Content of Controls.man]

ToolbarWindow32
ComboBoxEx32
msctls_trackbar32
msctls_updown32
msctls_progress32
msctls_hotkey32
msctls_statusbar32
SysHeader32
SysListView32
SysTreeView32
SysTabControl32
SysIPAddress32
SysPager
NativeFontCtl
Button
Static
Listbox
ScrollBar
SysLink
tooltips_class32
ButtonListBox
SysAnimate32
SysMonthCal32
SysDateTimePick32
ReBarWindow32
Edit
Combobox
ComboLBox

[End of content]
Paste the data above into Notepad and save as CONTROLS.MAN. If there are html tags in your pasting, remove them. Hope this helps!

In response to this problem of the incorrect parameter, I have come across this a few times whilst trying to install xp prof, the way I get round it is to set the pc up as basic as possible. i.e. One hard drive (Master) and one CD Drive (as the slave) on the same IDE cable. I remove all the cards and only plug in a graphics card, a mouse, a keyboard and some memory. It has worked every time so far, although it seems that some of the more complex graphics cards have issues so it is safer to use the most basic you can find. Andy.

I had this same problem. I isolated it to the CONTROLS.MAN file in the CD Drive:\I386\ASMS\6000\MSFT\WINDOWS\COMMON\CONTROLS directory. Every attempt to copy this file generated a failure to read drive error. This all was the result of a bad CD. When I used a new CD it installed without any problems.

I can confirm, I just had the same problem and it was caused by the media (the cdrom used). The media (CDR) had no scratch but wouldn't work. I used another media (older with little scratches) and everything went fine. Didn't try to scratch the cd to see if it would work then ;-) Definitly XP is bad with media when on install.

I was installing this program on a number of computers. My first install went flawlessly. However, the next three all came up with this error! What was different? I had just bought and installed a new $15 cd rom drive in the first computer. I pulled it out and replaced the burner in each of the other computers and it picked right up and installed from the fail point. Pretty flipping weird.

.

hello,

same problem here, but solved it by using the dvd-rom player instead of the cd burner,
whereby the problem was initially encountered.

Used the same cd-rom disc without any issue.

So, try first this approach before freaking out.
Hope this helps.

abramo

Apparently this is still a problem with XP Sp2. But the solution of avoiding the CD burner worked well. Thank you.

Your solution has worked for me too abramo thank you! I was setting windows XP with sp3 to my old computer when I have encountered this problem. I changed my cdrom and it is resolved.

All this sounds good till you realize the CD is read only so editing the controls.man file can not be done unless you copy the entire CD off somewhere, modify the file, then burn a new CD. Anyway in the middle of that process, so will see how it goes. OMR

One more note: The instruction at MickeySoft's site: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/311755 says cd C:\$win_nt$.~ls You need to open shell to command prompt @ c: and run "dir /w" as this directory name changes from install to install. Mine was C:\$win_nt$.~bt. If there is a way to edit in this directory and then continue the install, from the error this would be helpful, rather than all the trouble of copying and re-burning the CD after mod to the controls.man file. OMR

I'm having a similiar problem with starting up windows XP setup. I reformatted the computer, then it boots from the CD-Rom drive, but when I get to the install asms part, it won't read the drive when I click "Ok", even though the CD is in the drive. The screen just hangs at that part and won't do anything, no matter how many times I press OK. I only have one CD/DVD drive on my Dell Dimension 4700, and I'm unsure how to get around this.
