Question about 'Hide all Icons on the Desktop'

There is a much simpler way to do this in XP. Right click on the desktop, click on
arrange icons by, then click on Show desktop icons. Thats all you gotta do.
PS. This is a great website, keep up the great work.

Really? I tried it in XP Pro & couldn't do it! I got the 4 standard arranging options,
align to grid & auto arrange, and a grayed-out "show in groups!"

Yeah, I did it..you have to put Active Desktop on, which I usually avoid..but it's
worth it..mayhaps I'll post a few screenshots of the looks I'm playing around with...

To make the icon text transparent right click on My Computer and go to Properties
or go to System in Control Panel. Go to the Advanced tab, then click on Performance
Settings, and select Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop.

1. Right Click on an empty area of the desktop and select Properties.
2. From the Properties Window click the tab named "Desktop".
3. From the Window you get click on the "Customize Desktop" tab and then check mark
the boxes of the required Icons.
4. click Apply & OK

You can use Iconoid to hide icons, set transparent background and many other things.
It works on Windows XP and it' a great tool.

I use xp pro.... and Larry's tip was excellent. So simple, I'd have thought of
it..... plus you don't need to download any unnecessary programs just to hide desktop
(which i've done for previous windows versions)

Hi, Larry!
Working on my wife's co-worker's Win2000 pc on a un-related problem. I noticed that
he had no icons on his desktop and he didn't know why, either. Before I got a chance
to address that problem, we had to call it a day.
Will this work on Win 2000?
Thanks in advance,
Bob

Hello all..... or you can put all your Desktop Icons in a toolbar at the top of the
page in XP and hide it till you mouse is near it.......
1. Go to my Doc's and make a new folder and call it ( My Toolbar ).
2. Right click the Task bar ( Bootom bar ) and click Lock the task bar so the tick
is not there anymore.
3. Now right click the taskbar again and select Toolbars and select New tool bar
at the bottom.
4. Now a Box comes up asking you where you want to save to. Select the ( My Toolbar
in my Doc's you made in step 1 ).
5. Now if you look at the task bar ( bottom right ) again you will see My Tool bar.
Click, hold and drag to the top of the screen, now you will see a Toolbar at the
top.
6. Now go back to My Doc's and open your ( My toolbar folder ) and drag all your
desktop Icons in this folder except the Recycle bin.
7. Now right click on your new toolbar at the top of the page and select ( view )
large or small and then show text so the tick has gone and make sure you tick ( Always
on top ) and you can also tick ( Auto Hide ) ect.... what ever you like.
8. Now Go back to your taskbar again ( Bottom ) and right click again and select
( lock the taskbar ) so the the tick is showing..
9. Thats it looks good and keeps the destop clean no software.... Any Problems send
me a message....Cheers..

When I log on to windows 2000 pro, the desktop appears as a blue background and nothing
else is visible even the task bar. The mouse pointer is visible and can move around.
I can start command prompt when I press control+alt+del and then task manager, then
new task, butI cannot do anything in windows since everything appears to be behind
a blue background. Help

Quite possibly. Otherwise, your best bet is that Explorer (the Windows shell which
controls the icons, taskbar, tray, etc.) crashed. It can (sometimes) be restarted
through the Task Manager. Also, if Iconoid (or another icon program) is installed,
they sometimes have an option to hide icons based on idle time or mouse position.
.:~mzhao~:. The one and only.
