XP: Don't even think about it..

I recently tried an upgrade from 98. By the time I got the incompatability report, there wasn't anything but my old MS mouse and possibly my monitor that would work. The worst was the motherboard, a fairly recent Abit BE6II wasn't one of the ones the tech at MS said would work. The Highpoint 366 Udma Controller was the "blocking issue". From what the tech at MS told me there is a huge money grab going on from hard and software companies including MS to get the bucks and worry about compatability "issues" later. The MS Techs I've dealt with have all been top of the line, and this guy was no exception. ( pun intended) None of my Norton stuff would work. No Adaptec stuff works, very few CDRWs ( lot's of them have Adaptec SW), and that's just the stuff that's "known". I ended up getting an upgrade of my early (ver 4.10.1998) Win98SE to a later 4.10.2222 version. The whole debacle was over installing a new 1394 card and a Sony CRX1650L-A2. After I did the upgrade to xxxxx.2222 it went in, patched to accept the CDRW, and it Runs GREAT. Wrte speed really IS 16x. RW really is 10x, and the "B's" software really DOES make the RW work like a 650meg floppy. Got a 4 year warrantee, and will try to use it in a couple years. Now, to the JVC Mini Dv...

Say Eric, I'll happily give you $10 for the XP that didn't work... c'mon, make me a deal. If it's that bad, I'll give you ten bucks for the legal CD.....
