You can uninstall windows XP only if you installed it from the upgrade version.
To do this simply click:
Control Panel>add & remove programs> Uninstall Windows XP
its near the bottom of the list there.
It worked for me i'm back to my 98SE until i can get a OEM version of XP. Hope it
helped.

If you installed it as an upgrade, simply go to Control Panel, select ADD/REMOVE
PROGRAMS, and select Windows XP. In a couple of minutes your old 98 or ME will appear,
just as it was before XP came upon the scene. If it wasn't installed as an upgrade,
then it's a bit more complicated.....

I installed it from an OEM disk on a new harddrive. I need to uninstall it because
I was just trying it on my spare computer to see if I was going to like it. Now
I have to uninstall it so I can install it on my primary computer. But the uninstall
command didn't work. Can you help?

Michael,
Did you ever solve your problem? I have XP on a separate hard drive also, and I'm
not finding any solution except for re-formatting.
Thanks,

Keely,
No easy solution. But my concern was addressed by microsoft. I told them about
my delema, they told me to remove it (noting about reformating). I did, and when
I re-installed it on a different computer and called them, they took my word for
it. I have two other computers with other home XP versions it installed on them,
so that might have helped.
Good luck,
Michael

1st, find someone using the same operating system that you are going to go to, IE
Win98 etc - get them to make a boot disk for you, but also copy the format.exe off
there computer onto the boot floopy, can be found in C:/Windows - if not, do a search
2nd, u will need to change the boot order in your bios XP obviously boots from the
hard drive b4 anything else, we want the floppy, usually (i speak from limited experiance)
you press a button as soon as the computer starts, on my computer its Del, and on
my friends its F4, but whatever, in thier you should be able to find an option, if
not then don't read on cos i cant help you
3rd, you should eventualy come to a DOS screeen asking if you want to boot from hard
drive or cd rom, you don't want either, if you look at the bottom it should give
you a command to go to DOS, off the top of my head its Ctrl + F5 or summit, well
it should tell you
4th, now your in DOS, make sure your on the floppy prompt A: and type format C:
- should look like
A:/> foramt C:
or simiar, folow the steps and make sure u put the right CD in for instalation :D
--
this is pretty vague but use your initiave and you should be able to stumble through
it, don't worry you CAN get rid of XP i have, although i'm back on it now, it is
possible to format it
note: you must use the coropsnding boot floopy, for some reason one format.exe differes
from another
GL and gimme a e-mail if alls succesfull, if not, then tough, you shouldnt have wanted
to know :D

Check out:
http://www.windowsreinstall.com/install/uninstall/winxp.htm, or search for "osuninst.exe"
from Google. There you'll even find pages at Annoyances.org.
However, I have two OS installed on my computer -- 1 on each of two partitions (as
it should be, as this doesn't mess up each one's Registry, etc.). I just want to
remove XP, which was installed fresh on a separate partition (not on top of another
OS). The easiest was is to simply wipe and reformat the XP partition. However I was
concerned that this would leave the boot-up options (which let you choose which of
the OS to boot) intact and unabl;e to remove them. As it turned out, you can just
delete XP and worry about that later, though, as I describe below.
1. Create a Win98 bootable floppy (format + copy system files)
2. Copy c:\windows\command\attrib.exe and sys.com to the floppy
3. Reboot using the floppy. Type A:\sys c: (if C: is the partition you want to keep
which has Win98 on it, and D: contains XP). This will restore the original booting
option to be Win98-only by restoring the system (i.e. bootup) files.
4. (this step may not be necessary, though it won't hurt, either) You'll get an error
that it couldn't copy command.com. If so, then type "A:\attrib -S -H c:\comamnd.com",
"del c:\command.com" and "copy c:\windows\command.com c:\command.com"
5. Reboot without the floppy. It should go straight to Win98 without the XP options
screen.
6. Delete c:\boot.ini, ntdetect.exe and ntldr. These are hidden files, so you'll
have to make them visible first (View->Options->uncheck not displaying hidden files).
7. Wipe and reformat your d: partition. Goodbye XP!
-----------------
Additional stuff I checked (just details, unnecessary for the removal of XP, but
left for completeness sake):
Hence before deleting the partition (or running the directions from the link referenced
above) I wanted to first make the other OS the default OS in the bootup process.
This is done in WinXP Pro (and probably Home, too) as follows:
- Right-click on "My Computer" and choose "Properties".
- Select the "Advanced" tab.
- Click the "Settings" button under "Startup and Recovery".
- Change the drop-down list to the other OS.
- (optional) change the "Time to display list of OS" to 0-2 seconds
And then I discovered the "To edit the startup options file manually, click Edit"
button, which opens the "boot.ini" which is stored in the root directory of the active
(FDISK) partition. Voila!
I discovered a bunch of other system files there, too, and made a copy of them. This
copy turned out to be important when I hadn't copied "sys.com" to the bootable floppy
and needed to reboot to Win98, but couldn't without these deleted files.
I then tried to follow the link's instructions via MSDOS (for FAT partitions), and
that didn't work. From Safe Mode with Command Prompt it worked, but the program told
me that it couldn't uninstall XP because it didn't have the necessary registration
information. I didn't know what that was (and couldn't find out from the web), but
assumed that it meant that I had to activate my XP installation before I could uninstall
it. Gee. I didn't want to do that because of the annoying activation process, but
did so, anyway, to no effect. Then MS tech support told me how to do it, which are
the 8 steps I wrote at the top.
- osuninst.exe will only work if XP was installed on top of another OS, i.e. not
if it was a clean install on a new partition. They mention that in the KB article
for the Add/remove programs option, but not for the osuninst.exe option.

I am in the unhappy situation, from what has been said on Annoyances, that I installed
XP on a pristine drive. I found that I can't network with my other computers which
are Windows 2000. Even trying fixes published in other places in this website.
Well, if I can't network, what good is it. I found that I can't boot to DOS and
I want to go back to Windows 2000 for this machine. Is there anything I can do to
expunge XP? Thanks,
Dave

Hello. My name is Roberta Gallant and I reside in Concord, New Hampshire. I am

Right now I have a problem. When I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Microsoft
Windows XP Home Edition Upgrade, my personal computer's monitor screen showed me
a "Setup cannot install Windows XP because the necessary registration information
is missing" error message. What are the other ways, if any, I can uninstall and
reinstall Windows XP Home Edition Upgrade on my computer now? Have you any idea
of how I can do just that? I need your help with this problem?
Please email me back at lilacmay4@attbi.com. I anticipate hearing from you. Thank

If you answered NO to that question, then you wouldn't have the option of easily
un-installing XP.
Honestly, XP is a LOT better than the previous OS's. Back up all of your data files,
and give XP the benefit of the doubt by doing a boot-to-XPCDROM and select the option
of doing a cold clean full install of XP. It's worth it.

It seems if you had Windows NT or Windows 2000 prior to performing the upgrade to
Windows XP, you are not given an uninstall option in the end. I have the same problem,
so, I don't know. All I can say is back up your files and choose either XP (it will
run slightly faster) or your previous OS to install as a clean install.

How to uninstall reinstall windows XP if you have the CD
Thursday, August 14, 2003 at 12:31 am Posted by Thomas Vincent
(1 messages posted)
Ok, my problem was that, i had only one partition on my hard disk and i couldn't
uninstall the OS from there. I tried for the osuninstall.exe, but mysteriously, i
was missing the log file for that. I tried re-installing with the CD from XP itself,
but it reinstalled, but kept all the old file and couldn't partition the disk either.
So this is what i did.
This only helps if you want to un-install and re-install XP and partition your Hard
Disk while you are at it.
** Jesus saves! Saves you, but not your work! So make sure that you do a good back
up of the system, before attempting any re-installation etc.
** Insert the CD with XP on it.
** Go to set up (press F2 when the computer starts)
** Go to boot options
** Disable booting from floppy or hard drive(Shift+1), or some other key like that(
i dunno where you got your computer from, but mine is a Dell)
** Save changes and exit
** Select Windows XP Setup from the succeeding menu
** When you are prompted with the options, select the drive on which XP is located
and choose format
** Hope you have done the back up! DOH!
** Format the drive
** You can chose to partition the drive at this stage
**Proceed with the rest of the installation
**And thats it!
Hope this was of any use to you!

has passed so I can't login to it anymore. I can boot up command prompt save mode
I have tried uninstalling it using the commabd osuninst.exe but it says "setup can
not uninstall windowsXP becausethe necassary registration information is missing".

GREETINGS TO ALL,
The main problem to identify is win x'sannoyance of locking down the files so you
can't easily do anything with them. A fresh install of it, or another os like ME/98SE
could make all in this forum happier.
the ideas or principles are simple:
1) boot from a bootable floppy or cd.
2) format the hard drive partition containing windows xp.
* Note that there are more than a few ways of doing this. You can use fdisk
from microsoft, however, there is a much better way. I use a partitioning utility
program, partition magic 7.01 from Power Quest. To do this now in case you are in
limbo, will require access to a computer with a correctly running windows program.
Install PQ magic, and then choose to make an emergency disk. This will make a bootable
disk and a non bootable disk(2 floppies).
Now place the first disk(bootable) into the floppy disk of your misbehaving computer,
and hit cntrl-alt-del and reboot the computer. As before go into the bios to make
sure that you have boot from a drive first, then save and exit. Computer then should
boot to a prompt. a:>
Now take out first floppy and place second floppy in the a drive. type at thye a:>
pqmagic and hit enter,
Bingo, pqmagic starts up, you can then choose to remove the partition and secure
erase it, create a new partition, fat32 if you want to go back to ME/98SE/98 and
then you choose to exit, it will prompt you if you want to make changes. Say yes
and remove floppy from disk drive as the computer starts booting back up. after it
is done, you will have a formatted partition. You then need to reinstall your windows
o.s.
One point to note: If you have multiple partitions already, you can easily set another
primary partition to active, in order to boot up to another o.s. that was already
installed on another partition, and then you can install PQmagic in the windows o.s.
that you boot up to and run it from windows. From there you will be able to remove
the winxp partition, or any other one, resize partitions, or make and format new
partitions.
Pqmagic and system commander(make sure to get the latest version) are both good for
these features and abilities.
Good luck, and Yes Jesus can save your data, media, computer, but most importantly,
you!
Sincerely,
Dave S.
Jesus man

I just did something similiar, and Christopher's post below (dated July 26,2002)
helped alot. I did it manually by editing the boot.ini file and simply deleting
the Windows folder of the version I no longer wanted. Here are more detailed instructions
I just created for my own reference.
1.Make a backup copy and then edit the file boot.ini which is in the root directory
of your boot-up partition, usually drive C.
2.Usually this file is hidden from view. In order to identify the boot.ini file
go to Folder Options, View Tab and select "show hidden files and folders" AND deselect
"Hide protected operating system files..."
3.Here is a sample boot.ini file:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional Edition"
/fastdetect
It shows two operating systems. If you want to delete the Home Edition, simply delete
that line AND make sure you change the default. The file should then look like this:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional Edition"
/fastdetect
Again, note that the default line points to XP Professional Edition (and has changed
from the previous default).
4.If you are booted on the Windows you want to keep; you can now delete the Windows
folder of the OS you want to remove. And you are done.
5. If you accidentally corrupt or delete the boot.ini file, you can recreate it
by booting from a floppy and then restoring the boot.ini.

one partition already have W 98 SE , i start installing W_XP home from the already
exiciting W-98 when i relalized that i can install XP directly from my floppy using
the new bootable xp 6 floppy disks, i shut down the computer during XP installation
and once stat booting i boot it using the installation XP floopy disks which help
me to get to my CDRom XP Cd and walla fish the installment.
i reinstall my boot magic and set it to XP- 98.
howver once i boot to XP i get that black screen of option to boot to XP and to XP
one of the choices boots well to xp the second option fails giving me the error
of system root missing file ( which is obviosly areminant of my stupid cutting the
early installment from W-98) now how i can delete the second option of uncomplet
XP. please help.

you have to format you hard drive with the windows instalation on. Find you Windows
XP cd stick that in you cd drive and restart you pc. when it says press any key to
boot from CD press a key. There should be some instructions on formating you hard
drive and stuff in the part your looking at then. just follow the instructions on

It's easy, pop the Windows XP CD into your CD Drive when you are in Windows. Then,
click Install Windows XP. When the option comes, choose CLEAN INSTALL from the drop-down
list. The other option will be Upgrade. Do NOT choose Upgrade. Next, follow the instructions
until your computer restarts. When it restarts, you will be in a DOS setup program
for Windows XP. When the Select Partition screen comes up, DELETE THE PARTITION THAT
YOUR OLD WINDOWS XP WAS ON!!!!!!!! Then continue to Install, and you should have
XP back. Remember, all your data will be LOST! Only XP will be on the hard drive
after this procedure is complete. Go to www.windowsreinstall.com for better instructions.

You DO NOT have a "C" drive as far as the Command Line is concerned. You have a
"C:" and the colon IS REQUIRED.

I've had problems trying to remove WinXP, but I've found a pretty easy solution.
Check the maker of your hard drive. Most likely they will have a website with diagnostic
tools that can be loaded onto a floppy disk in case of emergencies. Once you download
the program, just place a disk in your floppy drive and doubleclick the executable
and your floppy disk will be formatted and the files will be loaded. Put the disk
in the drive of the computer you want rid of XP and reboot the system. The program
will boot up and you should find a formatting utility included somewhere within.
I know both Western Digital and Maxtor have these as I have downloaded them. Good
luck and I hope this works for you.

TO ALL PEOPLE THAT HAVE HAD PROBLEMS UNINSTALLING WINDOWS XP!!!!
tried tested and sucess!!
I HAVE SPENT MANY HOURS TRYING METHODS I.E FORMATING VIA DOS OR EVEN COMMAND PROMT
AND ADD/REMOVE PROGRAM WHERE THE PRGRAM IS NOT LOCATED!!!
STEP 1 JUST TRY INSTALLING A LICENSED CD OF WINDOWS XP AND IF THAT WORKS THEN YOU
CAN PROBABLY USE 2 OPERATING SYSTEMS OR GET RID OF ONE I.E.PROFFESIONAL VERSION AFTERWARDS.
THERES SO MUCH NONSENSE ABOUT NTFS AND FAT OR FAT2 SYSTEMS WHERE I CAN UNDERSTAND
THESE JUST CONFUSE PEOPLE AND DON'T HELP WITH GETTING TO THAT ACTUAL POINT ON MICROSOFT
WEBSITES.
STEP 2 CHANGE YOUR SETTINGS TO BOOT FROM CD DRIVE.
-PUT WINDOWS CD IN
-WINDOWS WILL GIVE INSTRUCTIONS ON WHETHER YOU WANT TO PARTITION YOUR DRIVE PLUS
AT THIS TIME YOU CAN ALSO FORMAT YOUR DRIVE AND ERASE PREVIOS OPERATING SYSTEMS ON
YOUR COMPUTER!!
JUST FOLLOW THE GUIDES AND YOUR PREFERRED VERSION OF WINDOWS XP WILL BEGIN INSTALLATION.TAKES
ABOUT 30-40 MINUTES. ANY MORE INFO JUST POP ME A LINE!!!

First, your choice to add this to the end of such a long and old thread is a very,
VERY poor idea.
Second, ONLY if you chose an over the top upgrade of XP onto Win98 and saved the
old OS files is this possible. In the Add/Remove programs functions of Control Panel,
the Windows Setup tab should include the option to Reinstall the prior Windows.
If it does not, then, same as all of the rest in the thread, you are SOL. There
is no "Uninstall".

You need your own question

This is an old, overloaded thread. Create your own and include data about what you
have done up to now, such as "Did you have XP save the Win2000 files?"
.

Uninstall WIN-XP, I simply give the whole shebang the BOOT with an ACRONIS RESCUE
DISC after I save all my files. It fixes a few other problems too, like an EVER-GROWING
Windows program size. (Ever noticed how a new install grows from 3.8Gb to over 15Gb
in only 3-4months?) - (allowing for 3Gig of programs and other files you put in on
top of the OS) You then only have to re-install Windows and your programs. Once you
have a good clean system, use Acronis Disc Image suite, and ghost a copy to a portable
HDD. next time you can format the HDD with a rescue disc, and ghost the OS back into
place. Better still, divide (partition) your HDD if you have space, and put another
OS on the 2nd HDD partition (leave it UNALLOCATED SPACE) such as the Free UBUNTU,
one of the easiest ones to use, a bit like Windows in ease of use. (www.ubuntu.com)

Christianity *is* about treating people right today: "Do to others as you would have
them do to you." and "Love your neighbor as yourself." Please go to a church (I recommend
Baptist or Methodist) and ask the pastor to explain Christianity to you. (Or, read
the New Testament of the Bible.) I ask this not as an insult, but because I would
like you to know the truth about Jesus.
