I followed the advice to the letter...and xp would not permit the drivers to load because "they might create instability...". I've got a SONY PCV-RX550 with built in cd-rw, and I'm getting very fed up with xp promises. I have also downloaded and tried a couple of so called addons such as Ravissent. And Ive tried updateing Roxio 5 Platinum; with with bad results. Does amyone really know how to record mp3 files to cd?

I have found that you must place a CDRW as secondary master

Get ahead's NERO Burning ROM or New Tech Infosystem's CD-Maker 2000 Pro. More options and fewer problems. Period. Then take Micro$haft's XP and put it into the Recycle Bin. This is just another example of Micro$haft's "We'd better get a piece of software onto the operating system so that we can monopolize." If you really want to see Micro$haft's "finest hour", just try to get a copy of Micro$haft "Bob".

Thanks to all who have supplied information! After downloading the Ravissent addon for Windows Media Player, and an update from Roxio, I can now do most of what I want: rip audio CD's to MP3 or WMA, and burn MP3 to CD or WMA to Audio format. I believe that much of my difficulty arose from XP finickyness about ripping and burning unless the ripping/recortding software is very compliant.

>*****************************************I tried everything to write to a CD after installing XP. NTI 2000 and EZ CD Creator 5 platnum with updates, among others, all failed. Then I tried a shareware program called CD Mate. So far this has been the best. CD Mate was downloaded from cdmate.com and installed without any problems, patches or updates. The best part of this is that the license for this program was under $30. So try it for free and if you like it support it by buying the license.

You can get CD mate at www.downloads.com. I ve tried the software for a sony PCV-RX550 desktop with a built in CD-RW and running on XP. No luck!! The suggestions in this discussion are very helpful, please keep them coming. Thank you!

I found a solution to the problem folks. I have a Sony PCV RX 550 with Win XP. First you have to install a patch for the CDRW which is available on the sony website. Link is http://www.ita.sel.sony.com/support/pc/pcvrx550rx560rx570/softupdates/ The name of the file is MSP691XBCF.EXE Under the category "CD-R/RW media recorded with the Windows® XP CD recorder may be missing files or folders, or may be unreadable. " Second step is, after installing the patch, use the CD burning software "NTI CD-Maker Professional Edition 5.1 " available at www.downloads.com. The software is a shareware and works for 30 burns. Its $50 to buy, but worth it since it works. These two steps solved my problem. BTW make sure you uninstall all CD burning software, before you install the patch. Hope this info helps.

I agree, I have had my CD-RW set to Secondary Master since I got Win XP. Also, I
use Roxio EZ CD Creator 5 Platinum with the fix just fine in XP. I can also use
the built in cd burning.

Windows XP Professional
Intel Celeron 667MHZ
256MB SDRAMM
SAMSUNG CD-R/CD-RW SW-208B

You have to be very handy with computer hardware. First go you self a ground-strap and put it on. Second, open the computer case. Third, find your cd-rw. Forth, at the back of the device you will find several sockets. The one with the longest socket (about 10 or 12 double rows of pins) is the one you should use. Fifth, on the top of the cd-rw, there should be a diagram or instructions that shows how to set this device to either master or slave. Follow the instruction. Now, dig out your mother board user manual. Open to the page that instruct you how to install hard-drives and other plug-in devices. There should be instructions telling you what is primary and secondary channel and where to find them. follow the instruction to the last word. However, I seriously doubt that this is necessary. I have a cd-rw connected to the secondary-salve of my IDE-ATA port and it works fine.
