I have a big problem, my burner and my dvd rom drive don't work......I mean they
are in the computer, but it says that is isn't installed....When ever I start up
my computer it detects new hardware, but how can I install new hardware when it asks
me to put in my windows ep cd, but my dvd rom drive isn't installed yet. So it can't
read the cd to install the burner. Someone please help me?

Did you use windows update first?,I encountered this after installing updates. If
not then try installing updates,
also check M.S. hardware compatibility list.

I tried the windows update before and it didn't work I also tried it right now. I
tried installing updates and i brought up 2 updates that I didn't need like "Euro
Conversation Tool" and "Via technologies Inc. sound" It didn't update anything for
my dvd rom nor my burner. Also where is "M.S. hardware compatibility list".
Thank you for responding to my question in the first place.

Do what Jock said. Also, if you bought the computer pre-made, try going to the website
of the company you bought the computer from. Most likely they'll have drivers for
them. If you built the computer yourself, you should know what kind of cd-rom/burner
you have, go to the manufactures site, and download the drivers for them.

unhook the burner from power and ide controller
restart and let system detect dvd if you need to install
drivers for dvd(meaning xp cd doesnt have one for it)
have the driver on a floppy and choose have disk in new hardware wizard and point
it towards floppy drive
then you can rehook up burner and install its driver from the cdrom(if and only if
it is xp compatible )

Take out your HDD, take your cd's over to a friends place. Whack the HDD in his/her
PC copy cds/drivers to the harddrive. 15 minutes work. Not a hard task a little
bit of effort.
Problem occurs usually with kodak and teac scsi drives.
