Windows XP cannot connect to Win ME
Sunday, December 23, 2001 at 10:04 am Posted by John C. Dodds
(6 messages posted)
I have a question about Connect
a Windows XP or 2000 system to a Windows 95, 98, or Me system over a Network:
I have two computers one running Win XP Home and the other running Win ME. The XP
system is the server and has 2 network cards in it. Both computers can access the
internet via ICS. The Win ME computer can access shares on the XP computer but the
XP computer cannot access the ME computer. Has anyone else had this problem? If
so how do I fix it?
Thanks

Since you are not routing them have you tried adding Netbeui to both the XP and WinME
boxes ? The XP version on Netbeui is on the WinXP CD.
VALUEADD - MSFT - NET - NETBEUI.
Otherwise you could also make the server:
192.168.0.1
The ME box 192.168.0.2
with a GATEWAY of 192.168.0.1

The Windows XP machine can see the ME computer but says that it doesn't have proper
permission to connect to it. I have tried setting up users on the ME computer and
it still does not let me connect. I can browse the XP computer and manipulate files
at will from the ME computer but cannot access any shares on the ME computer from
the XP computer. The IP addresses are set up as you suggested already.

I had this XP-ME problem until I cycled thru the Network Setup Wizard a couple of
times on each machine alternately, A-B and then A-B again. I also changed the name
of the workgroup from one name to another and then back, on both units. Don't use
the default MSHOME name. (I installed NETBEUI and then removed it. You don't need
any protocols except TCP/IP.) Also try Start>Run>"COMMAND" (enter) and then at the
DOS prompt type IPCONFIG to give local stats and then NET VIEW to see if the XP unit
sees the ME, and then PING (name of the ME unit, as seen in net view) to see what
the XP thinks the ME's parameters are. These should get you on the road. --Are you
using a firewall? If so, then turn it off when troubleshooting.

I did it!!!! Thank you so much! I have tried everything to connect my XP to hubby's
ME with NO luck at all untill I came across this forum in search of a 'way' to connect.
He could see my computer and go through my files but I could not see his puter at
all.
After reading this post below, I uninstalled all of what was in my Network adapters
except TCP/IP. Ran the Network Wizard, (which said it could not complete the connection)
but I restarted my puter anyway, looked for hubby's puter in the neighborhood and
found it!!!!! Of course I had to use the 'search' for other computers but it showed
up!
I'm so grateful to those of you who take the time to help those of us who try very
hard to figure things out on our own but just cannot find the way...
Thanks again and have a great year!

I have a similar problem, but a bit different. I have new XP machine attaching to
a network of Win98/ME machines. I have a printer hooked up to a Win98 machine.
The XP machine can see the printer, and select it as default, but gives an error
when I try to print. Because the printer on the Win98 machine requires a password,
this doesn't surprise me, but the WinXP machine doesn't give me an opportunity to
type one in. When I remove the password protection from the Win98 machine's printer,
the WinXP machine can print to the printer. From WinXP, I can access shared folders
on Win98 machines, and it prompts me for the password. Is this a bug in XP, or is
there a way to type in the password on the XP machine for a printer (attached to
the 98 machine) in order to access it?

We are having the exact same problem that you have. By using the credential manager
at the DOS prompt, we have been able to login with the printer password; however
once the logon session is over, the dos string must be input again (net use \\servername\printername
/savecred--it will ask you if you want to logon as guest, just press enter and then
put in the password).
Have you ever found a permanent solution to your problem? We would be very interested
in a solution.

Sounds like you have a firewall setup on you connection by default. Right click on
Local Area Network connection and go to advanced. If the Firewall is enabled, disable
it. Let me know

Try installing "Client Service for Netware" or "Client for Microsoft Networks" (go
to Control Panel, double click network (or whatever), and right click the "Local
Area Connection).
This solved my problem.

Make sure you have added netbeui protocol under control panel/network as this is
needed for the 2 pc's to communicate. After reboot do the search on your ME pc for
your xp pc and then follow the mapping procedure.
Good luck

Win98 PC not recognizing WinXP PC in network
Monday, December 9, 2002 at 5:10 pm Posted by Kausik Datta

I have the opposite problem and hope someone would help. Our lab has two PCs - one
with WinXP Pro and the other with Win98, both belonging to the same workgroup/domain,
both connected to the university network, both able to access the internet. However,
though both has file and printer sharing enabled, the XP PC sees the 98 PC in the
Network neighborhood and can send or get files, but the 98 PC only sees the XP in
the network. If I try to access the XP PC from the 98 one, I get an error message,
unknown error 31. Please help.

Try to enable the guest account on the XP machine and that should work.

Instead of using "net use \\servername\printername /savecred" try this:
"net use \\servername\printername password /persistent:yes"
This should be a permanent solution.

Make sure the win98 machine is using Client for Microsoft Networks and that the user
account you are logging on with is also on the XP machine and also has a password.
Syncronise the password on the XP machine.

NOTE: All network access to a Windows XP Home Edition computer, or to a Windows XP
Professional computer in a workgroup uses the Guest account. Before you continue
troubleshooting, make sure that the Guest account is set up for network access. To
do this:
a.) Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
b.) Type the following command and then press ENTER:
net user guest
c.) If the account is active, a line appears in the output of the command similar
to the following:
Account active Yes
d.) If the account is not active, use the following command to give the Guest account
network access:
net user guest /active:yes
e.) Note that the following text returns after the command:
The command completed successfully.
If you see any other response, make sure that you are logged on as an Administrator,
and then confirm that you typed the command properly before you try again.

You need to goto my network places and run network setup wizzard. after you run it
create a network setup disk. run the disk it makes on any machine that runs win 98
me etc... this will fix the problem. you will need to make the disk from the windows
xp machine.
