Here you go, Uninstall unwanted components Thanx to: Microsoft Expert Zone - Michel Bordeleau It seems that some components in Windows XP can't be uninstalled. Well... they can. Use this trick to uninstall MSN Messenger, Media Player, MSN Explorer and Microsoft Games. First, make a copy of sysoc.inf (found on the hard disk at \winnt\inf\sysoc.inf) before proceeding so that you can restore the initial configuration if necessary. Give the copy a different name, such as sysoc2.inf. Open the Sysoc.inf file. Each line of text in the file represents a component that can be displayed in the Add/Remove Windows Components dialog. Delete the word HIDE for any component that you want to see in the dialog (do not erase the commas). Save the Sysoc.inf file, then close it, and reboot your computer. The Add/Remove Windows Components dialog will now display the items you want.

You need to make sure your system is showing all files:
Control Panel/Folder Options/View/Show Hidden Files And Folders
You'll now be able to find sysoc.inf

Ya, I tried that. I removed the ',hide' as described. But after restarting XP, still I couldn't find the Media Player in the Uninstall Program in Control Panel. And using windows component to uninstall MSN Messenger does not work too.

Yes... Some people write suggestions that they didn't check out. You CANNOT uninstall Windows Media Player this way (or, actually, you can't in any other way but manually deleting files from Safe mode). You CAN uninstall Windows Messenger this way - you've probobly made a mistake when editing "c:\windows\inf\sysoc.inf" file - line that starts with "msmsgs" inside section [Components] must look exactly like this (without quotes): "msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,,7". Save file - you don't have to restart your computer - in Control Panel open "Add or Remove Programs" applet, click on "Add/Remove Windows Components" and the last item in the listbox will be (of cource, if you've done all correctly) "Windows Messenger". Uncheck that item and click Next. That's all.

Agreed, I have found that using the add/remove windows components to remove windows media player beta 9 from an XP set-up will not work. It simply disengages the media player, the program itself remains on your hard drive. If you try to delete the folder, you cant. It will simply return. The only effective way I have found is to boot into safe mode and use a 3rd party software such as "eraser" to get rid it. Go to the url below this message and you will see how embedded beta 9 is into the XP system. Microsft should have provided an uninstall option for this piece of $hit! http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1104-957704.html

you need to go to the tool- folder options menu at the top of explorer, go to view, and set it so you see hidden and system files, and if you can't find it then, search for it and make sure the search is searching for hidden and sys files

Hey, going into safemode allowed me to delete the files in the folder without them coming back, that's great. But now I can't install Mplayer7.1 because somewhere it's recorded that I've got Mplayer9 components installed, I have no idea where this is in the registroy or any files which may contain that information, anyone know? Microsoft's pretty smart, tricking us with Mplayer9 like this. But I'm sure all the kids out there who just play around with programming will be on top of microsoft, they always are. ;o)

I don't know if these tips worked on some computers, but they didn't work on mine. I did everything listed on this page. I erased the word "hide" and removed WM Player from windows xp components. I also used Safe Mode to delete windows media player. Everything deletes, but the folder itself comes back after reboot. Then i downloaded the program ERASER from download.com. It can't delete the folder because theres nothing in it. so i reloaded WM player BETA. i tried ERASER again and it wouldn't work. So i went back to safe mode and deleted WM player again. Now i cant erase ERASER, not even in Safe Mode. Then i went to My Computer - Search and searched for The term WM Player.i deleted everything that showed up. Is there anything else i can do?

My conclusion has been to remove WMP from the Add/Remove Programs menu (I think that requires SP1) and then renaming wmplayer.exe -> wmplayer2.exe in the Program Files -> Windows Media Player directory and renaming mplayer2.exe -> wmplayer.exe... so now I use the old Media Player 6.5 which seems to work 10 times better than WMP9!!

You can do this "swapping .exe files" and it will open the older version of Media Player (maybe 7.1) but MS was smart enough to make sure that none of the files associated with that media player and you get an error. But if you just want to beat the system this will work...

I don't get any errors by swapping the .exe files. All the file types that was formerly associated with WMP 9 is now associated with the older WMP.

I got an invalid file format when trying to play a music file. My problem was that some online streaming sites don't yet support MP9 and it doesn't matter if that is the dominate application my box still tells the browser that MP9 is in charge so it won't let me play the video/audio files.

I had a different experience. I do not have a folder "winnt" in my XP Professional system. I did find the file sysoc.inf in \Windows\inf and I deleted the "hide" in the entry for msmsgs (which I assume is the Windows Mesenger), but it had no results on the Add/Delete list after I rebooted. Also, I did not find an entry for Windows Media Player in sysoc.inf. So, I need some more information. Thanks.

To uninstall WMP9, u must do a system restore. simply turn back time. This is how u remove WMP9, still working on the WMP8 part. Microsoft wants u to understand that if u want to get something away, u have to turn back the time in XP.

I haven't tried this but, you could use your XP installation disk to do a system repair, this means of course, you will have to re-install any 3rd party drivers, updates and service packs...

Ok here's the problem. I am using XP Pro with SP1. I have deleted hide from everything in sysoc.inf and uninstalled messenger via add remove windows components. Reboot PC and....The little spawn of satan is still there. Back to add remove windows components and there is no tick in the box next to the standard messenger icon BUT there is another box with a tick in it underneath it. This is next to a grey diamond icon also named windows messenger. I know just untick this one aswell and be gone evil one. Err...not quite. I cannot untick this second entry or rather I can select it and the disk space goes up or down accordingly but tick is always there. I have selected the lesser disk space so to speak as if I was uninstalling this component; upon reboot the icon still takes up valuable real estate on my task bar. Any priests out there ???????

Tried to do a system restore, but my restore points don't go back far enough (and they're set at max. Also, in my XP Home version sysoc.inf is located at C:\WINDOWS\inf\sysoc.inf. In addition to checking "Show hidden and system files" in Folder Options, I had to uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" just below it to find sysoc.inf -- even in a search. Good luck. As for where to store the copy -- wherever you can find it if you need it! (Think about it.)

IF ALL YOU want to do is get rid of that annoying icon, which is pretty much what everyone wants to do, don't uninstall the impossible. Just open Messenger like you are going to use it, then when it's not looking, sneak into its options and uncheck the 'load on windows startup' checkbox. It wont actually delete the program, but it is small enough to the point where you will not be wasting space, and it will not load in the background, so it wont waste memory either. I still can't uninstall windows media player 8 though. I dont even care about uninstalling, I just wish that when i right click an MP3 it wouldn't give me a bunch of stupid WMP options. Takes up 1/2 my screen.

You cannot uninstall WMP9 from XP without using System Restore. WMP is nothing more special than WMP7 or WMP8, other than surround sound and the new WMA codec support, with the added eye candy and annoyances as usual. Try Zoom Player...it plays everything WMP can...and it's faster than it sounds. Serach for it on google.com.

Yeah it can be done, for all of you who say it can't -- you obviously need to do your homework. wmp.inf - located in \windows\inf =2 key items= First - [WMPUninstKey] is there but has not script actions. Second - Bottom part of the .inf you will find this PROMPT_UNINSTALL_COMPLETE = "Microsoft Windows Media Player uninstall is now complete." CONFIRM_UNINSTALL="Are you sure you wish to uninstall the Microsoft Windows Media Player?" TITLE_UNINSTALL="Microsoft Windows Media Player Uninstall" Plus in the registry you will find this: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaPlayer] "BlockUninstall"="Yes" huh....insteresting isn't it.....if it's impossible to uninstall why would they need to block such an action by a registry key, and what about the other point I brought up? a Prompt to uninstall in the file it's self. Anyone care to help figure this one out?

I found something interesting : win xp has a directory under system32 called dllcache where resides ... tada wmplayer.exe ! When you delete it and run wmplayer from StartMenu>Run the system indicates that some files have been removed and must be reinstalled. Just say no and you're done ! Now when you try to run wmplayer it says : 'windows can't find wmplayer.exe' ...

Additional note : it seems that when you run WinXp SP1 the system tries to maintain the system file integrity through 2 directories: x:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 x:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache (this one is hidden) When you delete files from both dirs Windows File Protection tries to recover them by asking you to insert WinXP SP1-Cd. If you say 'no' then the system stops trying to recover those files. So far on my system, using this tip I have been able to delete all WM8 files from C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player EXCEPT mplayer2.exe which I use extensively. Best of luck to you all ;-)

Uninstall Windows Media Player 9 Series
Tuesday, June 3, 2003 at 2:06 pm
Posted by Rich (1 messages posted)

Starting clean and fresh, this should work completely under certain circumstances. I'm sure a lot of us don't have these circumstances going for us, but it does in fact work. 1.) The only way to remove Windows Media Player 9 Series without hacking your registry to pieces is to simply uninstall it using the "Restore Computer" Wizard. (That's the program that suposedly brings your computer back to a certain date)This will bring you back to Windows Media Player 8 Series. 2.) From there, open up an Explorer window and then go to Folder Options. Be sure that you can see your hidden files and system files. 3.) Navigate to your system directory (typically C:\Windows or C:\WINNT) or type in %Systemroot%\inf 4.) Find the sysoc.inf File and open it. There are several threads of information all containing the word "HIDE" which hide them from the components listing for Window. Remove all of the "Hide" words but don't remove the commas. 5.) Restart Windows XP and then go to your Add/Remove Programs in the control Panel. Scroll down 'til you see Windows Media Player. You'll see the icon that's typically displayed along with another icon which is the actual program. Uncheck it and then press "Apply" You should be set, if you have any questions E-mail me at SpartagusII@earthlink.net

YEAH!! I was starting to think it was completely impossibile to remove WMP v9. Makes me wonder why M$ never mentions this. I had to delete the shortcut that pointed to the late WMP v9. Found a link in (All Progs>Accessories>Entertainment>Win Media Player) that points to v6.4.09.1125. It works fine. I didn't have System Restore on so I thought I was out of luck. It will teach me to look at the end of long threads before I read 'em from the top. I was getting depressed and then I tried the rundll Yeah! BTW, What prompted all this? I just wanted to clean up my Right Click Context Menus for .mp3 files. I started with WinAmp and managed to do clear them from inside the registry. No luck with the items related to WMP though. This uninstall left my context menu completely clean. THANK YOU

In response to all of these threads:

The stock Windows Media Player in XP (WMP8) cannot be uninstalled. It is integrated
to the system, which I assume the first person posting was trying to do. But there
is a way around this.

First of all, if you would prefer to just use the classic windows media player 6.4,
it is already installed in Windows XP along with WMP8. You can simply open the WMP8
options and uncheck all the associations with media files. Then after closing it,
you can open 6.4 and recheck which file associations you would like to use in it.
All icons double-clicked will open in 6.4 and you have to worry about 8 again unless
you manually open WMP8, in which case it will automatically reassociate the extentions
again. Otherwise, all you have to deal with are quite a few other WMP XP integrations
that you cannot get rid of.

If you would like to get rid of it completely, in association to the other threads
about WMP9, you can download and install WMP9 for Windows XP, then after restarting,
you can use the command previously posted:

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %SystemRoot%\inf\wmp.inf,Uninstall

Make sure you associate the extensions first to let windows determine the default
media player as 6.4. Then when the uninstall takes place, it will rollback to 6.4
instead of 8, and both 8 and 9 will dissappear. WMP 6.4 becomes the default XP media
player.

Thanks to all others who posted, especially the uninstall string from Microsoft Support,
for helping everyone out with this.

Windows 2000 is 50% faster than Windows XP. I ran benchmarks to prove it when I 'downgraded' and I was shocked. 15MB/sec disk access in XP jumped to 22MB/sec in 2000, and my video card benches jumped by astonishing rates (far beyond 50%). Everyone, go get Windows 2000 and start fresh; XP is designed to eat resources so that you'll be forced to upgrade your older computers if you want XP. The best part is that 2000 comes with WMP 6.4. WMP 7/8/9 are not even linked in. :)

On the other hand, Bill Gates is my role model.

Try going to http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/9series/player.aspx
and downloading the media player 9 install file. After you got that, install that,
then reboot your system.

After your back in your wunderful world of windows run that same command again.

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %SystemRoot%\inf\wmp.inf,Uninstall

That should do it. If it doesn't then the problem lies deeper and who knows, it could
just be a poltergeist toying with you. If you really want to throw some holy water
at it you could whip out your trusty you know what... NO, not your bible, your windows
xp setup cd, and reinstall windows. That all depends on how much you hate your media
demon player.

As for going back to win2k, I wouldn't suggest that. I always just make my XP look
like 2k by getting rid of all the ugly blue BS. (And
a bunch of other tweaks, most of them I've written about on my website.)

i'll try to help where i can... if you can not find the "inf"folder you may need to enable explorer to view hidden files and folders. also, if you are on xp you do not have a "winnt" folder, the "inf" folder lies withing windows, it looks like: C:/windows/inf/sysoc.inf now, the problem with all that is it is irrelevant in that you cannot remove WMP from your computer using the uninstall programs stuff... my suggestion is to keep on the lookout for a better wmp to be released, or for MS to relese an uninstaller. untill then, user winamp for your audio, VLC media Player or Power DVD for your movies. or just do config mplayer2 for your video... that works for me :)

Hi, I've been reading this thread and conclude that I can't uninstall Windows Media Player. I can live with this but what is annoying me is that last week Windows Media Player 9 now all of a sudden starts up everytime I turn my computer on. It doesn't just put a little icon on the menu bar; the whole program is open on my screen. As far as I am aware no one here downloaded version 9 so I don't know why this is suddenly happening! In fact we don't even use Windows Media Player as we use Music Matchbox. The only way I can figure out for WMP not to start up is to go into msconfig and take the check out of the box on the startup tab. But then everytime I turn my computer on I get a message that I have a custom configuration and it takes me to msconfig. geesh... Is there a way to have WPM sit quiety on my computer and not start up when the computer is turned on?

I have two questions on your advice. First, do you have to use the "System Restore" program before hand? When I ran it, it took out my background, personalization, and deleted all of my bookmarks... Also, should you get a prompt when you run that command? I did not. Thanks

Messenger is also activated in MS Office. So even if you uninstall it in Add/Remove Programs, you still have to deactivate it in Outlook. What you must do in Outlook is go to Tools\Options\Other and remove the check from the check boxes next to the Messenger Icon.

There is a relly easy way to do this. Go to start, control panel, add/remove programs and at the top, click show updates. Scroll down to the bottom of the list and click on Windows Media Player 10 Beta. Click Change/remove and follow the steps. then after it is complete, restart your pc and it will be back to Windows Media Player 9 version.

I've done everything you said but at the end when i type the "RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %SystemRoot%\inf\wmp.inf,Uninstall" in run, i get "you are aboyt to rollback windows media player 9 series to the original version of windows media player that was part of your version of windows. Do you want to continue" Isn't it supposed to say "Do you really want to uninstall windows XP wmp9?" I just want my wmp removed ! thx :>

The only way I could get WMP 10.0 beta removed was to use RegSeeker (http://www.webattack.com/get/regseeker.shtml). From the main menu of RegSeeker select "Installed applications". Scroll down to "Windows Media Player 10" and select delete. This WILL remove it. If you then want to install version 9.0, go for it. It WORKS!

I downloaded/installed Windows XP SP2 last wk. My PC doesn't have WMP, but another one does. I deleted client id entries from HKey_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayr\Player\settings & HKey_Uers\.default\software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Player\settings. I added "=off" to [Optional Components] section in c:\windows\inf\wmpocm.inf and wmaccess.inf. I removed the "hide" from the c:\windows\inf\sysoc.inf. However, when I goto c:\program files\windows media player to delete files, the executables and dll's duplicate themselves and reappear. I even tried with DOS commands del and erase with -f option. I did find c:\windows\inf\mplayer2.inf that shows the following section: [WMPDelay.Actions] HKLM,"Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer","BlockUninstall",,"yes" If I remove the "BlockUninstall", will I be able to delete Windows Media Player folder and files? What does the "yes" mean? TYIA. RAS

After searching the web all over the place for this, was trying to undo a screwed
up install of wmp10 that refused to let me rollback or uninstall, I was able to rollback
to windows media player 9 with ccleaner, like someone upthread suggested.

Download and install ccleaner from http://www.ccleaner.com

Restart in safe mode.

After installing ccleaner, do a search for "wmp" in C:\Windows, make sure "search
hidden files and folders" is checked in "more advanced options".

Right click and "erase" the files wmp.dll, wmp.ocx, wmpasf.dll, wmpcd.dll, wmpcore.dll,
wmpdxm.dll, wmploc.dll, wmpshell.dll, wmpui.dll. You will get Windows file warnings,
just click cancel and yes each time. 2 of these files may not delete and that's fine.

Go to C:\Program Files and delete the windows media player folder.

Now try installing the older version of windows.

This will not uninstall windows media player 10 but it will let you install an older
version of windows media player.

Windows Media Player 10
If you have installed Windows Media Player 10, you can roll back to the version of
the Player that was on your computer before installing Windows Media Player 10.

To roll back from Windows Media Player 10 to a previous version, do the following:

   1.
In Control Panel (Category View), click Add or Remove Programs.
   2.
Click Remove a program, and then do one of the following:
If you are running Windows XP Service Pack 2, select the Show updates check
box (at the top of the list), click Windows Media Player 10 (in the Windows Updates
section), and then click Change/Remove.
      - or -
If you are running Windows XP Service Pack 1 or earlier, click Windows Media
Player 10, and then click Change/Remove.

- worked for me.

All you've gotta do is go to "Add and remove programs" Check "Show updates" Then Click Change and remove It will rollback. Then remove the WMP Format Runtime. And now you've got your previous WMP version. And just remove that one.

Interesting topic starting in 2002 but this is the problem I have, Every time I try to play a video from the internet on an internet wmp, my internet freezes because of my retarded version of wmp 10, and every time I want to stream a video from the internet to my wmp it starts downloading the video to a temporary folder and I get an error from wmp saying that this file failed to play because it is on another computer, but its not its in th temporary folder and all I wanted it to do was to stream it, but instead it downloaded it. I tried wat u said in the Add/Remove Programs and all of the other things stated here, but when I try to install an older version like wmp 9 or try reinstalling wmp 10, it says that u have a newer version installed on ur computer, but I don't and I already deleted any file associated with wmp and it still says I have a more current version installed, when I don't. Then I used system restore and in the thing that u said in the updates section I don't have a file named WMP 10 to uninstall!! it just says a bunch of security updates for windows XP. All I want is to watch videos online and have them stream properly into my wmp, and thats it, thats the only reason I want to rollback to an older version. If any can please help thank you.

The easy but expensive way: http://www.litepc.com/xplite.html The free way for if you ever plan a clean install: http://www.nliteos.com/ The hard way: switch off windows file protection, delete the WiMP folder, delete the same files from the hidden folder \windows\system32\dllcache (or just delete every file in the dllcache folder), ignore the warnings that XP pops up, and run a registry cleaner to remove the dead references to the files you deleted.

I've read this entire thread and did not find my problem. My WMP keeps jumping while downloading video and audio from the web. Sort of like buffering but I have a cable modem, 1gb ram, and the XP desktop has 60gb free on the drive. it stutters so fast I cannot even close out the program before it starts again.

Wow, this thread has stayed alive for a long time. I'm not sure if people are still looking for answers to get rid of WMP 11. I, in my utter frustration to remove this must've done something right. You could follow the steps below at your own risk to remove windows media player 11 and reinstall version 9. Please read ALL steps below first before you attempt anything! I provide no guarantees if something goes wrong at your end:
1) If you choose to install an older version of WMP, download a copy of the installer to a key.
2) Install ccleaner on your computer (please google for it if you can't find it). If you're unable to find/install ccleaner please do not continue any further.
3) Restart your computer in safe mode.
4) Dump the contents of %windir%\system32\dllcache into a seperate folder (preferably NOT inside the dllcache folder; I created a system32\dllcache.old folder). I'm not sure if this step is needed but it hasn't harmed me in anyway. I restored the contents when I was done and everything went well.
5) Using Windows Explorer, find all files in your hard drive that begin with "wmp*" (minus the quotes). Delete all the files after making sure they don't belong to any other 3rd part application (You could move these files into a seperate folder if you're worried about a system crash). All the files I found were under "Windows" and "Program Files\Windows media player" folders.
6) Delete all files from \Program Files\Windows Media Player.
7) Run CCleaner and fix your registry (please make a backup when CCleaner asks you to!).
8) Restart your computer in safe mode.
9) Run the installer (from step 1) of the older WMP. I did see it mention a screen that had a caption of WMP 11 but it didn't really affect the installation process.
10) Restart computer in normal mode and voila! you should have your old version of WMP back.
11) If you wish to restore your copy of dllcache, you will have to restart in safe mode and transfer the files over to the original folder.
If you're too worried about bricking your system, please do not try this. I will not be able to support any of the issues you might run into.
G'luck!
