I upgraded my WIN 98SE to XP Pro and cannot get sound from my Soundblaster Live! 5.1 sound card. I went to the creative web site and installed the latest drivers, but still no sound. I also went through the Windows troubleshooting wizard, but no joy. Any suggestions?? Thanks in advance,

Hi, Open all volume controls, Click the advanced button (you may have to check the advanced option under "Options" if it's not there). Place a check in "digital outpit only".

With your SBL 5.1, you will have AudioHQ. Open AHQ; then, open "Speaker". In the upper left-hand corner of the window, your should see "Digital output only". Make sure ther is an "x" in the checkbox. Also, assure that you have chosen 5.1 Speakers, as your speaker type. My card works perfectly with XP. Good luck!

actually you only want to have that enabled if you have digital speakers that use spdif output if you have speakers with a regular plug then please make sure that that is unchecked since you will get no sound if its set to digital output only and you have analog speakers

bells,

it sounds like a problem I've had in upgrading the systems I've used. It sounds
almost like XP is still trying to use your Win98SE drivers for your SB Live. There
are a couple ways of remedying this, but sometimes it can be a real mess and a real
pain.

1. First, go to your Device Manager.
2. Go to Sound, Video, and Game Controllers
3. Find "Creative SB Live (WDM)" If you can't find it, then most likely XP IS using
your 98SE drivers for XP.
4. You can either uninstall the device via software (click the uninstall button),
or you can try to manually force XP to use the new drivers.
5. To manually force the drivers, double click on Creative SB Live.
6. Click on the Driver tab
7. Click Update Driver
8. Click the radio button next to "Install from a list or a specific location (Advanced"
9. Click Next
10. Click the Radio Button next to "Don't Search......."
11. Click Next
12. Look for the Creative SB Live (WDM) (Microsoft) in there that has a little gray
3d box with a green checkmark in it. This is a WHQL certified driver that is XP
Compatible. Select the one by Microsoft, and click Next.

That will force XP to start using that driver, instead of any other driver. Hope
this helps!

Derek

Your problem is not uncommon. Creative Sound Blaster cards need IRQ 15. there is a problem however in that Windows XP & XP Professional has HAL (Hard Ware Adaptive Layer) which takes over the BIOS. HAL then dynamically assigns IRQ's which cannot be changed or redirected with out a third partys HAL. The upgraded drivers cannot correct this problem. I have had other problems with My Audigy Platinum. Creative did not upgrade any thing except some dirvers and the majority of their software was not upgraded to compatiability with XP. If your surround card supports Dolby 5.1 surround you might try a DVD setup / diagnostic / calabration disk to see if your card actually does decode Dolby. In my instance I have tried 3 different ones and 3 different DVD software decoders that are supposed to decode 5.1. They have all failed or the Blaster card has failed. They tried to tell me to enable EAX so that I could get surround but this is not correct as EAX does not have any thing to do with Dolby. In Addition the EAX console pops up in Windows XP Professional and takes over the screen and there is no minimize or exit buttons. This requires a ctl+alt+del to shut it down. If you have any of these and I have over 3 pages of problems that I have reported, then it's probably just Creative not doing you any favors. Don

I have had problems with computer freezes ever since I installed a soundblaster live card when I built my computer. It usually happens during a 3D game and I wish I knew why. I have also had repeated problems with the sound becoming "unsynchronized" from the video while watching or recording a movie. I was convinced that it wasn't the sound card and have always been lead to believe that it was the video card. All for nothing. I have gone through Nvidia, Matrox, and now ATI video cards and Windows ME, 2K pro and now XP pro in the same computer to try to fix the problem. The new ATI software has a system test that said the audio card frequency was not within 2% stability and that it would cause problems with playback. I pulled the audio card and installed the jumper for the motherboard's audio and ALL my problems went away. After a year and a half of troubleshooting it was the audio card. Through all of this I have had no help from Creative Labs at all. They seem to think the problem is elsewhere. I wish someone would come up with a better solution but this works for me. Sound Blaster cards seem to have a lot of resource and bug issues that the company won't deal with and they only get worse with XP even with the newest drivers. R.C.

well, i had win98se running on my system and i did a complete format and installed xp pro. Now i have "no soundcard installed on my system. Its not even recognising that i have a sound blaster card. I have tried to install it 3 times but it apparently doesn't exist...how do i fix this without buying new software?? i tried going to the soundblaster website to get new drivers and the like but they tell me (probably based on my system) that i don't have it either. I never removed my soundcard lol as far as i know its still there. So i can't access audio hq even because i have "no soundcard"

Hi all...I am just looking around for a solution to my problem. I have the soundblaster live 5.1 card. I have a digital coax out to my Onkyo reciever. When I do the speaker test with the digital out box checked all I get are front left and front right sound. I have tried everything and am hoping I didn't waste teh money on the card and the cable for nothing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

hey. try going into control panel and then audio hq and then into mixer/surround
mixer and/or speaker (depending on what windows version and soundblaster software
you have installed). from there there somewhere the word speakers should be showing
with a drop down box next to it. in the drop down box select 4 speakers. i believe
that should solve your problem..

This problem below seems to be similar to what I'm experiencing. The sound has cut out a few times since I got my machine, and I've fixed it in the past by physically moving the card to new slot, which seems to sort it. The other night I was trying to install the fated new nVidia gfx drivers, and was given the 'catastrophic error' that I've heard isn't uncommon. So, I re-installed the old drivers. ANYWAY, since then, the sound has gone again. I haven't touched the soundcard settings - they all seem fine - and as far as XP pro is concerned, it's playing like a dream. No conflicts, no dodgy drivers. I've moved the card, I've re-installed the latest set of Creative drivers, and nothing. I'm guessing that this IRQ thing might be the case - I can't see how changing the video driver would affect the sound card otherwise? So, I was wondering if there is any kind of solution to this particualr problem. It would be excellent if I could stop worrying about this thing. Any ideas at all would be good, as I'm close to kicking my PC out of a window, which would land me in the sh*t with my girl.

My problems were solved after pugrading to the SoundBlaster Audigy 2. Their new drivers with disclaimer for support of ribbon cable support of newer DVD, CD and SCS drives corrected all of the problems that I had had in XP and using the ribbon cables on such to transfer the sound to the sound card (As in IDE cables etc.). If you are using DVD player software make sure it supports multiple channels the freebees don't.

After days of trying to get ac-3 s/pdif output from my soundblaster 5.1 card
to my dolby digital receiver via a coaxial cable under windows xp (used to work under
win 98), I ran across a link to this file at http://alive.singnet.com.sg/drivers.
It directed me to creative's asia website (I couldn't find it on the USA site).
The driver patch file is LIVEDRVL2030530.exe. This driver is supposed to provide
functionality of s/pdif passthrough when ac-3 passthrough is selected. I installed
it after installing the sb LiveDrvUni-Pack(eng).exe.
It worked for me, using a standard 2 black ring (stereo) miniplug to RCA coaxial
cable adapter from the rear digital output (orange) of my sound card. Using the
left channel (black) to connect to the RCA digital input on my Yamaha receiver.
It also worked using an RCA coaxial cable from my Live!Drive s/pdif to the digital
input on my receiver.
You must install an AC-3 filter capable of s/pdif passthrough on your system
as I believe PowerDVD and WinDVD do not do this. You can install this using the
Kazaa Lite++ codec pack or download one from Doom9.net (such as ac3filter_0_70b.exe).
Reboot your computer to make sure registry changes are in effect.
Make sure your sblive speaker settings are "5.1 speaker", "digital output only",
and "ac-3 decode" is turned off in settings.
Under audio settings in you DVD software, set sound output to s/pdif. You should
then be able to output undecoded ac-3 signal to be decoded by your Dolby Digital
receiver :-). The speaker test still only plays "right channel, left" channel, but
who cares!

To get ac-3 passthrough to your Dolby Digital receiver from Windows Media Player
(even 9 worked for me), it was necessary to perform an extra step.
These steps are through the courtesy of Doom9's site.
1) Download "graphedit" (available from Doom9) and extract it to your "temp" directory
or whatever directory you choose.
2)Double click the "register.bat" file.
3)Run the "graphedit.exe program.
4)Go to the "file" menu and select "Render Media File"
5)Choose the file you wish to render (I've done ac-3 encoded Divx avi files and
DVD vob files). This will load a graph telling WMP how to process the media file.
6)Go to "Graph" menu, select "Insert Filters", and under "Direct Show Filter's" select
"AC3 filter".
7)Connect the input pin of this filter to the audio stream pin of the "avi (or Mpeg)
splitter filter".
8)Delete the "Default DirectSound Device" filter as that does not provide ac-3 s/pdif
passthrough to your receiver.
9)Go back to the "Graph" menu and under "Audio Renderers" insert "Default Wave Out
Device.
10)Connect the "out" pin from the AC3 filter to the "Audio Input pin" on the "Default
Wave Out Device" filter. (There may be an audio rendering filter depending on the
type of DVD software you have (Intervideo, Cyberlink, Ravisent", etc), which I deleted
without ill-effect (I hope)).
11)Right-click on the AC3 filter, and select filter properties. Set the speakers
to "SPDIF".
12)Go to "File" menu and choose "Save As Graph(.GRF). However change the file extension
to ".avi" and save it to your hard drive. I chose ac-3.avi.
I think you can call the file anything you want as long as when you loaded the media
file you didn't chose "Render URL".
13)Reboot your computer for changes to take effect.
Check Doom9 for additional info on graphedit and ac-3 spdif passthrough.
I take no responsibility whatsoever for anything the software or these techniques
do to your computer or system. As always practice safe computing, and have backups
of your system software and data files. An image of your drive is very helpful in
case you don't like the way things turn out :-(

In my previous post, I meant to say "in the soundblaster speaker settings, set the speakers to 5.1, enable the digital output only box. Then, go to settings and disable the ac3 decode box.

I own a Sb Live! Platinum card and couldn't get ac3 from my live! drive after installing the latest creative drivers. I downloaded the file "LIVEDRVL2030530" which you recommended but it will give me the message "Setup could not detect any Sound blaster live! series on your system" everytime I want to install it. What is that supposed to mean? The card is sitting there in my computer! Any suggestion? Thanks
