My taskbar is no longer the windows xp type but reverted back to windows classic
and I can not get the XP style back. It is no longer an option in my appearance
tab under display properties.

if you don't see it in appearances, have you tried in «Themes»?
kxp.jpg is where you may be able to fix
it at. :)

This happened to me. Go to control panel->display>themes and set the theme to xp.
This fixed it for me.

Hi! Did anyone manage to resolve this issue as I am now having the same problem.
I have windows xp theme installed but when you go into the appearance setting you
can only choose windows classic style for buttons and colours. Really beginning
to bug me now any advise would be most appreciated. Thanks, Karen.

Hi everyone,
If you are still trying to find out you Question, i have an answer.
Firstly look in directory "C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes" then make sure you have these
files called "Luna.*" and "Windows Classic.*" and also a (folder) called "Luna" which
comes with the "Luna.*" file.
If you dont have these files please E-Mail me at snoop_dogg_6@msn.com and say "I
need these files", then i will send a *.zip file with all the file you need in there.
Note: If you get the *.zip file it will be made up to extract it self, but make sure
it is going to be going in the right directory incase it is not the right directory
or is not there at all.
The directory you will be looking for is "C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes"
Note: The example above is for Windows XP...

Try the opposite of this hint below :-
[Start] [Run] [Regedit]
Registry Key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
Modify/Create the Value Name according to the Value Data listed below.
Data Type: REG_DWORD [Dword Value] // Value Name: NoSimpleStartMenu
Value Data: [0 = Default / 1 = Force Classic Start Menu]
Exit Registry and Reboot

the fix that worked for me was to go into Computer Manager (right-click my computer,
manage)
under Services, set the Theme service to start automatically, and restart.

I tried all of these and nothing worked but eventually I realised that placing a
copy of uxtheme.dll in c:\windows\ was the problem. I had placed it there so I could
copy it over the existing version in c:\windows\system32\. When I attempted to delete
the file in c:\windows\ it would not let me because it had been loaded into memory.
This was probably causing a conflict somewhere. It seems unlikely that any of you
have done this but if you have then this fixed it for me. However do not go around
deleting every other copy of uxtheme.dll in windows subdirectories as many of them
are necessary. Only delete c:\windows\uxtheme.dll.

I had the same problem and resolved it by doing the following:
1St) In file explorer, Tools, Folder Options check to make sure of the following:
a) Check the check box for "Show hidden Files".
b) Uncheck both checkboxes for: Hide Extensions of Known file types and Hide protected
operating system files.
This will ensure that you will be able to find the file outlined below however, be
sure to recheck these boxes afterwards to
protect them.
2) Go to C:\Windows\Resources\Themes and locate a file: "Luna.theme" and double click
on it.
The appearance screen will come up showing "Windows XP Style". Click on apply.
Note: I also created a short cut to this file on my desktop just incase this happens
again.
I do not know what caused the problem to begin with however, this did fix the problem
for me.

I am having a similiar problem to the one described here, but I haven't been able
to fix it yet by any of the methods suggested. The strangest part is, the problem
keeps coming and going - it's happened four times now.
On the "Appearance" tab, under "Windows and buttons", for some reason only "Windows
Classic style" is listed - I normally use "Windows XP style". "Windows XP" *is* listed
under themes, but selecting and applying it still does not use the new style windows
and buttons.
The Themes service is set to "Automatic", and I have all the required files in "C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes".
I have also tried re-installing these files.
The problem occured earlier today, but has now gone away, again. Restarting does
not fix the problem, the Windows XP style just seems to come back into the list randomly.
I checked an hour ago and it wasn't there. I checked ten minutes ago, without having
restarted or even used the PC in the mean time, and it was back.
If anyone has any idea what may be causing this please let me know. Thanks!

It comes and goes for me too. Whenever a windows update happens, it always reverts
back to classic, and I can't choose xp. The choice is not there. After a few days,
it mysteriously reappears. Rebooting doesn't seem to help. And sometimes, one or
two users will be able to pick it, but others not (we have home, and four users,
and sometimes limited users can choose xp, and admistrators can't. bizarre.)
I've given up. The next time it happens to me, I'm going to call them up. Apparently
you get two free support calls, and I've never used any, ever. So I figure, what
the heck...

For me Luna.theme was not enough. The real button and task bar information is in
"luna.msstyles" file. Somehow that file was dissappeared from my computer. But as
soon as I copied it back to the "...\themes\luna" folder the XP style option was
available again.

Ok, For those of you who have tried all of these fixes, here's the one that worked
for me. More than likely your c:\Windows\Resources\Themes\Luna\luna.msstyles files
has been corrupted. In order to fix this you will need your Windows XP Install CD.
Make a new folder in the root of your c: drive (ex. c:\temp). This is where we are
going to extract a good luna.msstyles file. Put in your XP Install CD. If it autoruns
just close it. Go to a command prompt. (ex. Start, Run, Type command, and hit enter.)
You should now see something like this C:\DOCUME~1\youruser>. Type in the name of
the CD Drive you put the disk in followed by a colon (ex. D:). Now for the fun part.
Type in cd i386. Now type in expand luna.ms_ c:\temp. You should now have expanded
the file into your temp folder. Type exit to close the command prompt. Go to your
temp folder and rename luna.ms_ to luna.msstyles. Double click on it to set your
appearance to XP to see if it works. If it does copy the file to your c:\windows\resources\themes\luna
folder.

I have had this only on one of the three windows XP (pro) installations I use.
I found the simplest and most "eejut-proof" way is to keep a backup of the "themes"
folder somewhere handy and just copy back the themes folder into resources/themes.
Its only 4mb.
Tip: if you have "lost" the original themes folder, and restore is enabled, just
restore to a point where it was all working and copy the themes from there. It works.
Just slap it on your desktop and it will still be there when you undo the restore
back to the latest.
I usually leave restore enabled for a week or two after a fresh install, just in
case.
Be very grateful if anyone could tell us what is actually going wrong here! this
has happened on three different hard drives now, after full format and clean installs.

seems like the only fix is replacing the 'luna' files in windows. I got the luna
files from my brothers computer and it worked but now i have another problem. In
user accounts, I had the 'welcome' screen enabled and whenever i restarted/shutdown
my computer before, it would say "windows is logging off" or something like that
in a little animation like the 'welcome screen'. Now it does it in a window (the
way it looks if you have the 'welcome' screen disabled) so that file is messed up
now too but i dont know what file it is so i cant replace it. Can anyone help me?

For me, the problem is that it won't let me load a theme because my "theme service
is not running." Well, I've done everything I know to do to make sure that it is.
It says that it is running, and it is set to automatic. I've stopped it, started
it, restarted it ... It seems like an error that I just don't have the brains to
fix.

Yea, I had the same problem and solved it a lot easier than messing with all that
registry crap! It all starts with changing a setting or installing a program and
then restarting your computer. You don't relize it has changed untill you reboot.
I thought about it for a little bit and then remembered that I set a minimum font
size in my web browser. Sure enough I changed it back and restarted my comp. and
I was able to select windows XP in my appearance. Your web settings have a profound
effect on everything else in a windows OS.
Enjoy,

Followed the steps exactly and it's sorted :)

The problem I'm having is similar but when I select the Windows XP theme the screen
goes to black and white (which is normal) then it becomes frozen. When I try to
call up Task Manager (Cntrl Alt Del) that pops up, I select Task Manager, then the
window disappears - the system remaining frozen. I can only force a reboot at this
point.
I thought it may be a virus or adware - my AV program, Panda, protection level only
goes to Low now. So I ran Spybot and it found a bunch of gunk which is no more;
rebooted and still can't get Windows XP theme going.
Also, I tried all of that luna stuff, up and down and all I got out of that was it
trying to change the desktop theme to Windows XP where it did it's thing and freeze
on me.

I solved my problem by uninstalling SP 2. After that everything came back and my

We had the same problem with the Xp themes after installing Xp2, not letting us use
the luna theme, and locking up when changing themes. We turned off zonealarm and voila-Luna
theme is back!
If you have Zonealarm turn it off and try changing your themes. Then uninstall zonealarm
and get their latest update(you may want to delete all ZoneLabs and zonealarm folders
first so you have a clean zonealarm install). And like stated above, make sure you
have a good copy of the luna theme.

Missing a taskbar theme and tried the above?
Thursday, April 14, 2005 at 7:13 pm Posted by 8Ball

I can honestly say, I had tried all the suggestions mentioned on this page. However
most are pretty simply.
1. Check the themes service is running - right click my pc, manage and click services
and application, then services - scroll to Themes service and check its running.
2. Check themes are installed - open C:\%system_volume%\resources\themes this should
have luna.theme and a Luna folder containing the luna.msstyles and etc... if not,
copy them in.
3. Install SP2 - yes thats right. If you already do have it, reinstall it.
(This should restore and update sytem files, such as uxtheme.dll which may affect
how themes appear on your pc.)
3a. Not tested - but try installing a skinning application, like styleXP or XPSP2
patcher.
{Got a question, you ask the 8 ball}

Folks, the same thing happened to me and here's the fix. I'm sure it will work for
most of you. Follow the following steps:
1) Go to Control Panel - Adminsrative tools - Computer Management
2) Double Click on services and applications
3) Double Click on services
4) Double Click on Themes
5) Click "Start"
Go back to your desktop and look for Windows XP Style under the Appearance tab.
It'll be there.
This should fix mostly everybody's problem unless you have somehow deleted the "Luna.theme"
file from your computer. To check, go to C:\windows\Resources\themes. You should
see both a Luna folder and a Luna.theme here. If you don't that is your problem.
Download these, install them under the director above and then look for the Windows
Xp theme again on your desktop. This should do it.

this happened to me too but when i click in themes and select it is still looks like
the classic and in the appearance tab its just gone! . i tried the themes browse
C:\windows\resources\themes\luna.theme but that just still shows up as classic. and
i also tried the themes service to automatic but it was already set to that! mine
dosent come and go its just gone. no my luna.msstyles did not disapeir its been there
and its the right one. and omg im writing all of this for nothing u see i just fixed
it. omg all of this typing for nothing. o well heres what i did. i went to search/all
files and folders/and typed in "luna.msstyles" (strangly located in "resources/themes/luna"
or "c:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Desktop\Resources\Resources\Themes\Luna"
and double clicked it and that finally loaded it for me to apply. never did it disapear
i just had to double click it. THIS WILL WORK FOR SURE UNLESS U SOMEHOW GOT
THE POWER TO DESTROY THE luna.msstyles file because theres not just one but one in
the unknown recources place and one in each user account i believe and obviously
make sure ur theme service is loaded which only an advanced user would now how to
turn it off

this is the last and final fix from my last post that makes it work for sure
~if u havent already done so, show all files and folders:
Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
uncheck hide extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option. then yes
to confirm
Click apply then OK.
download this file
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/Resources.zip
unzip, and locate the file "luna.msstyle" and copy it to the luna folder located
in
C:\windows\resources\themes\luna
then double click the luna.msstyle from that luna folder
and click apply when the display properties windows pops up and it will be saved
in the appearance tab in the display properties

The problem is with theThemes Service
Saturday, October 22, 2005 at 6:57 am Posted by Jetheat
(2 messages posted)
The main problem lies with the Themes Service.
Although it says that its started and in Automatic mode, it hasn't really. You'll
know this when you click on the Luna file in Windows/Resources/Themes.
When you try to stop this service, it stalls half way and times out. Event 1057.
What is the solution to the root cause of all the problems.

This is the one that works because it uses your install CD to fix what seems to be
a corrupted file in your themes.

Thanks Michael, worked perfect for me (well over 2 1/2 years after you posted this

- non-destructive recovery of the Windows XP operating system as the only solution
available to get back the XP visual style - pretty radical treatment when compared
to just following a few lines of instructions below.

I'm still having problems. I've done everything stated in this post. I have no problems
copying the luna file onto my computer. I go through all of these steps, and when
I double click on the new Luna_mssytle file, it takes me to the apperance tab on
the display. So it appears that everything is okay. The Apply button is grayed out,
so I just hit ok.
It then tells me...
"The visual styles could not be applied. The service did not respond to the start
or control request in a timely fasion"
So I went and checked in the administrative tools. It says that my themes has started
and it automatic...
Basically, I dunno what I'm doing wrong... HELP

A simple solution I found by accident: Go to Start/Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Computer
Management. In left pane, expand Services and Applications, then click on Services.
In the right pane, find Themes and double click on it. Under the General Tab, change
Startup type to Automatic. Below that is Service status. If that is stopped, click
on the Start button, then click Apply, then OK.

This worked great for me--thanks! I noticed that almost everything was disabled
on my Services list. I enabled everything I thought should be, which fixed a couple
of other problems I noticed (like no audio). Does anyone know why everything would
have been disabled? A virus?

You are a star! Great, thanks for the help. I copied the file from a working PC and
it worked first time.

When I started my computer this morning it was on the classic style. I did the control
panel > display> themes to get it back. My question is: Since I have Windows Automatic
Updates DISABLED how did it get changed??? I didn't install any new programs or
anything I can remember yesterday that should have affected the taskbar.
Strange.......

Question about 'My Taskbar is windows classic instead of XP..

All the above problems are still being encountered by myself and has nothing to do
with the luna theme being corrupt whatsoever, the problem seems to have something
to do with the generic host and svchost.exe.
When they become modified or changed by malicious files the registry is modifed by
string options and unless you have backed the registry up you've had it! With me
when the classic themes appears my telephony is stopped as well as the themes, nothing
can switch it back on.
I even tried sfc /scannow from 'start' and 'run' with the OS disk in which should
restore all the system32 folder files to their original state without any luck. One
other thing when you want to patch the resources tree, you have to do this in safe
mode as otherwise the files return to their unaltered state.
If I find a permanent fix for this, I'll post back with it.

I have eventually found a permanent fix for the themes/sound/dial-up, at least it
worked for me.
Some folk might not have configured their malware program correctly mine (AVG anti-spyware)
was switching off administrative tools/services virtually everytime I re-booted the
machine, so I removed the program completely and this has restored everything back
to normality.

More seriously, you are an idiot to post your mail address on a public forum.

He is probably not trying to be cool however he may appear to those of his generation.
He may not have the education that some of us privileged here.
He does have a problem with his machine however, and that is why he came here, for
our help.
If he was a fool, he should still be heard without condemnation.
