I was having the same problem installing Windows XP on a P2 300MHZ 96MB RAM. The
solution:
The problem is an outdated BIOS, obtain an update from the vendor or...
When installing Windows XP, At the beginning Blue screen which says: Press F6 to
install thrid party SCSI or Raid (something to that extent)
Once you see that remark in the bottom, immediately hit F7. Worked beautifully!!
Let me know if this works, curious, it worked on mine.

this could also be caused by a bad stick of ram in your pc. i was getting the same
error and found a thread elsewhere saying bad ram could cause it. i traded sticks
of ram and my errors all went away.

I saw the same error along with many other errors during installation. I bought
new ram and that didn't solve the problem. I finally found a suggestion on a message
board somewhere to take out my Nvidia GeForce 200 video card and replace it with
a different type. I found an old Creative Labs 3d card and popped it in. It immediately
installed XP Pro without a glitch. After everything was up and running I replaced
the video card with the GeForce. I don't know what the problem is with that card
during the installation but it gives multiple blue screen errors that lead you to
think the ram is bad. I sweated for over 10 hours until I tried this. I'll be keeping
that old card around until I finally replace the GeForce. Good Luck.

Try setting the bios to failsafe values - I can only install WinXP on my S/Micro
P6dbe this way. I think ACPI is duff.

Definitely RAM. I just installed a P4 2.0A in a Gigabyte GA-8IRXP motherboard.
Kept getting the error with XP. Tried Win2k, Win98se, etc...nothing. Pulled a stick
of RAM - and whamo - worked like a champ.

I was having the same problem on a Dell Inspiron 5000e. There were no updated drivers,
so I checked the ram. Well, this machine was just serviced by Dell and they did not
seat the ram properly. I reseated the ram and away it went!!!

It's definatley memory. Pulled out my Kingston stick and it worked like a champ.
The stick is good according to the DIMM tester, must not be referencing a portion
properly, so I'm gonna stick it back in after the installation.

i was having this problem on a hp omnibook 900b...microsoft reckon it's to do with
faulty hardware. i took all the peripheral devices off (usb stuff, pcmcia network
card, managed battery, etc.) and still had the error. read this thread, whacked the
128mb ram expansion stick out and it worked a treat. thanks guys

The most possible reason is the memory. I encounter kinds of problems during installation,
and including error code 4, error code 7, BIOS need update, MB is not ACPI compitable,
and so on. Finally, I reseat the memory, everything is ok.
So, try this first.

error code 4 is defintively ram related. doesn't mean that ram is broken (it may
or may not work on another mainboard and it even may work from time to time on the
mainboard where error code 4 was shown), but finally it's unable to communicate relieably
with the specific mainboard. before you vaste time and try anything else: CHANGE
ram and you'll see your machine running again.
have a good one

Cleaned gold on RAM with a pink pearl eraser. Put 2nd DIMM in 1st slot and left the
2nd out. Hit F7.
Something worked!
