Question about 'Connect to a Windows XP or 2000 system with a Windows 95, 98, or Me system over a Network'

I have a question about Connect
to a Windows XP or 2000 system with a Windows 95, 98, or Me system over a Network: I
posted this message once before and it obviously did not take….
I am attempting to set up a simple two computer system…my new computer is a Dell
4300 1.6 gig machine…128 meg of ram…it is running WinXP and came with a C-Net Pro200LW
10/100 Ethernet card…installed.
My older set is 133mhz with 64 Meg of ram…running Win 95a . It had no Ethernet
card but I purchased a Linksys. LNE100TX 10/100 Ethernet card…
I originally tried to use a crossover cable …but found out the Pro200lw would not
support it
So I purchased two regular high grade patch cables for 100 mhz operation and a
Linksys..EZXS55W Wokgroup switch. 10/100 .and hooked it up it does not work….
Here are my two questions
1. Has anyone successful linked a WinXP and a Win95a?….
2. What does the sentence in your article mean when it says “(Note that some early
versions of Windows 95 might be a little flaky here).”
To help answer those questions.. here is what it does do and what it probably is
not from:
All lights..on both computers and those on the switch are lit…indicating proper hook
up and all units working at 100 mhz…..selective individual lights on both computers
and switch blink occasionally when attempting connection
There is NO firewall activated on the local LAN
Both computers have single names, one 5 diget….one 8 digit
The Local LAN workgroup name is the same on both…. MYHOME
Both machines have the same components….
Client for Microsoft Networks
File and printer sharing
TCP/IP
Their respective LAN card
The names are exactly the same as are the passwords….I am the administrator
The I.P. addresses are assigned by me…192.168.0.1 and .2 submask 255.255.255.0
All components seem to have bindings…
There are designated test shared folders on each computer
The Pro200lw passes all card test which are on the Win XP computer ..Only one not
complete is “cannot establish synchronization”... this is not a surprise since test
requires two pro200lw’s..which I do not have….
The LNE100TX passes all card tests on the test program supplied with it’s floppy…except…Xmtr
tests normal…but no action on receiver test…..
I can ping each unit to itself….but neither to the other one….basic connectivity
problem?
I tried installing NetBEUI on each in desperation…and was succeesful but no change
and I removed from both …
Netbios is running over TCP/IP in both computers…
I believe ICS is running on WinXP….and I am not sure on the other but I haven’t even
established rudimentary connection yet
The WinXP computer shows up on my monitor on Win.95a.. as well as the resident computer
..including proper names…but clicking other computer icon gives computer message……..[\\Mainhost
not accessible The computer or share name could not be found.Make sure you typed
it correctly and try again ..]
I never typed it in the first place, there is no where to type it.and how
many ways can you spell MAINHOST..it got that off my other computer .
My Dell, while showing the LAN.does not show any screen at all..and all
attempts to find out anything are rebuffed.
Nothing shows up on the WinXP network places on show work groups….cannot or will
not display…but it knows the card identification no of the opposite computer card..
it returns message……. [ Myhome is not accessible .You might not have permission
to use this resource. Contact the Administrator of this server to find out if you
have permission. The list of servers for this network is not currently available...]
Any information shared on opposite computer must have been accessed over network
as their has been no other means of contact….I used Win XP setup wizard to set it
up …but did not (could not) use it on Win95a…..
The status screen for the Lan connection ( on the WinXP shows quite a few packets
sent..and some but FEW returned ….I have no such indicator on Win95a
This is the basic information I have…
Note I removed my modem, and dialup network from Win 95a computer because I intended
to use ICS with WinXP as host ..Was this wise? …. I could see reason to keep it….
I would appreciate any thing you can do and any suggestions you can provide..

Try installing the NETBEUI network driver on the windows xp machine. It should be
on the XP disk.

Hi, not a solution but I suggest that you learn to use some of the network troubleshooting
commands in the DOS window. Go to Start> Run> and with the XP type CMD, or with the
95 type COMMAND, and Enter, and you'll see a DOS window. Some commands to use here
are IPCONFIG, IPCONFIG /ALL, PING (type the other computer's name or IP address after
PING), NET VIEW, and NET VIEW \\(other computer name, as seen in just NET VIEW).
This isn't a comprehensive list of DOS-level commands, nor instructions on how to
use them. It's just a start. By the way, I'm curious why the network wizard wouldn't
run on the 95? I think that might be the real reason you're having trouble. That
wizard sets up some behind-the-scenes steps somehow, such that you can tweak the
visible settings all day long and not get a connection, yet the wizard, when run
on both machines, suddenly fixes it so both machines can see each other just fine.
Put the XP CDROM in the 95 machine and select PERFORM ADDITIONAL TASKS> SET UP A
HOME OR SMALL OFFICE NETWORK. It will transfer a couple of files from the CD to the
95's hard drive, and then give you instructions on what to do next. --One more point,
it's suggested that when you assign fixed IP addresses, you use IP numbers beginning
with 169.x.x.x because 169 is purposely set aside for non-DNS usage. So set the 95
by that standard, and the XP's IP address should be set according to the instructions
of your ISP, if it be automatic via DNS/DHCP, or fixed via an IP address that they
will give you. As long as both machines share the same workgroup name, the exact
IP addresses shouldn't be a primary concern. --As I said, this isn't a complete solution,
but it gives you some more tools. Luck, Tom.

In XP NetBui is not installed properly. You need to remove it from your NETWORK POPERTIES.
Go to the XP CD and drag and drop the NetBui files to the locations specified in
the read me file. restart your PC and install the Netbuie protocol. you may be asked
to reboot again.
Instead of ICS i use WInproxy, this is run as a process and so far, (3months+) have
had no problems
Happy networking Martin

I wish I could..but I have been messing with this for weeks....and nothing changes....I
feel I am almost there but some little thing is wrong....
My problem is that no one answes who actually has a working configuration like mine..
so I have assurance that it works but no one who can say "I did it
In reference to your particular problem when I insert my XP set up disk in the Cd-rom
of the 95a it says.....
"The network set-up wizard is supported only on windows 98,windows 98SE, windows
Millenium edition and windows XP...
Instructions for configuring a network for other operating systems can be found in
the help files in these systems"
NOTE...It did not mention Windows 2000 either
I've followed all of them....and I still cannot get basic connectivity....they will
not even ping each other. but will ping themselves
Like I said the neigh. network screen in the 95a says my other computer is there
but will not access it...the Xp refuses to display anything saying the list of computer
is not currently availible

its extremely strange... on the xp computer i am able to see the name of the other
computer... but if im not "connected" then how in gods name did it find out that
the other computer is called "slave-2k"? i have precisely the same protocols installed
on both machines including netbeui and am able to ping the local machine but attempts
to contact the other fail, even though it may show up in the network window. What
is rather perplexing is the fact that it seems to be one-way... because the computer
running xp can get the name of the 2k box, but not the other way around... i'm stumped.

I believe we have a variation of the same problem....
MY95a knows the xp is there because it deplays an Icon with it's name...and like
you....
there is no where it could have gotten it except across the net work...
I also know the Xp has been in contact with the 95a...because one of the tests for
the Nics in the XP...lists the Nic mac no in the 95a...
and the only place it could have gotten that is over the network..
They each ping themselves and do not ping each other
They both ping 127.0.0.1...what ever that is...
Keep digging...If I solve the problem , I'll tell you....you do the same for me
I am getting frustrated...
Wait a moment.....you saw the name of the other computer on the XP? on what screen....?
what does your screen "my network places" look like?

Networking a win 95 to an XP machine
Monday, February 25, 2002 at 10:05 am Posted by John

I had the same problem initially but now it's solved!
Only proviso to that is that I have a Win95b machine.
Here's how:
Use the IPX/SPX protocol. It's specifically for this use. Disable Netbui. M/S discontinued
it's use for good reason!
The key in doing this is that in the Properties / Advanced tab / Frame Type must
be set to Ethernet 802.3 (I don't know if this is pertinent to the actual network
card, however...) Without this it won't work.
Also initially remove the tick from the TCP/IP check box on the XP machine (you'll
need it later for ICS, but get it out of the way while getting the network to work)
The Win95 to XP connection can still be intermittent, but Disabling and Enabling
the connection on the XP sometimes jump-starts it again, otherwise a re-boot.
Now, I have done file transfers in both directions. Today I even managed to print
directly from the Win95 to the usb connected printer on my XP machine. The wonders
of technology! Thanks, Bill!!
Now to try and make ICS work from the Win95 --- anyone know if it's possible? I'm
not getting any response at the moment.

Well, i dunno if this will help, but, i had also a win XP networked with a win95c
file & pprinter sharing no problem, sadly i wasnt able to get ICS to work either
from the xp dick or PC created floppy for incompatiblility reasone, so i upgraded
the pc wi win 98, now it only sees itself on the network & the XP machine wont even
see itself!!!! but iut knows when other computer is on & of (network cable unpluged")
hmm guess that wont be any herlp at all

Answers to your question.
first: use 192.168.1.* not .0
second, for quick and failproof sharing in your situation, install NetBEUI on both
computers. It works great for older 9x kernals, and I use it all the time when I
dont want to fuss with IPs for a quick connection.

Hi, Looks like I missed the boat on this conversation, but I am having the exact
same problem. I have set up two machines with XP and 2000 and can't for the life
of me get either to communicate through a simple peer2peer network. I have a little
sony laptop with XPPro and an old 450AMDK62 tower running 2000. Both machines have
256MB of ram. The 2000 computer has a Linksys lne100tx adapter and the xp laptop
has an Intel pro/100ve.
This setup is as simple as it gets in networking. I am using 192.168.0.20 and .30
respectively with default mask. Both machines are setup in the LOGOS workgroup with
the following protos and services on each: Network client, file and print sharing
and TCP/ip. I have tried netbeui to no avail, but similarly to your situation I
can see the 2000 machine on the xp computer but can't see the xp on the 2000. However,
it does not matter because the xp computer will not let me access the 2000 computer
if I click it in my network places. Keeps giving me an error. Strangely enough
I can ping local loopback and local ip on each machine but can't ping my neighbor.
I don't understand how that can be since the xp machine sees the 2000 machine.
The linksys card in the 2000 computer is enabled and shows no conflicts, however
it appears to be dead in the water. Under "local area connection status" when you
click on the connection to view properties, there is no activity. 0 packet transfer
either way. I have tried every thing from swapping cards to reistalling drivers
and the operating system, nothing seems to work. I installed xp on another partition
on the 2000 machine and everything worked fine so its not a bad NIC. I have been
to linksys to obtaing the latest drivers and MS Windows update support. I have searched
the web left and right and have wound up here. If anyone has a clue I sure would
appreciate some insight as to what the problem is. Thanx.

I suggest you try another crosslink cable. That ended up being my problem. Aparently
the person I went to didnt wire it correctly so only part of the data was flowing
through the cable... hence the xp computer could see the 2000 computer but not vice
versa. Hope that helps.

Win 95 doesn't support networking in TCP/IP. It has to be Win 98 SE or newer versions
of Windows OS.

To check the correct wiring of your cross-over cable or to make your own, check out
this diagram. Good luck.

This might help... re: Networking a win 95 to an XP machine
Tuesday, October 1, 2002 at 12:48 am Posted by RetroFit

This might help. I have three computers: two xp's and a 95b. I used to have it set
up so that the two xp's could see each other and the 95 and one of the xp's could
see each other. I also had them all using ICS for my dial up(he he, I know).
YES, WIN95 DOES NETWORK WITH XP, WORKS WITH ICS, SHARES FILES AND PRINTERS WITH XP,
AND A BUNCH OF OTHER THINGS... OK...
well, anyway, just thought we would get that out in the open... :)
Now then. Im not saying that this is the ultmate solution, but it worked great in
my situation... sorry this is so late. you all probably have it figured out. anyway.
i had the three mechines hooked up with patch cables to an old linksys hub(nothing
fancy). I used the "network setup wizard" on the two xp mechines and got them working
pretty easy. now, when you use ICS, the internet conection mechine is assigned 192.168.0.1
automaticlly. then other mechines on the network that are setup to use the shared
connection are assigned by that mechine. before we go I notice that someone was saying
to use the xp network wizard on 95 IT DONT WORK PERIOD... so, i fooled around with
my 95 mechine a while and finally got it working. I added the 192.168.0.1 address
as a gateway, and a dns server on the 95 mechine. suddenly. that xp mechine and the
95 were sharing internet, files, and the printer :) it was great... now im trying
to get it all to work with the router and all... all the mechines have internet access,
but the 95 and the xp's dont see each other. the 95 responds to pinging, but the
xp's arent answering the 95's pings... it has to be some kinda security thing...
well, im going to keep trying... hope this helps

I just went through this last night what I did was on the XP machine went to lan
properties/configure/advanced/media type and set this to 10 meg full duplex now I
was able to ping my 95 machine so for stability and piece of mind I also set the
95 machine to 10 meg full duplex also

Believe it or not the solution to your problem from my experience of networking multiple
version of windows is (With Win98 and Win95) you need to go to the START MENU and
select LOG OFF. After that LOG BACK ON. This will establish your connection to
the network. **This will work as long as you have configured all computers to be
on the same WorkGroup. Now as far as being able to connect to your WinXP machine/Win2k
Machine and read files from those machines you need to configure a USER account on
that computer with access to the drives that you would like to be able to access.
Once you try and connect to the XP/2K computer you will be prompted for a User Name
and Password. Just enter the account that you set up and you should be swapping
all the files you want between your Win95/98 computer and your XP/2K system.

I have a new dell with Win XP and an older computer with Win 98SE. Have them linked
through a linksys router and a cable modem. I've got the same problem The new dell
see's the old computer but can't see any files or printers. Old computer can't see
new computer. Ran the Win XP cd to set up both computers for networking but to no
avail. Also have similar configuration at work with a newer laptop with xp and an
older dell with 98SE. Had many problem getting them to network but it just started
working almost by itself and I don't even know what I did. I didn't even use the
WIN XP cd to set those up. I did bring home the laptop and after some time trying
I got it to see the new computer with XP on it and to share with it but couldn't
get it to link to my older computer with 98SE on it. Please help. Thanks, Gene

re: Question about 'Connect to a Windows XP or 2000 system with a Windows 95, 98, or Me system over a Network'

I'm having trouble with networking my two PCs together and with using Internet Connection
Sharing on Windows XP.
Here's the scenario.
Before I got my DSL modem, I used WinXP's networking wizard to network my eMachines
T2042 together with my older eMachines 400i, and that worked fine. I had them connected
directly to each other using the T2042's built-in Realtek-based Ethernet adapter,
a cat5 crossover cable, and a D-Link Ethernet card in the 400i. I was able to see
each computer from the other one, I could share folders and files, and everything
was fine. The T2042 is running WinXP Home and the 400i is running Win98 (not Win98SE).
Then I got the DSL modem, so I set up the T2042 with SBC Yahoo! DSL Internet access
using the built-in Ethernet adapter and external Efficient (I think; I'm writing
this from work) DSL modem. Everything works great, either with SBC's PPPoE software
or with WinXP's PPPoE software. I've tried them both, so I know they both work.
Of course, there's no physical connection between the two computers at this point.
Now I want to set up networking and ICS between the two machines, and I knew that
I'd need two Ethernet adapters in the ICS host machine. I installed the Ethernet
card that came with the DSL modem in the T2042. I didn't need it for DSL since the
T2042 has a built-in Ethernet adapter. When I turn the T2042 on and everything is
running, I get a "TCP/IP Error" message from the SBC Yahoo! DSL Connection Manager
(PPPoE software which is launched from the Startup group), even though it still makes
the DSL connection. This is before I try to set up networking. When I try to use
the Network Connection wizard on the T2042 to set up networking between the two PC's,
it ends with an error message. Looking at the Device Manager under System Properties,
the built-in Ethernet adapter and the newly-installed Ethernet card are both Realtek-based;
in fact, they have the same description except for the #2 after the description of
the card.
I'm new to Windows XP and new to setting up Windows networking (although it worked
fine before I installed DSL and the second Ethernet adapter), and so far, I've done
everything using the wizards.
I'm wondering what the next step should be. To keep costs at a minimum, I want to
keep the setup as it is; that is, directly connecting the two machines with a crossover
cable.
Any suggestions? Step-by-step procedures are always appreciated!
I wouldn't mind using the AnalogX Proxy Server described at sysopt.com, but I'd really
like to know why things aren't working with my current setup.

Okay, so I got it all to work. I installed the Ethernet NIC in a different slot
in the XP machine (and got no TCP Error message for a reason that is unknown to me),
ran the network setup wizard, and checked all of the settings according to directions
I found at homenethelp.com.
I could share files, folders, and the printer between both machines, but still couldn't
access the Internet from the Win98 (client) machine.
So I installed the AnalogX proxy server, from analogx.com, and it worked fine!
Now I just need to secure the proxy server and/or turn the XP machine's Internet
Connection Firewall, and I should be good.

Hey all you other people trying to connect an XP machine to a different OS. I am
having all the same problems with connecting XP to 98. I tried the install disk
for a home network and my 98 machine still isn't being recognized. I have checked
Ip's and workgroups they match and I can finally ping each computer with ip address
and can ping xp from 98 by name but not vice versa. Each computers network group
only displays itself. Anyone have any suggestions?? I was told networking was easy
HA...HA

When your trying to get an XP computer to communicate to a computer with a different
OS, such as 95, 98, or 2000 you have to make sure that you have the same user on
both computers. For example if the User on the XP machine is Administrator, you
have to make sure that you have, and are logged in as Administrator on the other
OS. So with that in mind, as long as the two computers can see each other in network
neighberhood, they should be able to communicate properly. I.E. ICS, File and Print
Sharing, and so on.

I realize that this is coming to you late but here is the simply way to setup a 2
pc network. But it might help some one else.
1. Set the NIC IP address on the gateway to 192.168.0.1. The subnet mask should pop
in as 255.255.255.0. You will need to use ipconfig to find out what DNS servers your
internet connection is using, after finding these numbers add them to the DNS line.
Make sure Client for Microsoft Networks and File and Print sharing are checked (insure
that these two items are not checked on the nic that is suppling the internet connection.
2. On the client, give the nic an address of 192.168.0.2, subnet mask of 255.255.255.0.
The default gateway needs to be 192.168.0.1. DNS will only have one entry of 192.168.01.
On the client set the internet options to 192.168.01 in HTTP only.
3. Keep in mind that you must use a crossover cable for this setup. After you have
the pc's wired just open a command prompt and type "ping 192.168.0.2" on the gateway
and "ping 192.168.0.1" on the client you should get a fast response. Hope this helps.

Mazin -
Did you ever find a solution to this problem? I'm having the exact same problem.
I have a small network set up using 3 PC's. They are all connected via a Linksys
router, so they all have sequential IP's, same subnet and same gateway. They are
also all on the same workgroup. Network file sharing is enabled on all PC's. Two
use XP Pro and can file share perfectly. The third is Win2kPro and sometimes the
XP machines can see it when I browse the Network Neighborhood, sometimes not. The
W2k machine cannot see the XP machines at all when I browse the network but I can
map a drive to both. However, the mapped drive connection drops regularly and will
only reconnect if I reboot the W2k machine first.
I've tried installing NETBUI, changing with the Local Security settings, logging
into all machines the exact same way, etc. But nothing seems to help. It's very
frustrating and not the only Workgroup situation that I've encountered lately that
is unstable. Many of my clients are having similar problems. Is MS trying to force
people to buy Win2003 Server????
Grrrr.

Unfortunately, XP differentiates between the machine names. Meaning, if you're using
a Workgroup as opposed to a Domain, the "user" is a local account that is tied to
that particular PC, i.e., user@machine_name. Thus even if you create an account
on the W2kmachine with the same username and same security settings, since the W2k
machine name is different, the user account is unrecognized as valid on the XP machine.
If the two machines would accept each other's connection, then you could go into
Local Security settings (Administrative Tools) and add the other machine's local
account as valid. But this is a moot point since you can't get the XP machine to
allow the connection in the first place.
The frustrating part is that XP has no problem networking with another XP machine.
This feels to me like Microsoft's way of forcing people to upgrade.
Anyone have any idea what the answer to this is?

I have escatly the same problem and even when using a crossover cable it sthe same.
It seems that when the browser service goes off (periodically ~ 15min) then any
resources shared between the w2k wkstn and xp pro are lost - the security is reset
i think ?
I can still ping between them fine....
Does anyone know why or hwo to fix ?
