XP Upgrade--Error 691

OS 98, upgraded to XP. When trying to connect to the internet, continual error 691--invalid
username password. Verified the info. being entered into dialer is correct, logged
into a third party email website on a second system. Deleted/recreated dialer. Tried
different access number. Added Modem Init. String. Checked settings in Internet Options/Connection/Settings---retyped,
is correct. Same issue....
No PWL files to delete on XP. Ran a HyperTerm on modem, its working fine.
Is this some kind of glitch with the 98 upgrade to XP? Perhaps a poor XP installation??

This same question was asked here back in september, I checked no one answered it.
I searched Google, there must be hundreds of pages this one looks the most promising.

Hi Tracy , this may not sound at all logical , but please try it , delete the connection
from network connections , now before you recreate it,create another user account
in XP (control panel >user accounts) so you have at least 2 users available , then
log on to the default or admin and create the connection again, when it asks if
you want to make this connection available to all users of this computer > yes ,
that should fix it. Casey

I had exactly the same problem. I discovered later that the cause was an expired
ISP account, rather than an operating system error. I would try to resolve this by
getting a short-term internet access account with a limited number of hours, which
is the way most people access the internet here in Thailand. That way, you can eliminate
your existing ISP as being the source of the problem.

John....
Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, regarding this issue, I am the internet provider.
Haha. This was a user issue, that myself or other technicians could not easily solve.
The account is in good standing though!
Good idea though!

Bill:
Thanks for the link. As a support tech for an ISP, i use this page for the errors
I am not too familiar with. Google is a great tool for technical issues.

Casey:
Thanks alot for the suggestion. The person whom was actually dealing with this issue
directly decided to re-install and see if it made any difference. If it doesn't work
though, I will be sure to try this out.
Thanks!
