Question about 'Share an Internet Connection'

I have a home network with two computers at present. The host is
running XP; the client is running 98SE. Both are connected via a router.
My Internet connection is a dial-up through a 56k internal modem on the
host. File sharing between the two work stations is fine and the host
can dial and connect to the Internet. The client can also dial and
connect to my ISP. However I cannot access the Internet with my
browser (IE). Any ideas as to the problem. or what I can try??

I have the exact same setup in my house. one box is running winXP and win98SE.
My setup is also exactly the same, except without the router. What I did was set-up
a peer-to-peer network. Then, on the winXP box, right click on "Network Places",
go into the properties of the nic, go into advanced, and click on the box to enable
internet connection sharing. run through the wizard. then, on the win98 machine,
reset the tcp/ip to obtain automatically. reboot the machine and run through the
wizard. That's what I did, good luck

I have the same configuration as you do, except that my Internet connection is through
a cable modem.
I can access any Internet site via both computers but I don't remember the steps
I went through to get that to happen.
OTOH, my XP Pro PC is unable to see the shared drives on my old Win98SE PC using
workgroup computing. My Xp Pro PC also got an access violation in spoolsv.exe while
trying to setup my workgroup again over my existing workgroup. Could this be related
to the reason why Xp Pro can't see the Win98SE's shares?
Thanks,
Michael Bloom

Hi Don , well your internet share obviously works if your client can dial up , so
the browser is what needs configured , if i we're you I would run the Internet connection
wizard (not the network wizard)on the client , choosing a lan as the method to access
the internet, just go through the steps as prompted, this should configure IE. Case

You will need to share the drives you want to give access to - otherwise it will
not see the drives - or computer. After installing sharing - right click each drive
you want to give access to and choose sharing.

MSN Messenger also works and I can access the hard drive of the host machine, but
I can't browse web pages.
Driving me nuts

I have the same set up, and had a working home network. It some how disappeared,
and now I get this error "Spooler SubSystem App has encountered a problem and needs
to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." when I try to recreate the work group.
Both computers can access the web, but can not see each other. The Desktop gets the
error "mshome is not accessable. you might not have permission to use this network
resource. Contact the Administrator of this server to find out if you have access
permissions. The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available "
when I try to view workgroup computers
some one help please!

Try this guys, I was having the same problem and found this fix!
TIP #26: Why do I receive this error message: “\\MainPC\Main-C ( C ) in not accessible.
You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator
of this server to find out if you have access permissions.”
Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows NT all have an IRPStackSize value that controls
how much physical storage space and RAM are available to new applications, and some
new software installs incorrectly set this value.
This value ranges from 11 to 20 for XP and from 11 to 15 for Win2K and NT. If you
set this value to less than 11, you'll receive an error message indicating that the
system doesn't have enough server storage. As a result, clients won't be able to
access network shares and Event ID 2011 will appear in the System log.
To set the IRPStackSize back to the default (15 for XP, 11 for NT), perform the following
steps:
1. Start the registry editor (e.g., regedit.exe).
2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ Services
\lanmanserver\parameters.
3. Double-click IRPStackSize (or if this registry setting doesn't exist, create
it of type DWORD and ensure the case is correct).
4. Change the base to decimal, set the value to 11 for Win2K or NT or 15 for XP,
and click OK.
5. Reboot the computer.

I kept playing with the Norton internet security. I now disable it when I'm about
to log on with my laptop (Win98). After I transfer files etc. I enable it again.
This solved the problem for me. It reoccured once since but I believe my isp was
down as well, so maybe that had an impact.

Hi all. I have this REALLY strange problem, i have a computer using XP Pro, and a
laptop using Win 98SE. I can find the respective computer if i search for them in
the "search for computer" feature. But i cant find the computers in the "my network"
or using the explorer and browse to microsoft network, infact i cant find anything,
not even the computer i use at the time. To be able to share files i have to use
the "connect network adapter" in the file explorer. Anyone knows what might cause
this problem?
They both are connected to a router which are connected to the web via a ADSL modem.
I have added the IPs to both computers firewalls (zonealarm and NIS).

Listen, I went through countless forums related to 'spooler subsystem' error when
setting up ics, and found nothing that worked. In the end, it was the recent upgrade
of zone alarm that did it to me. I'm waiting for a response from za, and if necessary,
I'll roll it back to a previous version of za. My current version that's blocking
ics is ZA v.3.7. I've always used ZA with ICS without fail.

I had to change the Registry settings to get that to stop. But even that didn't help
my problem. Finally turning OFF the QoS Packet Scheduler (Local Area Connection properties)
allowed my two XP computers to connect to each other. Crazy!

After reading all the answers, the QOS thing did it for me! you must remove the check
mark from the QOS both on the clients and the server and then it connected the clients
to the Internet.
Thanks for the great tips

If you are still having this problem with the "spooler subsystem app" and the QoS
fix didnt help try going into your printers section in Control Panel and removing
the Intuit objects. This has helped quite a few of my customers and may help you
as well.

I had the exact same problem. Two PC's running XP Pro connected via Linksys Router
to a DSL modem. Shared Internet access was fine but could not share files between
PC's. Had to do two things:
1. Disable Firewall on both Network connections.
2. Click on "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP" in WINS tab of Advanced TCP/IP Settings.
Of course, this is not a very secure arrangement so I will have to come up with an
alternate configuration. But if you need to copy files over the two XP machines this
should do the trick.

Help. I've got 30 hours in this. I have a Windows XP Media and XP Pro contected directly
to the internet via a Linkysis router to a cable modem. Both computers get internet
connection. I can connect to my laptop running 2000 over the network to the XP Pro
machine. I can't connect ot eh XP Media edition. I keep getting
C:\DOCUME~1\THOMAS~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER22.tmp.dir00\spoolsv.exe.mdmp
C:\DOCUME~1\THOMAS~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER22.tmp.dir00\appcompat.txt
szAppName : SPOOLSV.EXE szAppVer : 5.1.2600.0 szModName : ntdll.dll
szModVer : 5.1.2600.1217 offset : 0002c32b
Spooler SubSystem App has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry
for the inconvenience.
I've tried all of the above suggestions (QOS, regedit.exe, etc)
Also it's inconsistent, one day I got them working and the next day they stopped.
Helppppppp
Thanks

this error message, "Spooler SubSystem App has encounteres a problem and needs to
close". Did you ever get a valid resolution on this issue? I sure would appreciate
any help.

I had the same error trying to connect two PC at home. Deinstalling the firewall,
modifying the registry and any other suggested solutions on the web didn't solved
the problem.
Finally, i succeeded just by terminating the spooler during the local network configuration
(open a command window and enter the command NET STOP SPOOLER and after the configuration
is completed either reboot the PC or make NET START SPOOLER).

I, too, had the same "spooler" error. Uninstalled ZoneAlarm Pro Suite, BINGO! Works
now!!! So if you have upgraded ZA try removing it. Worked for me after weeks of not
being able to share between my machines. One machine still has ZA Pro Suite on it
and it is OK. The machine that I removed ZA from was XP Pro, the other XP Home. I
don't know if that made a difference or not but it worked for me! I may not have
had some setting in ZA set right, but both were set up the same as far as I know.

What I think is happening is that there are two problems. One is the spoolsv.exe
access violation - in my case caused by having too many extra services running -
in particular "FREEMem", which runs in the background. I turned it off and got past
the crash in the network config. But things still didn't work. The computers could
not find each other even though they were in the same workgroup. Finally, I realized
that the LAN configuration was the second problem. By going into the LAN properties,
and surrepetitiously selecting INSTALL then clicking on PROTOCOL, and one at a time
choosing them all I got the right protocols. There is another thread on this same
site that addresses the second problem. I dont know if I should blame Microsoft or
DLink (My wireless router). It looks to me to be a Microsoft bug - shouldnt the default
be "all protocols", and then let people experiment with removing the ones they think
they dont need? The two protocols needed are (of course) TCP/IP and NETBIOS.

HEY EVERYBODY
This is an answer to the Spool app error, when you can't do file sharing.
I am a MS XP SP2 tech, and I found this forum while doing research for a client of
mine with the same problem. While this forum didn't solve his problem, the Visual
KB we have sorta did.
What he did before calling me was uninstall Norton Internet Security, which got rid
of his software firewall.
Then, we got that Print Spool service error (exact one everyone else had) when in
the midst of running the Network Setup Wizard.
So I had him right-click My Computer and click Manage..., then open Services & Applications,
then click Services. In the Services window, click Print Spooler service and STOP
it.
Then, run the Network Setup Wizard to start file & printer sharing. It should give
no errrors.
Now you should be able to go into My Network Places and access the other computer's
shared files.
After you have setup access to the shared network resources, go back to the system
management place for Services, and START the Print Spooler service again.
It took me almost two hours to figure that out, but it worked for my client.
Hope it works for y'all, too!

This is invariably caused by using the "Setup a Home or Small Office Network" wizard.
Articles 324757/810894 do not resolve the problem and send novice users into the
registry.
Instead download the utility posted by Brother Ltd which repairs the spooler:
