I got round it by using a windows98 boot disk, which got me to dos with cd-rom support. I then navigated my way onto the WinXP cd, found Winnt file (i think) in the i386 folder... which launched the setup...

Your system should boot from your CD drive with the XP installation CD. You should be able to go into safe mode by pressing F8 key rapidly a few times just after the CMOS boot message on boot up. You must be running a old system. My system has a CMOS setting to recognize my CD drive and boot up as a system disk. Has yours?

You should enter your bios and set the Boot order so that your cdrom is accessed first. This way, the computer will boot the XP CD in the drive and allow the system to startup.
