Question about 'Things that slow down system bootup'

I have a question about Things that slow down system bootup:

Each time I boot-up my PC hangs at startup! I am running WinXP Pro on a NTFS partition. I have 256Mb RAM (PC133) DIMMS. When I first loaded up windows, it would start really quickly, but now seems to hang at startup, for about 5mins! I have plenty of disk space free for swapfile too ..!! I recently loaded Zone Alarm onto my PC, but have disabled "Load at Startup" It says it is XP ready and does not use a lot of the system resources at start-up! How do I improve my boot-up, so it loads faster? Please advise! ... Thanks :o)

I have encountered a very similar problem. The solution for me was to download some xp drivers for my creative 5.1 soundcard and it was all sorted. Hope this is of some help.

Go to RUN and type in: msconfig When that comes the screen comes up go to the STARTUP then UNCHECK any programs that you do not want to run at start up. Do not mess with any of the registry items, etc., only the main programs which you do not want to start. It speeds up your system tremendously at start up.

I had the same problem just occured with XP. Finally the driver for my onboard LAN which automatically installed by XP didn't work properly, I used the manufacturer's disc to replace, Works like a charm now! Don't trust all drivers installed by XP even it doesn't give any errors under "Device Manager". Good Luck

spyware can cause this too, I use Spybot Search and Destroy (free download) weekly on my machine and my customer's machines to clean out most of this crap. They are loading and running in the background thus sucking up resources. I had a customer with the same problem on his notebook, Spybot S & D cleaned out 450+ little bots he had picked up while playing on Kaza. BTW Kaza and the new Napsters of the world are wonderful places to get these bots and they have the potential to be very dangerous from a security standpoint.

Actually, adding more RAM won't solve the issue of your PC hanging during startup. In the event something has been installed during the time it worked properly until now, go to Start/Run then type MSCONFIG and disable everything in the Startup tab (the one to the very right) and if it comes up normally then start enabling necessary startup items like anti-virus programs and firewall, etc. then restart when prompted and see which item is causing your excessive boot time. It may seem time consuming having to reboot every time but this process of elimination will give you 95% success rate that you'll find your culprit.
