If you open the folder with the pictures / right click on the picture to be edited
/ choose the open with option and your favorite picture editing application may be
there. If it is it will open in this program. When you save the editted picture,
it will open in that program again for futher editting.

Run regedit
Change the key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\SystemFileAssociations\image\shell\edit\command
to be the photoeditor you prefer. For example, I changed mine from
"%systemroot%\system32\mspaint.exe" "%1"
to
"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\PhotoEd\Photoed.exe" "%1"
close regedit.
It just works.

I don't know if this problem is still affecting you, but here is the fix:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;q185501
To resolve this problem:
1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then press ENTER.
2. Locate and click the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Applets\Paint
3. Right-click the registry key, and then click Delete.
This registry key is rebuilt the next time that you start Paint.
I myself tried reinstalling XP, which didn't help at all, then I stumbled across
this support thread and it did the trick.
Take care,
- Paps

I too unsuccessfully tried re-installing XP to get mspaint.exe working again, but
doing so resulted in my losing all my dial-up internet connections! These could not
be re-entered with the New Connection Wizard, since Connect Using a Dial-up Modem
was gray-ed out. The solution to the problem is at http://support.microsoft.com item
329441 --I used Microsoft's workaround method of deleting two registry keys, since
without the internet connection I could not easily use their method of reinstalling
Service Pack 1. I suspect Paint stopped from something on the Web, though a scan
doesn't find any virus.

WOW............ this advice was great. I too had a problem with my paint program,it
kept producing error messages and would not allow me to open.
I asked around for help with NO LUCK!! My kids and I use it all the time and really
missed it.
I am not an advanced user, but at the same time I am not afraid to use and explore
around on the computer either. So I was DETERMINED to find a solution to this on
my own.
I came to this site via search engine read all the replys
and thought, take a chance and I foowed the instructions and**TA-DA** I clicked on
Paint and it opened. I'm so happy................I repaired it all by myself (of
course, thanks to you) But my "Computer Know it all" nephews (LOL) will be none the
wiser.
THANKS A MILLION !!!!!!

the paint program (windows 98) is doing the same again giving me that "error message",
so I tried to repeat the procedure that worked before but when I get to the last
step, when clickng the "paint" key,I do not see a "registry" key to right click
on to delete,(could this be because I deleted it before?) Since I am not to knowledgeable
about computers, I didn't go any further witout checking back here first, "Don't
wanna go screwing up everything" (LOL) Is there any information that you or anyone
knows that could help me with this? My kids and I use the paint program alot for
all sorts of stuff and are really lost without it !! Thanks a million in advance,

Hi Greyroonie: You follow Paps' instructions:
YOU GO TO - Start- run - type regedit - enter -then to: HKEY_CURRENT..../Applets/Paint
Paint is the registry you are looking for, there is no such "registry" file - you
right click paint and hit the delete with no fear. Then you click in your mspaint.exe
and VOILA! You are back in business. Warm Regards from Sunny Florida- ValEria

This work perfectly for me as well, however, I wish to use Paint Shop Pro as the
default. I replaced

edit, the Paintshop program open but desplayed the following error "Unable To Open

Any suggestions?

I don't know if those are typos in your path or if they were intentional but:
1. Recheck the path to your PSP. - I navigated to my program of choice through Windows
Explorer & then just copied the path from the address bar & pasted it in the registry.
2. You have "961" at the end where it used to say "%1" - why?
I may be delving too deep for your own good but I'd take another look at these two
things & see if that resolves your trouble. Also, have you tried opening this file
without going through Picture & Fax Viewer just to make sure the file is not corrupt?
I hope this helps.

The "961" was at the end of the originial mspaint.exe registry entry. I just included
it with the new Paintshop command. I copied the path from windows explorer as well
but the psp.exe was not present due to typo error. I removed the "961" and retried.
The psp program opened however the file to be edited did not. Puzzling! Suggestions?
Oh by the way, the psp program opened fine.

I recently found that when I double-clicked on a fax in my Outbox of the MS Fax Console,
it was launching Paintshop which failed to view my fax.
To restore the default MS Windows Picture and Fax viewer (MSFaxConsoleTempPreview),
I discovered a file called 'TIF/TIFF File Association Fix' which restores the default
associations for TIF/TIFF files. Written by Doug Knox, it has restored my Fax Viewer,
and is available at: http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you......
It works. Was stuck trying to get Mspaint to work today - so I could continue developing
a class lesson [after using it last night when it apparently died] and spent the
whole day trying to replace files so it would work again.
Your solution worked in a second.
Thanks again.....

SystemFileAssociations comes after all of the System.Blahs (specifically after System.Version,
most likely) in the list. If you select one of the items in the 'classes' tree and
type 'T' (to jump down to the ones that start with 'T'), then the one directly above
it is usually the SystemFileAssociations that you're looking for.
I tested this on my system and it works perfectly. It should be there if you're using
XP.

Windows picture and fax viewer was a good working program for editing my digital
pitures. I had to reset my PC to factory installation, the Windows picture and fax
viewer disappeared for no reason and MSPaint (a non working editing program) pops
up every time . How do I get rid of MSPaint and get my Windows picture and fax viewer
back? I appreciate any help.

If you're still here...the same thing happened to me. I just fixed it by right clicking
the "paint" at the end of the trail and deleting . My mistake, before, was right
clicking and deleting the subject headings under "paint" because I didn't know the
registry key WAS "paint". I wanted to add this because it is sooo annoying and irritating
when people assume you know the "stupid" stuff. Good Luck.
