Question about 'Turn off the Flying Paper Animations'

I have a question about Turn off the Flying Paper Animations:

I was just using a resource hacker to play with "SHELL32.DLL" and discovered that the nasssty animations are stored in there. I would imagine that someone somewhere has the patience to edit this file and make them non-repeating.

Or would it just load all the frames anyhow?

I, too, have been tinkering with shell32.dll. It would be a very simple process of replacing the the AVI files with a static image, or even your own creation. The problem is replacing the current version of shell32.dll, which is in use from the moment Windows starts. Here are some Ideas: If you have winXP on a FAT partition, you MIGHT be able to use DOS to copy the new file over. If windows is on an NTFS partition, you would need to boot to the recovery console to access the file outside of the operating system. Again, I have tested neither of these methods. If anyone succeeds, please let me know. -Tx3rror tx3rror@hotmail.com

Just a little addition to what I noted previously: it is possible to replace the
current version of the shell32.dll file if the system is booted into Safe Mode with
Command Prompt. You will need to rename the current file (DO NOT DELETE) and copy
over your modified version.

To see a preview of some modified Windows dialogs:

Resource Hacker can be downloaded from:

go to http://bome.com/Restorator/ to get a copy of restorator, its a resource hacker. you can open up shell.dll from the system32 directory and there a re a lot of those animations in the avi directory. this is the best program to do so, i blieve, because you can view and edit many types of files resources and you dont need backup, just save of the file your editing, and it creates a backup of the previous copy. sometimes though if a file is being used you need to use a tool provided in the program to save it and next time windows starts it automatically replaces the old file with the new, its great check it!

There is windows 2000 resource kit file that will replace files like shell32.dll or other locked files I forget the name so sorry, but I remember seeing it mention on a tip about winxp at members.aol/axcel216. what it really does is automatically replaces the file on next boot. This is much easier then going throught the recovery console or booting to a command line.

To replace shell32.dll, or any other protected file, Google for and download an app called "Replacer.cmd". It will do the rest. If anyone wants, I can email screenshots of my Windows XP machine tricked out to look like Vista, shell32dll and all.

No need to do use any such application. Can do it all manually in safe mode. Firstly copy and paste the new file over the backup files that XP keeps tucked away (use Search to locate these - you only want to replace the CURRENT version of the particular file). Once you've done this, drag the sys32 copy to a back-up location HOLDING DOWN THE RIGHT MOUSE BUTTON...on release select "move here". Paste the modified copy of the file into the system32 folder and reboot. The only file thus far that I have not been able to safely relpace this was is the user32.dll - touching that ALWAYS brings on the blue screen of death on reboot!!
