Question about 'When I choose ''Shut Down'' from the Start Menu, my computer restarts instead of shutting down'
Thursday, March 14, 2002 at 5:51 pm Posted by Martin
(2 messages posted)
I am experiencing this problem. My computer restarts
instead of turning off when I select 'shut down'. I want to achieve a result
where my computer powers off by itself. No 'safe to shut down' message.<br>
My set up is as follows:
Pentium II 400, Asus P2B-LS mother board (latest bios revision), Windows XP Pro.
APM was not enabled automatically by Windows installation. I enabled it
manually.
These are the troubleshooting steps I have taken:
1. Disable reboot on error; So I can see if there is a BSOD (stop error) b4 it
reboots
I receive no BSOD, it just restarts
2. Disable APM.
Displays 'safe to shut down' message
at shut down
3. Disable power management in BIOS while enabling APM in Windows
Restarts instead of shutting down
4. Enable power management in BIOS while disabling APM in Windows
Displays 'safe to shut down' message
at shut down
That's as far as I have gotten. Without error messages I have no idea how to
isolate the problem. Bear in mind that this is all being tried after a clean
install using only default Windows drivers, so it is not because of non WDM
drivers.
I do not have Roxio Easy CD Creator 5.
Any ideas on the next step?
Thanks,
Martin

I have the same problem on my new P4 1.6 XPHome.
I`ve tried all the suggestions on this and other forums but to no avail - the only
solution I hav`nt tried is swapping the keyboard - apparently this is a major shut
down problem too. XP does not like legacy keyboards for some reason but I am not
going to change mine as I have CD buttons etc.

You answered your own question "APM was not enabled automatically by Windows setup"
why ?because setup found a problem and dissabled it ,check for Bios updates that
may offer a fix, but it could be hardware, if so then you are stuck with it

Hi, Just a thought, In your Control Panel choose Power options and look to see if
'Always On' is enabled, if it is select 'Home and office'.

Second thought on your problem try turning on APM support in BIOS also enable it
in device manager, "it may be a hidden device so select show hidden devices from
the pull down menu on View"
Cheers

I have a very similar problem, I actually thought my power supply has gone bad.
so i replaced that and no luck. everything for error restarting is disabled, bios
automatic power ons are off, powermanagement in both bios and windows is off, yet
still i cannot shut down either. What really stinks is i can't see an error message,
just black and a quick reset.
PS now my system takes forever loading up?
The only thing i could think of me doing was installing my FireWire card. I have
had no problem with my bios b4, is it recommended to update that?

This page has a troubleshing script you can follow. It seems to be a MS windows
issue caused by either a sound card or a network card forcing incompatibility or
driver incompatibility, check it out I will too. (I have the same problem you all
have mentioned

Do you have Office Xp? I had similar problem check Task Manager for MsOffice.exe,
deactivate it and try shutting down.
If that fixes things then disable it in startup options.
I now have no problems and OfficeXp still works perfectly.

I had the same problem, tried all sorts of troubleshooting routines with no luck.
Searched through all of the arcane and hard to find settings in the system, found
one that fixed the problem.
The solution (that worked for me):
>Go to Control Panel, open System
>On the "Advanced" page, in the "Startup and Recovery" section, click on "Settings."
>On the resulting page, go down to the "System failure" section, uncheck the "Automatically
restart" setting.
After doing this, the next time I attempted to shut down I got an error message pointing
me to the corrupted system file that was causing the sytem to "restart on system
failure" instead of shutting down. Replaced that file, no more problems since.
Hope it helps,
Dave M.

My problem was solved after I unchecked "reboot on error" at My Computer->Properties->Advanced->Start
and restore->Automatically reboot (uncheck).
When I tried to shut down, I got a message that said that there was a problem with
kbdclass.sys, so I uninstalled the keyboard driver and the mouse driver and Logitech
Mouseware and rebooted. Then Windows found the plug n' play drivers after reboot
and I could shut down normally again.

I solved this problem a long time ago. After applying the latest bios revision for
my motherboard, I reinstalled Windows XP and it detected my PC as an ACPI compliant
machine which is what it should have done from the start. No more APM, and no more
shut down problems.

The solution may be a simple one. By some reason this problem is seen if you are
using a Logitech Internet Keyboard or a Microsoft Natural Keyboard on Windows XP
Pro. Try using a generic keyboard, this solves the problem for me.

I had worked on a computer with the same problem. All of the micro$oft articals
and roxio fixes did not solve the issue. Various BIOS and Device Manager configuration
failed to solve it either. I eventually solved it by disabling "Task Scheduler".
I did this through msconfig under the services tab. Just uncheck the box. It doesn't
solve the problem in all computers but it did on this one. This computer was a Windows
XP Home from Gateway.

Another culprit may be updated network card drivers installed after you installed
Windows XP. Specifically the latest AMDtek network card drivers conflict with Windows
XP. If you are using a network card, try uninstalling it, then reboot your computer
and let Windows detect your new hardware. Allow Windows to install the Windows driver
instead of the manufacturer's drivers. Reboot and see if that does the trick.

SOLUTION ON SHUTDOWN PROBLEMS
I had the same experience on my friends' ibm 2196-31Q running WinXP which was win98SE
before, the computer always restart on shut down. I have tried every advice from
various forums regarding this type of problem. Some worked for a short period of
time, like unchecking the checkbox on task scheduler (start>>run>>type msconfig>>service
tab>>uncheck task scheduler) and restoring default on CMOS(presing del,ins and f1,
this depend on what you should press, you can see this right after you press the
power button to enter setup, bootup then selecting restore defaults and save the
settings) but most did'nt. What I would like to add is on how I solved this problem
totally, I have noticed that when you're computer shutdown it save settings as it
shows in the screen when shutting down, this may refer to small issues of what you're
computer remembers before turning off, like the processes running and what are connected
to the CPU, if something is different when you turn on the computer, it reconises
a wrong pattern according to what it remembers and thus affecting the system, this
was the issue on mine. I have discovered that when using my computer while connected
to the internet and tried to shut down, it did shutdown completely or just having
the telephone line connected, Btw, i use dial up in connecting. Another is it remembers
what was connected to it(CPU) before it shutdown (mouse, keyboard, monitor, telephone
line and speaker), this can also cause abnormal shutdown. In conclusion, don't change
anything before you turn on or off the computer. This worked for this type of computer,
not sure to work on others.

and the drivers seem kinda sketchy. He also put in a TAIMAG ethernet card D-0120
and I have a prickly feeling that it is causing the problem, because it took me forever
to find its driver. Her first issue was that she was losing connection every 20 mins
or so to the internet, even though the modem and the networking showed she was still
"on" but packets were not being sent.
I installed Windows Home, Norton Antivirus, of course the VGA and Sound drivers that
came with the motherboard, and XP did not find the ethernet card on its own like
it should. I took the thing out and put it back in on another PCI, and it found it.
But when i had to reinstall again because of a rebooting problem, Xp did not find
the ethernet card yet AGAIN.
DOH!!
Should i get a better card and driver that works with XP in a nicer way and try again?

I just solved this as well, the person who's computer had this problem had an audio
card installed 2 weeks before it started going wrong(why it took 2 weeks to go wrong
is a mystery 2 me) but all i did was disable onboard audio at the BIOS (hit F2 or
DEL at startup to get to BIOS) and it works perfectly now.
Only taken me 4 hours to sort out :( I should have known this computer was going
to be a pain when i found a crisp packet in the chassis.
thx for help guys

Hey people. Another good thing to try is to disable Wake on Lan, Wake on Modem and
Wake on PCI from your BIOS. These can be problematic with shutdown I have found.
