Question about 'Set Defaults in Explorer'
Friday, March 15, 2002 at 12:16 pm
Posted by Frank N Stein (1 messages posted)

I have a question about Set Defaults in Explorer:

When I follow these instructions for Win xp Home, they don't work. When I re-open the folder I have changed, it is back to exactly the same way it was, eg full sized window and icons, and every other folder is the same.

Try going into your Control Panel....choose Folders, and set a default for all folders... Hope this helps!

Another trick is to press the ctrl key down while closing the explorer window.

This is best way to get the job done...plus it works in most other versions of Windows as well! After you close the window while holding the Control key the next time you open the explorer it will remember your sort option, detail columns, and window size. One thing it WILL NOT do, however is return to the same folder, but there are other solutions to that posted on this site.

XP keeps changing randome folders to different styles. Some turn thumbnails, some go tiles, surprisingly, not so many go details mode like in 95/98. Worse, things set to one thing mite change to sth else. Anyone know where these settings are stored?

I also was very frustrated with this annoyance. I found Microsoft Knowledge Base article Q282476 referring to this, although it is inaccurate as to the choice in the view tab of folder options. Instead of Like current folder click apply to all folders. It seemed to have worked for me although I have not yet logged off or restarted to see if it retains settings. Good luck

thank you it's not just me experiencing this... after countless attempts of selecting the current folder view "like current folder" XP would ignore this and randomly change the folder view - some would be grouped, some with images with thumbnails (while others not at all). if i save control panel as icon view then all folders are displayed icon view, i then change my folder view back to details and hey presto, control panel is now details ! i never used to have that problem under 98. i have found little information around that explains this behaviour...

Yes, it's not just you. I have this problem too, no matter how many times I tell XP to leave all my folders on detail view, it randomly changes them back to huge folder view or a tile view (seems to happen if there are images in a folder). Especially seems to happen on new folders. Very very annoying.

Set Windows Explorer's Details view as the default. XP's default Windows Explorer display uses the Large Icon view, which is devoid of meaningful information. To use the Details view as the default, open Windows Explorer and select View, Details. Next, select Tools, then select Folder Options. On the View tab, select Apply to All Folders.

Yes, we've done this... the problem is that XP will randomly change the folders *back* to large icon view, despite you setting the default to detail view.

Here is a procedure that works for me. 1) In the explorer window select your view of choice. (e.g. details, icons etc) 2) select the tools --> folder options and select the view tab. 3) Make sure that the option "Remember each folder's view setting" is turned off. 4) Now click apply to all folders. The crappy os will now remember your folder settings. hope this helps...This problem is quite a pain in the rear. santy

FYI, I found none of the fixes worked ... until I turned off my (current) installed version of Freeshade. From then, all was well with window sizes. I've installed another Freeware "window shade" program, WinRoll, which does not seem to create the same problems.

As usual the registry hack is the normally the "best" solution (it works!) but of course registry hacking is dangerous unless you learn the structure. Also add on packages can override anything windows sets up so we have to remove them before we consider anything directly windows so use caution!! 8-)

It's a "paper-scissors-rock" problem - depending on what settings are made (and where!) they can trump each other like the game.

For anyone not interested in going into the registry here's a work-around to let your icon folders and Windows Explorer detail views coexist -

For shortcut accessed folders on the desktop: Make sure that remember each folder's settings IS on, and leave the shortcut alone - use Windows Explorer to navigate to the actual folder, once you can see the contents of the folder in Explorer, set the view there.

For actual folders on the desktop: move them off the desktop (I put them in a My Docs subfolder for Sh*ts & Gr*ns but it shouldn't matter where..) then put shortcuts to them back on the desktop. Follow the first procedure to set their views.

This has got to be an SP1 issue because that's when this started for me - I think I'll wait before trying SP2.

About all these folder settings, how would I manage to...

1- tell Explorer to set c:\mp3s and sub-folders as detail view with music specific
columns.
2- tell Explorer to set c:\images and sub-folders as thumbnail view
3- tell Explorer to set c:\worddocs and sub-folders as a standard detailed folder.

All I see is "Apply to all folders" choice in "Tools/Folder Options", nothing like
"Apply to sub-folders".

And the "Customize this folder..." right-click choice on the folder put whatever
needed for say music or images as type of folder and has a "sub-folders" option,
but resets the view to tiles, can't keep the view option.

Thanks

With one exception, I want all my folders to open in Details View (usually I can get this to "stick" when applied to all folders). However I want my image folder -- the parent folder (3000 files) and all 175 sub-folders -- to always open in Thumbnail View. I don't suppose this is possible in WinXP without opening each and every one of them and changing it to Thumbnail View. Is there software out there to enable this -- to enable setting different views for different folders?

This is exactly what I was wondering. I too want to know if there is a way to apply folder view setting to subfolders only (rather than to all folders everywhere). If not, is there at least a utility somewhere that does this? Can't believe how retarded windows can be after all these years of development....

Thanks for that. I tried FVM 1 and 2 and they worked, but with some problems. I got in touch with the author of the scripts, Keith Miller, and he gave me a link to the new version of the script that worked brilliantly. Finally, a solution to this ridiculous problem!! Here is Keith's blurb about FVM3 and the link to download it: "Version 3 of FVM is a vast improvement over the other two. Rather than having to open & close each subfolder to set the view, I finally figured out how to set inheritance for the parent folder. This means I only have to open the selected folder, set its inherited view, and then delete any existing saved views under that folder. Any subfolder takes on those view settings the first time it is opened, and, better yet, the custom setting is applied to any new subfolders created. I really recommend you download it and opt for clearing all existing settings. It doesn't take hardly any time at all, no matter how many subfolders, to set major hierarchies to your liking. The link is: http://mysite.verizon.net/res18hr7/FVM3.zip"

It's unbelievable that the answer is to do the opposite of the 'instructions' from MS, but after years of frustration this is the answer, and it is so bloody simple. It comes too late for my hair, though. That has all been torn out in rage. I endorse most heartily the thanks to santy.

I'm on XP SP3 and none of these 'fix it via Windows' works for me. All they do is reset *all* my folders and files to 'view icons' (even all those which I had already manually and painstakingly changed to 'view details'). Is there any Windows *.INI (or other config) file in which we can set the 'view' default to 'details'? If yes, where and which parameter(s) should we change to what - so that 'view details' becomes the default for everything (folders, subfolders, files, etc.)? It's about time Microsoft understood that some of us can read and we don't need pictures to help us do that. Thanks in advance.
