Question about 'Can't access some websites while using a shared PPPoE connection'

I read the article with much interest, because I am having this exact problem on my network. I recently acquired a XP box and would like to use ICS to connect 3 other PCs - a ME and 2 95s. The 95s work fine but the ME will not connect to certain websites. I tried the ping from the ME and could never reach the host PC, no matter how small the setting! Another curious thing is that the ME box has an IP address of 192.168.0.248. The others are like 1,2 and 3. I wonder if this i contributing to the problem. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks,

First of first, once you have configured ICS, all client machines should all be configured using DHCP. ICS can take care most of the rest. My problems are: (1). All client machines seem having slower Internet access speed. (2). All client machines still have problem accessing some web pages, especially if sites need SSL. (3). Outlook Express on client machines are not able to reach hotmail server (not always, but most time). I am using AT&T broadband, I am not sure if it has something to do with my problems.

I have a Win2000 box running ICS that provides internet access for an ME computer. For a while I couldn't figure out why the ME comp couldn't get to certain websites. Then I noticed all the websites were ones that used SSL. I just found this workaround, which works great for me: http://www.allensmith.net/Network/xpICS.htm

The article at http://www.allensmith.net/Network/xpICS.htm has been updated. The NEW second page explains the problem of using ICS with PPPoE Internet access, then presents the real solution.

Interesting. I tried changing my MTU size before I found the workaround I first posted, but it didn't seem to help anything.

Oh, and and this knowledge base article was the one I first found: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;q283165

That KB article seems to tell how to try and ajust the MTU on the PPPoE. It is the MTU for the Ethernet adapter on (each and every) ICS Client computer that needs to be ajusted to the correct (lower) value. Otherwise, if my original work-around is what works for you, then possibly just leave it at that. ... Allen
