GDIPLUS.MAN error on installation

When trying to install XP Pro, I get an error message saying that "A component's
file does not match the verification information present in the component manifest"....what
the heck does this mean? I then get a second window showing a system log file with
"C:\$WIN_NT$.~LS\I386\asms\1000\MSFT\windows\GDIPLUS\GDIPLUS.MAN on line 4".....anyone
else had this problem? Any suggestions? Thanks!!

The $WIN_NT$.~LS and $WIN_NT$.~BT directories are the temporary directories windows
installed to your harddrive prior to installation. These or your CD is corrupt.
This could have occured due to bad ram, bad blocks on the harddrive or read errors
on the CD-ROM. Try reformatting with the /u switch to locate bad blocks. Take out
any thing you don't need right away. Just leave the CD-ROM, 1 stick of RAM, Vidcard,
etc -- you get the picture, and reinstall. You can add the cards after the OS is
installed. You might also want to run Memtest86 to verify your RAM. Also initially
set your RAM timings to non-aggressive settings in the BIOS during the installation.

I have the same error, and I suspect it is a motherboard problem. I have a ECS K7S5
mobo, with a SIS 735 chipset. What do you have?

I was having the exact same problem while trying to install Windows XP home on my
daughter's computer (the upgrade was a Christmas gift for her). What I noticed was
that the CD rom drive was doing a lot of thrashing around as it was finishing up
in the "copying files" mode. After the next restart, then the fatal error with the
"A component's file does not match the verification information" error. I had successfully
installed another copy of XP on my computer a few months earlier, so I inserted her
disc into my drive and opened the GDIPLUS.MAN file in notepad. It opened easily
and I was able to read the file. I then took the same CD down to her computer and
did the same thing. The drive would thrash around a while and then open, but the
file was jibberish. Her drive just couldn't read that CD, even though it read fine
on my machine. So...I swapped CD rom drives with her and the install then went fine
from then on, with no problems, and I got it up and running.
For some reason (copy protection, maybe?), some cd rom drives just can't read the
CD correctly (her drive was about 2 years old, while mine is a new Sony). Probably
by updating your CDrom drive, if it's a few years old, will get you around the problem
also. Not sure this will help you, but it worked for me.

I had the EXACT same problem. I was using the XP pro (SP-1) upgrade. The gdiplus.man
file was corrupt. I had to use an older copy of xp pro to get the install to work.
The store I got it from said that they just got the shipment in. I'm thinking that
M$ has a bad batch of XP out there with a corrupt gdiplus.man file.
In case anyone else runs into this problem:
If like me, after windows copies the corrupt file to the hard drive (i was doing
a fresh install), you are in trouble. Even armed with a fresh copy if xp pro, it
will continue to read the corrupt file from the temp folder on the harddrive. I was
unable to delete the folders while the drive was being used as the master drive.
I had to swap the drive out and put it into a new computer and delete the folders
that way. Then I put it back into the other computer and used an older version of
xp pro to complete the install. Wasted my whole day on this...

Loren: Wherever you are, thank you so much for posting this information about the
GDIPLUS.MAN error. I have an HP Pavillion I bought back in 1999. Since I was experiencing
trouble with my Windows 98 and had a bunch of junk on the hard drive I didn't want
anymore, I told the XP Home upgrade to wipe the partition and reinstall the whole
OS. I got this same error several times, and -- just as Loren described -- I was
hearing a lot of weird noises from my CD drive. It just wasn't copying the file correctly.
Of course, my hard drive was wiped by the time the error occurred, so for a while
I thought I was going to have to junk the whole system, since my factory backup disks
were lost about three moves ago. (I moved a lot when I lived in Savannah, Ga.) But
... My computer also has an old DVD drive, so I tried to install the same program
from the same disk using the DVD drive instead of the CD drive. I told the disk to
reformat the hard drive and install Windows XP. It worked like a charm. No problems
whatsoever. The new OS has even corrected the problems I was having with Win 98.
So, if you're having this problem, especially with an HP, try swapping CD drives
or using a DVD drive if you have one. If you don't, I'm pretty sure you can borrow
a drive from another machine and then swap it back after you install. In my new XP
environment, I've read information from the CD drive that was giving me problems
on the install, and everything seems to work just fine. Of course, the main reason
I did all this was so that my soon-to-be wife would have a semi-fast machine she
could use for her med school classes. I got an Apple G4 laptop about two months ago
and use that instead. It's a much superior machine with a superior operating system
that doesn't have the kinds of problems Microsoft is known for. --Erik Tryggestad,

Just the same problem Elliot described... in the installation process my cd reader
cannot find the file... then in closing the window the pc restarts the installation
arriving to the same point. I did find the gdiplus.dll on the web through my old
computer, but how to get it into the new one? And where to put it? Any ideas?

Trying to upgrad Win ME to Win XP Home Ed. and got corrupt file (\$win_NT$.~\i386\asms\1000\
MSFT\Windows\gdiplus\gdiplus.cat) contains all zeros error message that stopped installatioin.
I also noticed the CD drive working hard at the end of file transfer step of installation.
I assume my problem is related to the problems sited in this thread. I have an old
CD drive that I replaced with a "good" Yamaha CD burner recently. Guess I can try
the old drive or go looking for the gdiplus.dll file. At least I may now have some
idea of what is going on. Thanks to all the posts on this thread.

I can relate to all the above. I had a PC at work which kept crashing. Nothing left
to do except a re-install. I got the same error GDIPLUS.MAN. Plus others, i seemed
to get different message every time i rebooted. I connected a different CD drive
with the same disc in the drive and let xp continue with the install. All the temp
files were already on the c drive and xp loaded first time. no corruption nothing.

SOLUTION IN CASE OF WRONGLY BURNED CD:
Hello all,
I had this same problem, and after some googling I found that it was due to a badly
burned CD (even though it was legally downloaded). Most likely I burned it in Track-At-Once
mode where it should have been Disc-At-Once. In any case, the file on the disc was
corrupted.
Moreover, the environment with which I had burned the install CD was already overwritten
by XP, so I would have to install the old OS all over again, just to burn a single
CD! Instead, I used a GNU/Linux LiveCD, and used it to mount the iso (which was on
a different partition - always keep documents/files and programs seperate), copy
the files to a temporary directory on the secondary partition, then point the installer
to this directory. Doing all this would mean that I wouldn't have to burn another
CD.
If you know your way around with linux it's done in 10 seconds (minus copying time),
and even if you don't it's just a matter of googling the relevant mount commands
(e.g. "linux mount cdrom").
Rebooting into the half-finished XP install (with the broken XP disc not in the computer),
I pointed the installer to the temporary directory (actually, I had to do this about
30 times - stupid installer!). Everything from there on worked as planned.
Hope this helps somebody,
Charl

I have the same error. I've tried installing it from 2 different DVD drives and
2 different CD drives. I've tried installing from 2 totally different disk (both
of them original holographed cd's.)
I've tested the RAM with Memtest. Tested the SATA hard drive with WD diagnostics.
No errors on either one of them. I swapped hard drives and put an IDE in it. No
matter what I do, I still get this error. I've never seen anything like it.

Got it figured out. The RAM I had installed was PC5300 667MHz and my FSB was set
at 1066 MHZ. I changed the speed of the FSB in bios to match the speed of the RAM
and Voila, worked like a charm. I have since cranked the speed of the FSB back up
and it runs great.
