When opening my email i seemed to only view the pictures in the above format please
can you tell me how to turn it off. I have only just purchased this computer and
am still getting to the feel around it.

1. Run Regedit
2. Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT / SystemFileAssociations / image / ShellEx / ContextMenuHandlers
3. Delete or rename the key ShellImagePreview

This is arguably Windows most annoying so called feature. It is possible to get rid
of it you must go onto the menu bar of any folder and then to "folder option" and
click the "file types" tab and there will be a list of file extensions select the
one you want to change click the change button and select the program you want to
use, if you do not see the right program listed you will have to click "browse" to
find it yourself.
Here is a list of extension you might want to change:

Other less common ones include:
.ani
.cur
.dib
.ico
.jfif

There is a non-invasive way (no regedit involved) to change your preferred image
viewer - In my case, I want to use ACDSee to view my images instead of Microsoft
Picture viewer.
I right click on an image, select "Open With" then "Choose Program." From the list
of software, I select the program I want and check off "Always use the selected program
to open this kind of file."
Now when I double-click on an image it doesn't preview in Microsoft's picture viewer,
instead it opens in my preferred image viewer.

Except this doesn't work. Not for BMP anyway, since the "always use the selected
program to open this kind of file" is disabled and can't be chosen!
