Question about 'Using .CAB Files'
Wednesday, April 3, 2002 at 4:33 am
Posted by Rae Borgarding (2 messages posted)

I have a question about Using .CAB Files:

On my cd-rw softwear when I try to install the new program from Roxie supposedly for xp the installation stops half-way thru and a window comes up stating cannot find D:Data.cab files and you can't go any farther. I have re-installed xp and tried again and it don't work. Roxio has send me an upgraded disk for my Easy CD Creator Platinum 5, (5.01) and the same thing happens. What should I do

I had a similair problem in that I knew the file was there because I could see it on the CD, but XP was telling me it was either corrupt or not there (depending on how it felt). The only way I solved it was by downloading another copy of the file from ?somewhere? on the internet and that did the job.

I had the same problem, but it was an easy one to solve: Copy the entire CD to a dummy directory on your hard drive. Remove the CD. Then execute the setup from the hard drive. Why this works I do not know. I also have had to do this for some other programs under XP (e.g., Norton System Works 2002).

I had to totally remove my ntsf systems in both my computers, repartition and reformat back to windows 98 and then put the xp home and xp pro in the fat32 system to get the Roxio program to work, however, part of the direct cd program does not work yet. I am thoroughly discusted with Roxio. I prefer the ntsf system it has less problems.

I had the same problem under Win2K. (on 10 different machines) See the thing is we can see the Data.cab file on a CD, but it just cannot read it. I installed Win2k again on one system and it solved the problem.

On my other system i have the old version of Easy Creator which is Version 4.02.

Copy the files from the CD to your hard drive and install from the drive. We found that works.

A few days ago I down loaded Roxio CD Creator 5.0 I was having problems and decided to delete it. What a mess. I found and deleted all the files except 5 F207 C:/DATA.CAB 3K jws files. When I try to open my C drive a message comes up about installing these files (direct CD) and I have to right click to by pass this message to open my C drive. How do I get rid of these DATA.CAB files. I tried to delete, it won't let me, it says I have to extract them to another place. If I do that will they go to alot of other places? I just want to get rid of them...thanks Bernie.

I'm afraid I can't remember now, I just did a search for it on Google and found it
on an ftp site somewhere (I was lucky I think).
I no longer use Easy CD, as it's not so easy to use! [grins] I use Nero instead now.

I have also hade many problems with cab files. I am running windows XP pro on a hp pavilion 520c. I can't seem to install anything off of cd media that deals with cab files. Whenever I install something it always has an error at the first cab file. I have recently found out that the windows XP version that came PRELOADED on my hp is not meant to run on this computer. Hp is having a hard time fixing there gay computers for xp... so I will probably have to downgrade just to be able to install things. I would appreciate any help on this subject, so if you know something I don't e-mail me. Thanks

I had this same problem installing programs in XP. Seemed to be exclusive to programs that used a certain type of Win XP installer. They could never detect .CAB files that were actually fine and on the CD all along. A change of CD drive didn't make much of a difference either. The only thing that worked for me was formatting my hard drive and installing XP again. Everything's back to normal now. What a relief! Hope this helps. Shanks

I have the same problem , BUT, it still does not work. I have copied the diskto the HD and tried to run it from C: and also D:( my other HD) I even tried to install it over the network (wireless) from another computer but to no avail. Some disks work, others wont. Office wont, Matrix reloaded wont (this is where I am really stuck because i did have it installed but had to do a format recently and havent been able to install it on the fresh install f windows) . All I get is a msg saying that te cab file is corrupt etc, When i try to "unzip " it on my HD i get a "windows naming before 1998 incompatability" something or other. I would have thought Windows XP Pro could handle anything since 1998!!!! Anyway , anybody have any Other suggestins. Thanks Gary

Copy the whole CD into your hard disk, then install Easy CD Creator from your hard disk instead of CD.

I have a problem that are making me loose my mind. I recently tried to upgrade from Windows Me to Windows XP SP1, and since that it's been a nightmare. When I'm doing the instalation in the blue screen, the installer says that are some files missing (odd enough, aren't always the same files that are missing!), and sometimes I'm not able to finish the instalation ... When I can make the instalation, I not able to install any program that uses CAB files. It tried to install lots of times Office and Championship Manager 4 and the answer I get in the middle of the instalation process is that I have a CAB file that is corrupt ... I need to say that when I used Windows Me, everything worked perfectly, and that I've already tried to install my Windows XP in a friend's computer and he had no problems. My system is a Pentium at 2.6 Ghz, with a Geforce 4 (with 128 Mb) and a HDD of 40 Mb. Please somebody help me because I'm very near to throw Windows XP through the window ... Regards, José

I got the same problem and i worked around it by setting the fsb of my new cpu from 166Mhz to 133Mhz. Try lowering your fsb in the bios of your mainboard.

My fix is: 1) Goto start and run 2) Type in regedit 3) HKey_Local_Machine 4) Goto Software 5) Goto Microsoft 6) Goto WinNT 7) And goto Winlogon (click on winlogon) Go the right is a name called "allocatecdroms" 9) If the value is "1", you will get the error message with cab files. 10) Change the value to "0" and save. This may be a security policy setting. If you enable the Windows registry setting to restrict access to cdrom to local accounts only. To fix open administrative tools - local policy - security options - Devices: Restrict CD-ROM access to locally logged-on users only. Change to disabled. Or the advice about coping the whole cd to your hard drive is also valid.

I've had the same 'Cannot file [cab file]' on installations recently too even though the file is on the disk. First is was on Silent Hill 3 which was on a DVD-ROM on my desktop PC. At the time I put it to the install pack on the game. I recently purchased a laptop and tried installing a Bluetooth network, the install CD-ROM worked find on the laptop DVD drive but I got the same 'Cannot find [cab file] on the desktop DVD drive. As it worked on the laptop (OS XP Home) and 4 other PC's at work (3 Win98 and 1 Win2k Server) then I could discount the CD-ROM itself. I tried installing the drivers on the Desktop machine again (XP-Pro) this time from the CD-RW drive and got the same 'Cannot find [cab file]' again....Discounting the DVD drive as the problem. So it's either something I've installed or setting I've changed on the destop PC is my opinion (but what is a mystry). I have got PowerArchiver installed and is assosiated to CAB files which might be a possible cause?

.Cab files are really funny. You think you have the fully loaded CD through which you can install XP. Data.Cab files form a part of installation and if the system can't find the file while installing it is good to turnback and say you have the incomplete version. People have been complaining about this just like .DLL files. If at all you install the software you might have problems in copying games and running it on your system.

The tip for lowering the FSB speed worked for me. I had just put in an older processor, 133 seemed fine but got the copy errors when trying to put in xp. Putting it to 100 suddenly fixed it. Don't know why, but it definitely did the trick. Weird, as 133 seemed to work fine.

YES! This solution worked perfectly for me, solving a 2-year problem. THANK YOU! Only thing wrong with the instructions is there's a step missing after step 6... you need to expand "Current version". Thanks again for posting this solution, it's going to make life much easier for me.

omg -.-'' same thing happens to my Comp... when i install something with Data.Cab like that roxie it says Data.Cab is Error 1335. The cabinet file 'Data.Cab' required for this installation is corrurpt and cannot be used. this could inicate a network error, an error reading from the CD-ROM, or a problem with this package.
