Question about 'Getting Network Neighborhood to recognize newly attached computers'

I have two computers - one is running XP Home and the other running 2K Pro. They
are linked via a Linksys router that acts as a DHCP server. Both can ping the router
and each other however I can't get either one to show up in the other's My Network
Places.
I have another - third - PC, running 98, that shows up in the XP machines My Network
Places and the XP machine shows up in the 98's Network Neighborhood. It's just the
2K machine that seems to be off in a corner sulking.
Any thoughts? Insights? Ideas?
thanks a ton.

I have a P2P setup with WinME and WinXP Pro where the ME machine can see and access
XP's shares and such. XP can see the ME machine, but can't connect to it. It kept
saying that it's inaccessible. What I did was go gung-ho with the protocols. On
your 2K system have the following installed:
Client for Microsoft Networks
IPX/SPX
NetBIOS Support for IPX/SPX
NetBEUI
TCP/IP
File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks
And of course make sure that "Allow access to files" and "Allow access to printers"
are checked.
Plus, make sure that computers are using the same workgroup name (e.g. WORKGROUP
or MSHOME) -- and not a domain.
XP's setup is slightly different:
Client for Microsoft Networks
NWLink-IPX/SPX......(basically IPX/SPX)
NetBEUI Protocol
[NetBEUI's supposed to be not supported in WinXP, but can still be found and added
through the XP CD's "VALUEADD" folder.]
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
[Have "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP" turned on and see if that works.]
File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
Optional Protocols/Services to add would be:
QoS Packet Scheduler
Service Advertising Protocol
[I may forgotten something else, but that's all I think of off the top of my head.]
See if this works...

Cecil, thanks... I figured it was that and a combination of setting permissions.
One dumb question for you or anyone else. Let's assume for a moment that my client
doesn't have his XP installation disc laying around. Is there anywhere else to find
the NetBEUI
protocol I'll need so it can talk with the 2K machine?
thanks..

Another thing you can do is right-click on My Network Places (or whatever it's called)
and do a search for the other computer's name. If it comes up, you can then make
a shortcut. It's how I resolved the problem.
Oh, and about adding the protocols--a friend told me to modify window properties
so you can see hidden files too. That might be why it's not showing up.

I have the same dilemma, but maybe worser.
I have XP bootable CD, and I un-checked Hidden file in my windows explorer's folder
option. I still cant't find VALUEADDED or Netbeui file. I even did a Search/Find
of CD drive with the XP cd in and no luck - any idea where I can download the NetBEUI
file for XP?

This is an annoying problem that comes and goes for me and I found it might be due
to something called the Master Browser. I would do this first before messing around
with installing the various protocols. If stopping the Master Browser on the XP machine
works, you should see your problem fixed almost immediately.

In a small mixed OS workgroup network, you may want to disable W2K/XP master browser
and keep w9x or NT master browser because XP/W2K always win elections over others,
and other previous OS doesn't understand it. To disable master browser on W2K/XP,
go to Administrative Tools>Services, stop the Computer Browser.
