Question about 'Force Windows to Remember Window Positions'

I have a question about Force
Windows to Remember Window Positions:
Nice trick with the ctrl key, but Windows ALL VERSIONS is notoriously evil when it
comes to window positioning. Just when I set ALL of my window positions the way I
want it, BAM, it's like windows realizes this and then forgets them all. So, foolishly,
I try again and they hold until I do something else in the OS, like open another
program window or windows explorer, and then BAM, it forgets the settings. Why would
MS design such a chaotic and unreliable way to do this? Is this the new XPerience?
It's the same old nonsense with a prettier GUI.

I agree with everything you said this is my number 1 annoyance with XP. Folder want
remember how I set them to be. They only remember the last setting.
I've been looking for some shareware that would fix this problem but no luck yet.

Question about 'Force Windows to Remember Window and Folder Positions'

Hi,
I have a big problem with Windows XP. The same as everyone else has been having.
It does not effectively remember the folder views the way I have set them up. I really
need help guys as I deal with lots of files specially with DATE attributes and ICON
views. The whole reason I got windows XP was because it is supposed to be user friendly.
But I can see that it is a piece of CRAP! If anyone finds a fix to this. Please respond
to me directly at angels_soldier@yahoo.com I would more than appreciate your help
in this matter so I can help out other Frustrated MICROSOFT Followers like myself.

I have already posted about this exact same problem myself. It is DRIVING ME NUTS.
The strange thing is that I dont get it with all windows (a fair few stay exactlty
as I left them) but the Recycle Bin Window is without doubt the worst. I have set
this window position and size literally hundreds of times in the last month and the
damn thing just keeps going back to its own setting. This kind of crap is totally
unacceptable.

I understand your frustration my friend but we have to find a solution to this..if
you have any idea.. email me at angels_soldier@yahoo.com
Yes Recycle bin is the WORST! notice that when you add anything to the folders, they
loose their size and visual attributes... Isnt this NUTS??? IF MICROSOFT CANT DESIGN
A DECENT OPERATING SYSTEM, WHY DO THEY EXPECT US TO PAY SO DAMN MUCH FOR THEIR SOFTWARE?
Windows XP is only ALL LOOKS and NO Brains! Thats what it is. I feel sorry for Corporations
if they switch..as I use half of my business day just TWEAKING the dam thing. Infact
it just crashed on me today and had to re-install EVERYTHING. I say we support LINUX
as MUCH AS POSSIBLE and Screw Microsoft products. They are designed by overworked,
stressed, sleepy and forgetful individuals. So stop following the HYPE. If you
play GAMES, then just get Win98 on 1 partition, and do all your work on LINUX. That
is what I am going to do until these IDIOTS fix Windows XP. Also, in addition to
all this, has anyone heard about their new upcoming policies? we will basically be
RENTING their software, not owning it. Check out NEXT GENERATION Office..just do
a search for it. There's NO way I am going to fall for this industry manipulating
CRAP. Gates, GET YOUR ACT RIGHT RICH BOY..You've screwed enough people!

I agree.. If MS can't build a better OS, and make it more customizeable in an EASY
way, why are we knocking ourselves out ???
Your move to Linux might be a good one, but I'm actually thinking of moving to Mac
OS X. It's a beautiful, CUSTOMIZEABLE Operatation System. - And it's UNIX based now.
Absolutely no reason for me not to try it now...
Yes, I'm taking the leap, but too many of my friends and work associates are saying
that it's a WHOLE lot easier to work on and use the Mac now that it's this new OS...
So here goes. Maybe it's not bye bye to MS at work, but at home, I may be chucking
my "Wintel" box right out the window... - I ain't married to MS, that's for DAMN
sure !

You're entirely right about XP forgetting window settings.
I use List view for all the windows on my system; I can't stand big, goofy icons.
However, not only does XP "forget" many of my window sizes and positions, certain
windows keep reverting to Large Icons view. Ack! You'd think MS could've learned
how to do something so basic by now---or at least provided a tool to fix it when
it went wrong.
I'm not quite ready to make the leap from Window to Macintosh, as you are. They're
nice computers, but a lot more dough than I want to spend. And unfortunately, because
Mac-users comprise only 7% of the PC market, the software available for them is severely
limited. Good luck, though!
Cheers, Andy

Something similar happen to me after installing a program. I found this on Microsoft's
news help site. It worked for me, but I can't guarantee it:
Subject: Re: Window sizes and settings do not stay
From: dev@null.invalid
Newsgroups: microsoft.public.windowsxp.general
Sergio wrote:
I re-sized My Documents to a size that I like. The setting stays for a few days or
less, and then it goes back to being big, maybe 800 x 600. This happens to My Network
Places, Recycle Bin, etc. Plus, if I change the view settings in My Music, which
is inside My Documents, to Details and then I delete some tabs so that it only shows
Size, Duration, and Bitrate, those settings get forgotten in a few days as well.
I am running XP Pro and everything works awesome except this, which is really bothering
me. I am wondering if anyone is experiencing this problem? I tried the Folder Options
settings and have all the folders have the same setting option, but to no avail.
You can try this…..
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\BagMRU]
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\Bags]
Delete those registry keys and restart windows.
Be sure that you understand how to restore Windows, in the unlikely case that the
registry becomes corrupt.

This was the solution (for me)
Saturday, July 20, 2002 at 3:56 am Posted by Jost Wolf

Hello,
I had the just the same problem with Windows XP home always resetting my custom folder
views to its factory defaults. I posted it in a German XP newsgroup and got this
URL:
http://groups.google.de/groups?q=bagmru&hl=de&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&selm=ugTk9Qv2BHA.204840tkmsftngp05&rnum=1
When I checked it again today, I did not work anymore, so here is the text I found
there:
[start quote]
Hello Fred,
I would not be surprised if you had heard me shout from where ever in the
world you are.
Anyway, the "
BagMRU
Size" value worked. My system is now happily creating
Keys under the "Bags" Key with values greater than 400.
You have no idea how happy I am about this. I love XP Pro and the Folder
behaviour was one thing that REALLY annoyed me. I can understand why
Microsoft have set a default, at what probably seems a reasonable limit of
400 Folders. However I think you might find that lots of people may run
into this issue at some point in time. Setting this
BagMRU
Size value is
almost something that TweakUI could do.
In any event it would seem that my issues have been resolved. I can now go
and setup my Music folders just the way I want without the fear that Windows
will clobber those settings at some time in the future.
All that is left to ask is, are there any guidelines on the upper limit to
the
BagMRU
Size? What impact on the Registry Size will increasing the
number of Folders have? Any other side - effects we need to be aware of?
Many, many thanks for your support.
This is a real winner!
Trevor.

That worked for me just perfectly! Even the trashcan remembers its settings now!

Did it work? I never had any problems like Jost described so I would be interested
in the end of the tale.
I was interested in the information about "sniifing".

It seems to depend on how many folders you have on your system alltogether.
And I have to admit, I did not understand what that "sniffing" is all about. Why
does XP do that? What's the use of it?

I suppose it is trying to be "xpert" and anticipate the best view to use. It is possible
to specify the view to use for various file types e.g pictures folders to always
open in thumbnail view.

I sure agree ... I'm going from Win95C to both XP Home and XP Pro, and the damn folders
of both keep resizing faster than I can size and reset them again.
This is actually much worse than Win95 Gold was. Other than this annoyance, I really
like XP.

Thanks SOOOO!!!! much!
Removing those 2 keys (which regenerate, BTW) completely fixed my only XP annoyance
that I have been screwing with trying to fix for 5 months!
Now my XP is 100% perfect!

This has been a nagging problem for me for a long time, deleting these keys worked
great for me. I noticed that after setting views after reboot these keys returned
but with more bags. Working great now, thanks so much, this has been my only real
fault with xp

This is what i did and it worked great for me.
If you've ticked "Remember each folder's view settings" in "My Computer", "Tools",
"Folder Options", "Views"
Then go to here in the registry
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\BagMRU
and
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\Bags
Delete the Keys "BagsMRU" and "Bags".
Restart Windows.
Then go to:-
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell
and add a DWORD called
BagMRU Size
and give it a value of
000003e8
Then go to :-
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam
make a DWORD called
BagMRU Size
and give it a value of
000003e8
Now you can change each folder to the way you want them and the setting will stay
for at least 1000 views.

There is a registry Tweak for the Win.XP forgetting it's settings, if you copy and
paste this
: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoSaveSettings"=dword:00000000 :
without the first & last colon or space into notepad and then rename it to XP Save
Settings.reg or something then merge it with the registry and reboot. I think that
you will find then it will remember the folder settings

HOW to FORCE a custom default?
Saturday, August 9, 2003 at 8:50 pm Posted by aoz

To everyone, relating to
ShellNoRoam, and BAGS, and BagMRU -
My question is HOW to get windows to OPEN EVERY window, NEW OR OLD, to a default
size I prefer? I HATE the default bigger window, but all windows open that way
and I want them to ALWAYS open smaller. WHERE is the DEFAULT setting in windows?
BagMRU and ShellNoRoam assume that I CUSTOM-SET each window. I don't want to do
that.
Thanks for any assistance.

I followed instructions for adding a dword and it seemed everything worked great.
When I open my documents or other files size and view type is preserved, but now
i have a new problem.
When I browse files through another application the file order is totally screwed
up. If in winamp I open a folder of mp3s it shows them in list format by type. Sub
folders are shown at then end and files aren't alphabetized. In order to display
correctly I've to change to details view and click by name.
Again this is only when I'm browsing files via another app, like winamp or photoshop.
Can anyone help? Did I screw up in regedit?
thanks for your help,
nick

Actually, setting this value to 00000000 doesn't acomplish anything. Setting it
to 00000001 however will lock your settings. The only downside is that if you want
to change a window's size or position and have it saved, you'd first have to disable
this registry key. Read more about it here...

I have found a possible solution: Hold down the F5 function key whilst clicking
on the CLOSE (X) box. Sometimes you have to maximize then restore down, and manually
stretch the window to the size you want before the F5 thing, but it does seem to
work for windows media player, and IE.

differance. I even cleared out the entire shell and shell no roam keys and got no
change.
Even my quicklaunch doesn't remember the icon arrangement after reboot. Most non
Windows programs remember thier size and such but windows folders do not (except
IE and OE).
I am just about going to reinstall as it is fairly annoying and I am clueless as
to what to try next. Anyone?

Be careful with the reinstalling of Windows, I tried the exact same thing. It works
for a week or two, but then the BagMRU thing fills up and it happens all over again.

White Ninja, yudaman! None of the other registry changes worked for me, it took
the "NoSaveSettings" to finally fix the Recycle Bin.

I came across AutoSizer before reading this message, and I have to agree...
Great piece of ShareWare.
Solved all my positioning problems.

"...probably seems a reasonable limit of 400 Folders. However I think you might find
that lots of people may run into this issue at some point in time. Setting this BagMRU
Size value is almost something that TweakUI could do. "
TweakUI DOES do this:
(TweakUI>Explorer>Customizations>Folders to Remember: __________).
(I have mine set to 800 & I'm having probs....time to boost it up, I s'poze).

Tried everything here and nothing worked. So on a hunch, I deleted a number of folders
that used thumbnail photo icons. And shazaam!! The #$@% thing works fine now. I think
the photo icons used up too much memory dedicated to folder options. Conclusion:
Use only simple graphic icons for folders.

XP "save" or "Save as" ICONS?

I'm suffering similar problems in windows rememebering folder format - the most annoying
is that some or most applications give me an ICON or THUMBNAIL view of the folder
when I do a save or save-as.
Any thoughts where THIS is coming from? I will research further to see if it is
dependent upon the format of the FOLDER, 99% of which I want "details view", and
a couple (menu-like ones) I want as thumbnails.
Thanks!

I too was frustrated that my folders changed their settings, seemingly without cause.
Then one day I observed that when I changed the setting in one folder, the settings
also changed in another, unrelated, folder. I used regmon.exe to see where the settings
were being stored, and discovered that these two folders were taking their settings
- from the same BAGMRU line in the registry! How did this happen? The two folders
are completely unrelated, not a parent/child, nothing. To fix this, I created a
new folder, copied all the files from one of the paired folders to the new one, and
deleted the old folder. Regmon now shows that the new folder has its own BAGMRU
entry, and I can set the attributes independently. Has anyone observed this; two
folders with the same BAG?
